Ajike “AJ” Owens was fatally shot in Ocala, Florida, on June 2, 2023, after she went to a neighbor’s home to confront her about an earlier dispute involving children playing outside. Susan Lorincz fired a .380-caliber handgun through her closed and locked front door, striking Owens in the upper chest. Owens was 35 years old and left behind four children.

Lorincz claimed self-defense, but a jury convicted her of manslaughter in August 2024. On November 25, 2024, Circuit Judge Robert Hodges sentenced her to 25 years in the Florida Department of Corrections. The case later became the subject of Geeta Gandbhir’s documentary The Perfect Neighbor, which uses police body-camera footage and recordings to examine the dispute, the shooting, and Florida’s Stand Your Ground laws.

Who was Ajike Owens?

Ajike Owens was a mother of four who lived in Ocala, in Marion County, Florida. Relatives and local reporting described her as a devoted parent. Public reporting in 2024 identified her children as Isaac Williams, Israel Owens, Afrika Williams, and Titus Owens. Because the children were minors and were directly affected by the shooting, their private experiences should be treated with care rather than sensationalized.

Owens’s mother, Pamela Dias, and other relatives and community members publicly sought justice after her death. Later accounts reported that the 25-year sentence brought the family some relief, while also emphasizing that a criminal conviction could not end the family’s grieving or healing process.

What led to the shooting?

The shooting followed a long-running conflict between neighbors over children playing in a grassy area near their homes. The precise details of earlier incidents were disputed, and the available accounts include allegations from both sides.

At trial, testimony described Owens’s children telling her that Lorincz had thrown roller skates and an umbrella at them. Lorincz denied those allegations. Owens then went to Lorincz’s residence with one of her children to discuss what had happened. Trial testimony established that Owens was pounding on the door and yelling when Lorincz fired one shot from inside the home.

The key facts are therefore straightforward but the surrounding dispute is not: Owens went to Lorincz’s home during an escalating neighborhood conflict, Lorincz fired through the locked door, and Owens died from the wound. Whether Lorincz reasonably feared an imminent deadly threat was the central question in her self-defense claim.

Why was Susan Lorincz charged with manslaughter instead of second-degree murder?

The Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office said it considered both second-degree murder and manslaughter with a firearm. It ultimately filed one count of manslaughter with a firearm and one count of assault.

The prosecutor’s explanation focused on the elements required for a second-degree-murder charge. Under the office’s analysis, prosecutors would have needed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Lorincz acted with the legally required “depraved mind” toward Owens at the time of the killing. The office described that concept through conduct reflecting hatred, spite, ill will, or evil intent.

In the prosecutor’s assessment, the available evidence did not establish that element strongly enough to support a second-degree-murder charge. The office specifically explained that extreme recklessness or an impulsive overreaction, standing alone, would not prove the required depraved mind. That charging decision was not a ruling that the shooting was justified. It was a judgment about which statutory elements prosecutors believed they could prove beyond a reasonable doubt with the evidence then available.

The State Attorney’s Office also explained why it did not file additional battery, assault, or culpable-negligence charges based on the earlier confrontation. A child’s sworn testimony indicated that the thrown skate did not hit him, and another child said he was not afraid. Prosecutors said those facts did not satisfy the elements of the additional offenses they considered. This explanation concerned potential additional charges and should not be confused with the separate assault count included in the original case.

The trial, conviction, and sentence

Lorincz’s self-defense claim remained central at trial. The evidence included testimony that Owens was pounding on the door and yelling before the shot, while the prosecution argued that the shooting was not legally justified under the circumstances.

The jury convicted Lorincz in August 2024. The researched record confirms the manslaughter conviction and the later 25-year sentence. It does not support describing the outcome as an acquittal, a dismissal, or a successful Stand Your Ground immunity ruling.

On November 25, 2024, Judge Robert Hodges imposed a sentence of 25 years in state prison. The Associated Press reported that the judge characterized the shooting as being motivated more by anger than fear. The judge also considered evidence concerning Lorincz’s childhood abuse and mental-health problems as sentencing factors. Those considerations affected sentencing; they did not erase the jury’s finding of criminal responsibility.

How Florida’s Stand Your Ground law applied

Florida’s self-defense law is broader than a simple rule saying that a person may use deadly force whenever they are inside their own home. The relevant statutes require specific conditions.

Deadly force under Section 776.012

Florida Statute §776.012 permits a person to use deadly force when the person reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent imminent death, great bodily harm, or the imminent commission of a forcible felony. When those conditions are met, a person who is not engaged in criminal activity and is in a place where they have a right to be has no duty to retreat.

That framework makes imminence and necessity critical. Being behind a locked door may be an important fact, but it does not automatically establish that firing a gun was necessary to prevent an imminent deadly threat.

Home protection under Section 776.013

Section 776.013 addresses the use of force in a dwelling or residence. It provides a presumption of reasonable fear in certain situations involving unlawful and forcible entry. The statute also includes exceptions, including circumstances involving lawful residents and people who are not unlawfully and forcibly entering.

The presumption is not a blanket license to shoot through a door during any argument. The facts surrounding the alleged entry, the nature of the threat, and the statutory exceptions all matter. In the Owens case, the fact that Lorincz was inside her residence did not end the legal inquiry.

Immunity under Section 776.032

Section 776.032 provides immunity from criminal prosecution and civil action when force is legally justified under the applicable self-defense statutes. It also makes clear that law enforcement may investigate and may arrest when probable cause exists to believe the force was unlawful.

In practical terms, claiming Stand Your Ground does not guarantee immunity at the scene, prevent an investigation, or determine the verdict by itself. The defense must still fit the statutory requirements. Lorincz was investigated, prosecuted, and convicted, so this case should not be described as one in which Stand Your Ground excused the shooting.

What is The Perfect Neighbor about?

The Perfect Neighbor is a 2025 documentary directed by Geeta Gandbhir. It reconstructs the conflict between Owens and Lorincz primarily through police body-camera footage and other recordings. Netflix describes the film as an examination of how a neighborhood dispute became fatal, with broader themes involving fear, prejudice, policing, gun ownership, and Stand Your Ground laws.

The film premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where Gandbhir received the U.S. Documentary Directing Award. It premiered on Netflix on October 17, 2025. If you want to watch The Perfect Neighbor on Netflix, the platform’s official listing identifies the documentary as available to watch and download through Netflix, although regional availability and plan terms can change.

Netflix warns viewers that the documentary includes racial slurs and footage showing the immediate response to and aftermath of the shooting. The case can be understood without reproducing graphic material, and the children’s trauma should not be treated as entertainment.

What the documentary can—and cannot—establish

Body-camera footage can provide an unusually immediate record of what officers saw and heard after the shooting. It can also show how neighbors, police, and family members responded as the dispute moved from a private conflict into a criminal investigation.

But footage and documentary editing are not substitutes for the complete trial record. Viewers should distinguish between:

  • Established case outcomes: Owens died after being shot through Lorincz’s locked front door; Lorincz was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years.
  • Evidence presented at trial: Testimony about Owens pounding and yelling, the earlier dispute, and the competing accounts of objects allegedly thrown at children.
  • Legal arguments: Lorincz’s self-defense theory and the prosecution’s position that the use of deadly force was not legally justified.
  • Broader context and allegations: Claims involving prior harassment, prejudice, racial slurs, or neighborhood dynamics that may be explored in the film or reported by participants but are not necessarily individual findings by the jury.

The documentary’s larger question is not only who pulled the trigger. It also asks how repeated neighborhood tensions, perceptions of threat, access to firearms, policing, and self-defense laws can interact before a fatal encounter.

Why the case remains significant

The Owens case illustrates several distinctions that are often blurred in coverage of gun and self-defense cases.

First, a prosecutor’s decision to file manslaughter rather than second-degree murder is not the same as declaring a shooting lawful. It reflects the prosecutor’s view of what can be proven under the relevant statute.

Second, a shooting inside a residence is not automatically protected by Florida’s home-defense rules. The person using deadly force must still satisfy the law’s requirements concerning reasonable belief, necessity, and imminent danger, subject to the statute’s specific presumptions and exceptions.

Third, a self-defense claim can remain legally contested through trial. Lorincz was not acquitted under Stand Your Ground; the jury rejected the defense to the extent necessary to convict her of manslaughter.

Finally, the legal outcome does not resolve every human question raised by the case. Owens’s family lost a mother, and four children lost a parent. The criminal sentence established accountability for the offense of conviction, while the documentary revisits the wider circumstances that preceded the shooting and the consequences that followed.
