Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston met while making The Bodyguard (1992). Costner, the film’s star and producer, supported Houston’s casting and recalled encouraging her during filming. He later described her as a friend and spoke at her funeral in 2012. The accounts of their relationship document a professional partnership and friendship, not a confirmed romance.
How Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston met
Their connection began with The Bodyguard, in which Costner played a former Secret Service agent hired to protect Houston’s character, singer Rachel Marron. Costner was also a producer and said he chose Houston after seeing her perform. In his 2012 funeral eulogy, he recalled that people raised concerns about her lack of feature-film acting experience and that the studio might prefer a white performer. His response, he said, was that she was right for the role. He also recalled delaying the film so Houston could finish a tour. ABC News reported his remarks at the service.
Costner later recalled that Houston sometimes felt uncertain on set. He said he told her she could come to him when she needed reassurance and promised to look after her during filming. In a 2024 interview, he described himself as her “imaginary bodyguard.” CBS News reported that recollection.
How their film partnership extended to the soundtrack
Costner also had a role in the film’s musical choices. A Library of Congress National Recording Registry essay, added in 2019 and credited to Gerrick Kennedy, says Costner suggested Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” after the song first planned for the film became unavailable. He also advocated for Houston’s recording to begin a cappella. The song became one of the defining elements of the soundtrack.

Were Costner and Houston friends?
Costner said they remained friends until Houston’s death. ABC News also reported his comments about their shared interests and values, including growing up in Baptist churches. These are Costner’s descriptions of the relationship; the published accounts cited here do not establish how often the two were in contact over the years.
Why Costner spoke at Houston’s funeral
Houston died in 2012. Her cousin Dionne Warwick asked Costner to speak at the funeral, held on February 18. Costner later told ABC’s Diane Sawyer that he initially wondered why he had been asked, but agreed after hearing how exhausted and grief-stricken Warwick sounded.

At the service, Costner spoke about Houston’s talent, the doubts she had shared during filming, and his belief that she had been the right choice for Rachel Marron. He also encouraged her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and young singers. ABC described the eulogy as nearly 20 minutes; CBS’s 2024 account called it 17 minutes, so the outlets differ on its duration. Costner’s message to Houston included: “Whitney, if you could hear me now, I would tell you, you weren’t just good enough, you were great.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was there a romantic relationship?
The reporting cited here supports a work partnership that Costner described as a friendship, along with his protective and encouraging role on the film. It does not substantiate a romantic relationship. The on-screen romance in The Bodyguard is part of the story, not evidence that the actors had an affair.
