Subscribing to a YouTube channel is a free way to follow it. Its recent uploads become available in your Subscriptions feed, and YouTube can send notifications based on your settings. Subscribe does not mean paying, and it does not guarantee an alert for every new video.
What happens when you subscribe?
YouTube adds the channel to your subscriptions, making it easier to find and giving you a dedicated place to check recent uploads. The channel’s new videos can appear in your Subscriptions feed or tab. You may also see videos from subscribed channels on Home, but Home mixes them with recommendations; it is not a complete list of uploads. YouTube’s help page explains subscriptions and the feed.
Subscribing also sets a notification preference for that channel, normally Personalized. That preference is separate from the subscription itself.

No. Subscribing to an ordinary YouTube channel is free and does not start a recurring payment. You may need to sign in to subscribe. The word “subscription” here means following a channel, not paying for a service.

A paid channel membership is a separate feature, generally offered through a Join button. Where available, membership may include paid perks such as members-only content or badges. YouTube Premium is also separate; you do not need Premium to subscribe to channels. See YouTube’s channel-membership details.
Subscribe versus the notification bell
| Control | What it means |

| Subscribe | Follow the channel and make its recent uploads available in your Subscriptions feed. |
| All | Choose the strongest channel-level notification option for more alerts about the channel’s activity. |
| Personalized | Let YouTube choose which channel notifications it considers relevant. This is normally the default. |
| None | Stay subscribed but turn off notifications for that channel. |
The bell is not a second subscription: it controls alerts for a channel you already follow. Even with All selected, delivery is not an unconditional guarantee of a device alert for every upload. YouTube notes that some notifications may appear in the app rather than as device alerts, and device settings can block them. Details are in YouTube’s notification settings guidance.

How to subscribe
The labels and layout can vary somewhat by device, app version, account, and region, but the basic steps are similar.

On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Open a video from the channel or go to the channel page.
- Click Subscribe. The control changes to Subscribed.
- To change alerts, use the bell beside the subscription and choose an available setting.
In the YouTube mobile app
- Open the app and sign in.
- Open one of the channel’s videos or its channel page.
- Tap Subscribe.
- To manage alerts, tap the bell beside Subscribed and choose All, Personalized, or None, where available.

Where to find videos from channels you follow
Open Subscriptions in YouTube’s navigation on a computer, or tap the Subscriptions tab in the mobile app. It is the place to check recent uploads from followed channels. Home can also show subscription videos, but it includes recommendations too, so do not rely on it as a complete upload list.
Why might you not get notifications?
Being subscribed and receiving a push alert are different things. If you expected a notification, check these possibilities:

- The setting is Personalized or None. Personalized does not mean every upload will trigger an alert. Open the bell menu and confirm the channel setting.
- Phone permissions block YouTube. Check that notifications are allowed both in YouTube’s settings and in your Android or iOS system settings.
- You are using a different account. Confirm that the app or browser is signed into the account that subscribed.
- You have not watched or engaged with the channel recently. YouTube may deliver some notifications in the app rather than as device alerts.
- The channel is made for kids. Notifications may be unavailable, and its bell may be fixed to no notifications.
- There has not been a recent upload. A subscription does not create notifications when a channel has no new activity.
- You are checking Home instead of Subscriptions. Open the Subscriptions feed to look for recent uploads directly.

If you need to notice a particular upload promptly, subscribe, choose All if that option is available, allow YouTube notifications on your device, and check the Subscriptions feed rather than depending only on Home or push alerts.

How to unsubscribe
- Open the channel or one of its videos.
- Click or tap Subscribed.
- Select Unsubscribe and confirm if prompted.
If you subscribe again later, YouTube says the channel’s notification setting may reset to Personalized or no notifications. Check the bell again if you want All alerts.
Privacy and unwanted subscriptions
Subscribing mainly changes your YouTube experience. Do not assume every subscription is publicly visible or that every one is private; review YouTube’s privacy settings if visibility matters. The membership visibility rules apply to paid memberships and should not be confused with ordinary free subscriptions.
If unfamiliar channels appear in your subscription list, unsubscribe from them and review your browser extensions—YouTube notes that extensions can subscribe users without permission. If you suspect broader account access, review connected third-party apps and secure your account.

Your subscription tells YouTube that you want to follow the channel and puts its recent uploads in your subscription area. It is not a payment or donation, and subscribing alone does not guarantee a creator more views, monetization, or placement in recommendations.
