What Happened to GamePro Magazine? The U.S. Shutdown in 2011

GamePro’s U.S. magazine and website operation shut down in 2011, after 22 years. IDG’s closure ended U.S. publication, but a contemporaneous report described a smaller staff group moving to custom-content work and said international operations would continue at that time.

What happened to GamePro magazine?

On November 30, 2011, GamesBeat reported that IDG had shut down GamePro’s U.S. operations. The magazine had been published for 22 years, and its U.S. website had been online for 13 years, according to the report. GamesBeat’s November 30, 2011 report is the contemporaneous account of the closure.

GamesBeat said most staff would be laid off. A smaller group of GamePro Media employees, including then-president Marci Yamaguchi Hughes, would move to GamePro Custom Solutions to produce custom content for vendors and events. The article quoted an unnamed source at the magazine saying, “Basically, the entire [Gamepro US] portfolio is being shuttered.” That is an anonymous source’s characterization, not a named executive’s statement.

Why did GamePro shut down?

The report connects financial pressure on print publishing to a recent change in the magazine’s schedule: GamePro had moved from monthly issues to quarterly ones. It said monthly print issues were too costly to sustain and described the quarterly issue as larger and printed on higher-quality paper.

That account offers context, not a complete or audited explanation of IDG’s decision. GamesBeat also attributed the phrase “creative success not falling in line with business success” to an unnamed source. The report does not provide financial results or a fuller official corporate rationale, so it would be misleading to treat that phrase as management’s formal explanation.

What was supposed to happen to the website and international editions?

GamesBeat reported that the U.S. website would be incorporated into PCWorld’s gaming channel on December 5, 2011. This was the plan announced in the article; it does not by itself establish that the transition happened exactly as scheduled.

The same report said GamePro’s operations in Spain, France, and Germany would continue, and that IDG would retain ownership of the GamePro brand. Those statements describe what was reported in 2011, not the current status of the international publications or brand ownership.

What happened to GamePro’s old issues and articles?

The 2011 report said the fate of GamePro’s legacy content was unclear at the time. A later catalog from the Video Game History Foundation Library documents a substantial print collection: every issue from May 1989 through Winter 2011, all known special issues, and several strategy guides. Its GamePro collection catalog includes an October 2011 issue record identifying a physical magazine and noting that the scan was provided by Retromags.

The catalog confirms preservation of print material; it does not establish that the former website’s complete article archive survives. It also does not establish that every cataloged issue is currently available to buy or that every scan can be freely downloaded.

What should collectors check when looking for back issues?

A search for “GamePro magazine back issues” may help locate copies, but current stock, prices, sellers, shipping terms, and availability are not established by the archival catalog. Before buying, check:
