The E means Explicit. Apple Music uses it to identify a track, album, or other release that has been classified as containing mature or uncensored content. That can include strong language, sexual references, violence, substance use, or other themes—not just swear words.
What the E label means
The visible E is Apple Music’s interface shorthand for the explicit content classification in its catalog metadata. It is a content advisory, not a label for an extended edition, remaster, Dolby Atmos or lossless audio, music video, or lyrics availability. Apple’s guidance says classification can depend on context, frequency, emphasis, and the expectations of the recording’s audience, so there is no universal list of words that automatically produces an E.
The badge also is not a conventional age rating such as “18+.” It signals that the particular release may contain material a listener or parent considers unsuitable, but it does not guarantee that every mature theme has been identified or that the recording is inappropriate for every child.

Apple’s catalog metadata distinguishes among explicit, clean, and none classifications (Apple Music API). The visible badge is applied to the release or track represented by that metadata.

Does E always mean swear words?
No. An explicit classification may reflect:
- profanity or slurs;
- sexual language, references, or descriptions;
- violence or graphic subject matter;
- drug or alcohol references;
- explicit spoken dialogue, samples, or skits;
- other mature themes.
Apple’s support guidance describes these decisions as contextual rather than as a simple profanity filter (Apple’s content-restriction guide). Apple Music does not publish a reason for every individual song, and the classification may reflect metadata supplied and managed by the label, distributor, or other rights holder.
Explicit, clean, and unlabeled: the difference

| No badge | The item is not classified as explicit in that catalog entry. It is not necessarily a “clean edit” of another song. |
Apple’s delivery rules say a track should be marked Clean when it is an edited version of an available explicit track (Apple Music Style Guide). A clean version can still contain violence, sexual themes, drug references, suggestive artwork, or other mature material that was not edited out. “Clean” means edited, not universally child-appropriate.

Why two versions of the same album appear
Labels and artists can deliver separate explicit and clean releases. They may have different artwork, track identifiers, durations, track lists, or availability in a particular country. Apple Music also supports alternate versions and equivalencies, so a playlist or restricted account can sometimes receive a clean equivalent when one exists (Apple’s alternate-version documentation).

How to find the uncensored recording
- Open the artist’s page or the album page rather than relying only on a library shortcut.
- Look for the track or album carrying the E badge.
- Compare artwork, duration, track list, and labels such as “Clean” or “Explicit.”
- If a playlist plays muted words, inspect its entry; it may contain the clean equivalent.
- Remember that availability varies by country or storefront, so both versions may not exist everywhere.
If you selected an E-marked catalog track but still hear a radio edit, check restrictions and try the version listed on the artist’s catalog page. Downloaded, purchased, uploaded, or matched files can have different metadata from Apple Music catalog items.
Why an E-marked song is gray or will not play
When explicit content is blocked, Apple says explicit tracks already in an iPhone library can appear dimmed and will not play. A song can also be grayed out when a device is set to allow only clean music (Apple’s iPhone guide; Apple’s troubleshooting page). The fix depends on where you are listening.

Allow or block explicit music
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games.
- Open the music or allowed-media setting and choose the option that allows Explicit music, or choose the clean-only option to restrict it.
For a child managed through Family Sharing, select the child’s name in Screen Time first. A Screen Time passcode may be required. Labels differ slightly by iOS/iPadOS version, language, and region; older systems used names such as “Store, Web, Siri & Game Center Content.”
Mac
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Screen Time and the relevant family member, if applicable.
- Open Content & Privacy, then Store Restrictions.
- Turn Explicit Music, Podcasts and News on or off.

Apple Music for Windows
- Open the Apple Music app.
- Select the Sidebar Actions button and choose Settings.
- Select Restrictions and expand Content Restrictions.
- To block explicit tracks, turn off Allow Explicit Music. Use the lock control to prevent changes.

Apple Music on the web
- Go to music.apple.com and open the account menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Under Parental Controls, turn on content restrictions, create a four-digit passcode, and select the permitted music rating.
Web controls are separate from some device-level Screen Time settings, so check the platform where playback is actually occurring (Apple’s web parental-control guide).
Common misunderstandings
- E does not mean “extended.” It means Explicit.
- No E does not automatically mean clean. It may simply be an unclassified-as-explicit song.
- Apple Music does not automatically censor every E-marked recording. Restrictions or selection of a clean equivalent explain muted playback in many cases.
- An album E is not a track-by-track guarantee. Check individual songs.
- Clean is not a complete safety rating. It describes an edit and may leave mature themes intact.
- The badge can vary by release, storefront, platform, and catalog update.
Apple’s Sensitive Content Warning is a separate feature for certain photos and videos; it is not the music-content setting (Apple’s Sensitive Content Warning explanation).
