Whether Thiébaud and Twain’s husband, music producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, had an affair was publicly disputed: Thiébaud denied it, Lange denied dating her, and contemporaneous reports also cited unnamed sources alleging a relationship.
Who was Marie-Anne Thiébaud?
CBS News identified Thiébaud as Twain and Lange’s former house manager and secretary. A contemporaneous PEOPLE report said she had worked for the couple since they moved to Switzerland in 2000 and had become one of Twain’s closest confidants.

That close personal and professional connection is why the story was so devastating for Twain and why coverage described Thiébaud as more than an outside acquaintance.
What happened to Shania Twain and Mutt Lange in 2008?
Twain and Lange announced their separation on May 15, 2008, after 14 years of marriage. Reports at the time said they had a six-year-old son, Eja. Their publicist confirmed the breakup.

Lange characterized the separation as “just a growing apart.” The announcement quickly became linked to reports of an alleged relationship involving Thiébaud.
Did Twain’s best friend have an affair with Mutt Lange?
The available public accounts do not establish the alleged affair as an independently verified fact. They show competing statements and different levels of sourcing.
| Source or speaker | What was said | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Marie-Anne Thiébaud, quoted by CBS News | “If you’re looking for a person that broke up a marriage then you have the wrong person. I’m not that person.” | She denied responsibility and did not answer CBS’s question about whether she had an affair with Lange. |
| Marie-Anne Thiébaud, quoted in PEOPLE | “You cannot believe everything you read in the press.” Asked whether she had an affair with Lange, she answered, “No.” | A direct on-record denial. |
| Robert “Mutt” Lange, quoted in PEOPLE | He denied dating Thiébaud and described the split as “just a growing apart.” | His public account of the breakup. |
| Contemporaneous reports | Reports referred to unnamed sources alleging a relationship. | These allegations were not presented as an adjudicated finding. |
The clearest responsible conclusion is therefore limited: Thiébaud and Lange were publicly linked in allegations surrounding the separation, but both people denied the relationship in the quoted contemporaneous coverage.

What did Marie-Anne Thiébaud say?
Thiébaud’s statements were defensive rather than explanatory. She rejected the idea that she was the person who broke up the marriage and told PEOPLE that readers could not believe everything reported in the press. When asked directly about an affair with Lange, she said, “No.”

How did Twain describe the emotional aftermath?
In later interviews, Twain spoke much more openly about the personal impact. Asked in 2015 what she would say to her former friend, she answered, “I wish I’d never met you.” She added that some people make you think, “I would have been better off not ever knowing that person.” Twain also said she had learned from the experience and did not regret it.

In an account summarized by The Week, Twain said confronting Thiébaud triggered “a total panic attack.” She described the situation as “twisted,” but also “so beautifully twisted,” reflecting the complicated relationships that followed.

After the split, Twain later married Frédéric Thiébaud, Marie-Anne Thiébaud’s ex-husband. That created the unusual situation in which each former spouse married the other former spouse.
Twain’s public comments frame the marriage as part of what she learned and rebuilt after the breakup, not as evidence that the original allegations were legally or independently proven. The unusual pairing is a documented later relationship fact; the motives and private chronology are more limited in the cited accounts.
Rank #4
What happened to Twain’s voice?
The later retrospective accounts connect the crisis to serious health and performance problems. The Week reported that Twain developed dysphonia, a disorder involving spasms of the vocal cords that can make singing difficult or impossible. The report presented this as part of Twain’s account of the aftermath, rather than as a finding that the breakup alone medically caused the condition.
Twain also described co-parenting contact with Lange as workable: “I do see Mutt through our child, and that goes very well. It honestly does.”
Where can readers find Twain’s own perspective?
For Twain’s first-person account, the most directly relevant book is her autobiography, From This Moment On. It offers her perspective rather than resolving every disputed claim made by other people.
