The gesture was quickly compared online to a Nazi salute, but observers disagreed about its meaning and the footage does not establish Musk’s intent.
What happened at Capital One Arena
Musk appeared on stage during a celebration of Donald Trump’s inauguration at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Reuters reported that he pumped his arms and shouted, “Yesssss,” then called the election “a fork in the road of human civilization.” He thanked the crowd, placed his right hand over his heart, and extended his arm upward and outward. He turned and made the gesture again toward the audience behind him, then said, “My heart goes out to you. It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured.” Reuters’ account of the event describes this sequence.
The arm extension, with the palm facing down, resembled a gesture associated with Nazi salutes, which explains the immediate comparison. But resemblance alone does not show why Musk moved his arm. The words he spoke, his turn toward the crowd, and the gesture’s appearance are all relevant context—not proof of intent.
Why observers disagreed about the gesture
Commentators assessed the same visible action differently. The Anti-Defamation League said it seemed Musk had made “an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute,” while adding that it understood why people were on edge. Historian Roger Griffin described the action as “a grey area between a deliberately glorifying gesture and a spontaneous gesture.” Historian Richard Evans, as reported by Euronews, argued against interpreting it as a Nazi gesture, citing Musk’s gaze following his hand. Other commentators, including historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat, called it a Nazi salute. Euronews’ report on the historians’ assessments sets out the disagreement.

These are interpretations, not a finding about what Musk intended. The available reporting establishes the visible sequence and records competing views; it does not settle his state of mind. Nor do the cited sources establish a medical or psychological explanation for his arm-pumping, shout, or gestures. “Acting strangely” is a subjective description, not a verified account of what caused his behavior.
What Musk and the viral quote claims said
Reuters reported that Musk dismissed the criticism as a “tired” attack and wrote on X: “Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.” That response records his criticism of the reaction; it does not explain the gesture’s intent.

A separate screenshot later circulated with a longer statement falsely attributed to Musk, including the claim that MAGA would “succeed in all the ways Nazi Germany failed to.” PolitiFact searched Musk’s account and found no such post, found no credible news report of those remarks, and rated the claim false. Its fact-check also noted that Musk had not stated his intention for the gesture in the posts it examined. PolitiFact’s fact-check of the fabricated quote explains how it assessed the screenshot.

The Atlantic noted that a video Musk posted cut away to the crowd during the first gesture, while a C-SPAN clip showed it in full. That distinction matters when checking claims about the action’s sequence: a shortened clip may omit context. The Atlantic’s article points readers to the fuller footage, but its observation does not itself determine intent. The Atlantic’s discussion of the available clips provides that lead.
