Its premise—Avengers in mechanized suits battling Hulk variants inspired by Godzilla—captures the animated series’ freedom to remix the MCU, while also raising the question at the heart of CBR writer Joshua M. Patton’s critique: does spectacle this far removed from familiar Marvel storytelling make a satisfying story?
What happens in the Season 3 premiere?
The episode puts the Avengers in mech suits to fight Hulk variants described as Godzilla-inspired. Disney’s promotional clip frames the setup as the “Mighty Avenger Protocol”; that is the clip’s promotional wording, not a verified line of dialogue from the episode.
That is the premise established by the official episode listing and promotional material. A fuller plot synopsis, episode runtime, and detailed credits are not established by those sources, so the premise alone should not be mistaken for a complete account of the story.
Why this premise fits What If…?
Disney describes What If…? as a series that reimagines familiar characters through unexpected choices, creating alternate versions of the MCU. A Hulk-and-mechs confrontation pushes that approach toward an especially broad genre mash-up: recognizable Avengers face giant-monster-inspired threats using machinery more associated with giant-robot stories than ordinary superhero battles.

Season 3’s announced ensemble also spans very different corners of Marvel, including Sam Wilson as Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Bruce Banner, Red Guardian, Captain Peggy Carter, Agatha Harkness, Shang-Chi, and Storm. The premiere’s outsize setup is one expression of that season-wide willingness to rearrange familiar characters and ideas.
What does “the best and worst” claim mean?
“The Best and Worst of the MCU In a Nutshell” is the headline of Joshua M. Patton’s CBR article, published December 22, 2024; it is not the episode’s official name. Patton treats the leap into Gundam-style mech suits and Godzilla-inspired Hulk variants as both a demonstration of the format’s imaginative reach and a possible weakness: the spectacle may take the story far from what makes the familiar MCU work.
That is an individual critic’s framing, not evidence of a consensus. The available sources establish no audience score, review aggregate, viewership figure, or broad agreement among critics. Whether the episode’s scale feels inventive or distracting is best judged by asking whether the genre mash-up serves a clear character story, whether the animation makes the scale legible, and whether the episode has enough room to develop its premise.

When did Season 3 premiere?
Disney’s Season 3 press kit says the season began on Disney+ on December 22, 2024, with a new episode released daily for eight nights. The premiere’s release date was therefore part of a daily rollout, not evidence that the episode or season is newly released today. Disney+ availability and pricing can vary by region and time.
