Barbara Daly Baekeland was stabbed to death in her London apartment on November 17, 1972. Retrospective accounts identify her son, Antony Baekeland, as the attacker. They also describe Barbara’s efforts to arrange heterosexual encounters for Antony and repeat an allegation that mother and son had a sexual relationship. That allegation is disputed, not an established fact.
The surviving public account is built mainly from later journalism and a nonfiction book, rather than a published trial transcript or police file. A careful reconstruction therefore separates the killing and the broad post-case chronology—which are consistently reported—from claims about Barbara’s motives, the alleged incest, and the exact legal reasoning behind Antony’s disposition.
The killing in London
On November 17, 1972, Barbara Daly Baekeland was found fatally stabbed in the family’s London residence. Crime+Investigation UK places the apartment in Cadogan Square; HISTORY.com describes it as a London penthouse. Both retrospective accounts identify her son Antony as the assailant.
Those points form the case’s firmest core: a mother was killed in the family’s London home, and her son was held responsible. The reviewed material does not include a publicly reproduced police file, trial transcript or contemporaneous 1972–73 newspaper report that would allow every forensic or procedural detail to be checked independently. It is therefore safer to describe the event and attribution than to supply a dramatic reconstruction of the scene that the available records do not support.

A wealthy family shaped by Bakelite
The Baekelands belonged to a wealthy American family whose fortune was associated with Bakelite. HISTORY.com identifies Bakelite as an early plastic created by Antony’s great-grandfather, Leo Baekeland. That inheritance placed Barbara and her son inside a world of money, travel and social visibility, circumstances that later made the story unusually attractive to biographers and the popular press.
Wealth explains the family’s public profile, not the homicide. It also does not by itself establish what happened inside the relationship. Accounts of Barbara’s personality, marriage, parenting and social life are retrospective descriptions, often filtered through people who knew the family and through later writers selecting material for a narrative. They should not be treated as a substitute for contemporaneous records.
What does “trying to cure” Antony’s homosexuality mean?
The phrase in the case’s familiar headline reflects a period belief, not a medical fact. Homosexuality is not an illness requiring a cure. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, some families and clinicians still treated same-sex attraction as a problem to be corrected. The language used in later accounts describes that historical prejudice; it should not be adopted as an accurate description of Antony.

Crime+Investigation UK and HISTORY.com report that Barbara arranged or encouraged sexual encounters with women because she hoped Antony would become heterosexual. The accounts portray this as part of a volatile mother-and-son relationship and as evidence of Barbara’s attempt to control or redirect his sexuality. They do not provide a clinical record demonstrating that such encounters changed anything, nor do they establish that Barbara’s actions followed a recognized treatment plan.
“Arranged encounters” can cover very different conduct, from introducing a son to potential partners to actively organizing sex. The published summaries do not give enough primary documentation to determine the exact sequence, consent, or frequency of these episodes. A responsible account should therefore describe them as reported efforts, identify the sources, and avoid presenting them as a verified therapeutic intervention.
Was the relationship incestuous?
The incest story is the most sensational and least secure part of the narrative. Later accounts repeat claims that Barbara initiated a sexual relationship with Antony as an extreme attempt to change his sexuality. Crime+Investigation UK explicitly says whether this happened is debatable and reports that some of Barbara’s friends believed she enjoyed making shocking statements. A 1985 Los Angeles Times review of Savage Grace likewise treats the incest account as an allegation and criticizes the way it is repeatedly presented.

Nothing in the reviewed material supplies primary evidence—such as a contemporaneous confession, a verified diary entry, a court finding or an independently authenticated witness account—that settles the allegation. The claim may be part of the family’s remembered history, but repetition is not proof. It is also possible for a person to make a shocking claim without it describing an actual sexual relationship; the friends’ explanation is one reason the allegation remains contested.
For that reason, “Barbara used incest to cure her son” should be understood as a disputed interpretation of the case, not as an established motive or fact. The homicide does not validate the allegation, and the allegation cannot be used to explain the homicide without evidence that the available summaries do not provide.

Antony after the killing
HISTORY.com and Crime+Investigation UK give a broadly similar post-case sequence. Antony was sent to Broadmoor, the high-security psychiatric hospital in England, and was released in 1980. Retrospective accounts then say he moved to New York and attacked his grandmother. They report that he died in custody in 1981.

The sources do not align sufficiently on the legal details to justify a precise explanation of the verdict, sentence or hospital order. “Held at Broadmoor” describes the reported institution; it does not, by itself, explain whether a court found him guilty, not guilty by reason of insanity, or subject to another form of order. Nor does the available material establish an exact date or complete account of his death. Those details require primary court, prison or medical records.
The later attack on his grandmother is important because it shows that the public story did not end with Barbara’s death. It is still a retrospective report, however, and should not be embellished with motives or diagnoses that the cited summaries do not document.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the story became so persistent
The case combines elements that invite sensational retelling: a prominent fortune, an affluent family apartment, a parent and adult child in conflict, sexual-orientation prejudice, an alleged taboo relationship and a violent death. Each element can be true as a reported circumstance without every interpretation being true. Popular narratives often collapse that distinction, turning an allegation into a motive and a motive into certainty.

The incest claim also became attached to the title of Natalie Robins and Steven M. L. Aronson’s book, Savage Grace: The True Story of Fatal Relations in a Rich and Famous American Family. Simon & Schuster says the book draws on interviews, private letters, diaries, and hospital, State Department and prison records. That source base makes the book a significant secondary account, but it remains a work of interpretation rather than a publicly available court record. The Los Angeles Times review’s warning about repeating the allegation is part of the story’s publication history and a reminder to distinguish documentation from narrative emphasis.
What is known about the warning before the murder?
A publisher preview for Savage Grace attributes a warning to psychiatrist Dr. W. Lindsay Jacobs, who the book says saw Antony on October 30, 1972. The preview presents the warning as a recollection in the book, not as an independently checked clinical record. Because the complete consultation notes are not part of the material reviewed here, the warning should not be treated as a verified prediction or as proof that the killing was inevitable.
That distinction matters in hindsight. Knowing that Barbara was killed weeks later can make a reported warning appear more precise than it may have been in context. Without the full clinical record, readers cannot assess what information Jacobs had, what he meant, or how Barbara understood the conversation.
How to read the case without repeating its myths
- Start with the date and event. The reported killing occurred in London on November 17, 1972, and Antony is identified as the attacker by the principal retrospective summaries.
- Separate reported conduct from interpretation. Barbara’s attempts to arrange heterosexual encounters are reported; calling them a “cure” adopts a discredited view of homosexuality and overstates what the sources establish.
- Label the incest claim every time it matters. Use terms such as allegation, claim or disputed account, and identify the uncertainty rather than writing as though the relationship is proven.
- Do not infer legal conclusions. Broad statements about Broadmoor, release in 1980 and later custody are supported; a precise verdict or insanity finding is not supplied by the reviewed material.
- Check the source type. A retrospective article, a publisher’s description and a book review provide different kinds of evidence. None replaces a court file or contemporaneous reporting.
Further reading
Savage Grace by Natalie Robins and Steven M. L. Aronson is the topic-specific nonfiction account identified in the available sources. Simon & Schuster describes its use of interviews, letters, diaries and institutional records. Crime+Investigation UK’s overview is useful for its explicit qualification of the incest allegation, while HISTORY.com provides a concise account of the Bakelite connection and the reported post-case chronology. The Los Angeles Times review, published December 8, 1985, is valuable for showing how the allegation was characterized—and challenged—when the book appeared.
Readers seeking certainty about the legal outcome, the evidence at trial or the alleged sexual relationship should look for primary court, police, medical and contemporary newspaper records. Those records were not available in the material reviewed for this account, so conclusions beyond the documented core should remain provisional.
