Greta Gerwig acknowledged the factual point behind Jo Koy’s Golden Globes joke about Barbie’s body, then explained why the doll’s open-ended identity made her a rich subject for a film. Her response was more measured than a simple rebuttal: “Well, he’s not wrong.”

What Jo Koy said about Barbie and Oppenheimer

During his opening monologue at the 81st Golden Globe Awards on January 7, 2024, host Jo Koy contrasted the films’ sources. Variety quoted him saying: “’Oppenheimer’ is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and ‘Barbie’ is about a plastic doll with big boobies.” The 721-page figure described the book in Koy’s joke; it was not a statistic about Barbie or the film. Variety reported the line.

Contemporaneous coverage described the joke’s reception as muted. The Associated Press’s live coverage said the Barbie gags drew few laughs, while reports also noted criticism from viewers. Those reactions describe how some people responded; they do not establish Koy’s intent. The Associated Press covered the ceremony live.

How Greta Gerwig responded

In a BBC Radio 4 Today interview, reported on January 10, 2024, Gerwig began her response with: “Well, he’s not wrong.” She was acknowledging the point about Barbie’s physical design: the doll was the first mass-produced doll with breasts. The San Francisco Chronicle reported her response, as did Variety.

Gerwig’s answer did not stop at the doll’s body. She described Barbie as a figure without a fixed character or story: “Barbie by her very construction has no character, no story, she’s there to be projected upon.” That openness, she explained, was part of the creative challenge and opportunity in making the film. She also invoked Barbie creator Ruth Handler’s insight that children could imagine themselves as grown women rather than only as mothers. Entertainment Tonight’s January 10 report covered the interview.

What her answer does—and does not—say

Gerwig accepted a literal observation about the doll’s design while shifting the discussion to what that design and lack of a fixed story let audiences imagine. Calling her response the “high road” is an interpretation of its tone, not a quotation or a claim that she explicitly condemned or endorsed Koy’s joke.

Variety’s January 2024 article also reported that Barbie had reached $1.4 billion worldwide at that time. That is the contemporaneous figure in the report, not a newly verified lifetime total. See Variety’s coverage.
