Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 added Sophia Bush as trauma surgeon Cass Beckman and Michael Thomas Grant as chaplain James, while bringing familiar characters including Ben Warren, Sydney Heron and Jackson Avery back into the story. It also changed the regular status of Jake Borelli and Midori Francis, though pre-season reports expected both to appear briefly as Levi Schmitt and Mika Yasuda. This is a retrospective guide to Season 21; ABC’s current site has moved on to Season 22.
Who is new in Grey’s Anatomy Season 21?
Season 21 introduced two notable recurring characters: Cass Beckman, played by Sophia Bush, and James, played by Michael Thomas Grant. They occupy different roles in the story: Cass works at another Seattle hospital, while James joins Grey Sloan.
Sophia Bush as Dr. Cass Beckman
ABC News reported that Bush joined in a recurring role as a trauma surgeon at Seattle Presbyterian. Cass’s husband, David, is a cardiothoracic surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial, giving her a personal connection to the hospital without making her a Grey Sloan staff member. ABC described Cass as “amiable, fun and a little messy around the edges.” The announcement said Bush would debut in the episode airing November 7, 2024. ABC News’ casting report
Michael Thomas Grant as James
Grant recurs as Grey Sloan’s new chaplain. TVLine, attributing the character details to ABC, describes James as an “openly gay Episcopal chaplain” with a special connection to younger patients who is open to love. TVLine’s casting report

Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh
Before the season aired, TVLine reported Ellen Pompeo was planned for at least seven of Season 21’s 18 episodes, with a possibility of appearing in as many as 14. Scott Speedman was also expected to have an increased presence as Nick Marsh. TV Insider likewise anticipated seeing more of Meredith and Nick. These were pre-season plans, not a verified final count of their appearances. TVLine’s pre-season cast report and TV Insider’s preview
Who left regular status, and who was expected to appear briefly?
Jake Borelli and Midori Francis were no longer series regulars in Season 21, as Levi Schmitt and Mika Yasuda. That status change did not mean their characters were absent for the whole season: pre-season reporting expected both actors to appear briefly to complete their characters’ stories. The available reports describe the expectation ahead of broadcast, rather than establishing a final episode count. TVLine, TVLine’s cast-change report and TV Insider
