The easiest route is a DivX-compatible TV, Blu-ray/DVD player, or media player with USB playback. If your television does not support the file, connect a computer by HDMI, or keep the files on a computer/NAS and play them through Plex or DLNA. A USB port alone does not make a TV a universal DivX player: the container, video and audio codecs, profile, resolution, subtitles, filesystem and sometimes DRM all matter.
Identify what is actually inside the file
“DivX movie” can mean a file ending in .divx, an AVI or MKV containing DivX video, an older DivX 3/4/5/6 encode, DivX Plus HD, DivX HEVC, or DivX VOD content with authorization restrictions. The filename extension is not enough. AVI and MKV are containers; DivX, Xvid, H.264/AVC and HEVC are video codecs.
Use MediaInfo on your computer and note:
- Container (AVI, MKV, MP4 or another format)
- Video codec/profile, resolution, frame rate and bitrate
- Audio codec and channel layout (MP3, AAC, AC-3, DTS, etc.)
- Subtitle format (embedded, SRT, SSA/ASS, PGS)
- Whether the file is DRM-protected
DivX’s certified-device directory covers particular profiles, including Home Theater, HD, Plus HD and HEVC; certification is not a promise that every DivX file will play. Check the exact model at DivX’s device directory.
Choose the least complicated playback method
| Your situation | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The TV manual explicitly lists DivX/AVI/MKV support | USB drive | No computer or network is required |
| Old TV or uncertain codec support | Computer plus HDMI | Desktop software decodes far more formats |
| Many movies, several TVs or a NAS | Plex | Central library, metadata and transcoding |
| Free local-network setup | DLNA/server share | Simple browsing once configured |
| Unusual audio/video or repeated failures | VLC over HDMI or server transcoding | Avoids relying on the TV’s decoder |
| No computer should remain on | USB or a dedicated media player | Server-based methods need an available source |
Method 1: play the movie from a USB drive
Use this only after checking the television’s model-specific manual. Verify supported codecs, maximum resolution/frame rate, subtitle formats and USB filesystems; FAT32 and exFAT are common, but model support varies.
#1 Best Overall

- Format or prepare the drive using a filesystem the TV supports.
- Copy one movie with a short, simple filename.
- Safely eject the drive and insert it into the TV’s media-capable USB port.
- Open the TV’s Media, USB, Video or Source menu (the label varies).
- Play the test file and check picture, sound, subtitles and seeking before copying the rest.
A TV may display the filename but still reject it because of an audio track, bitrate, frame rate, profile or subtitle format. A DivX-certified Blu-ray/DVD player can be a better decoder for an older television, but the player itself must specifically list DivX support; not every Blu-ray player does.
Method 2: connect a computer to the TV with HDMI
HDMI is the most universal fallback and normally avoids conversion.
- Connect the computer’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Select that HDMI input on the television.
- Open the file in VLC or another desktop player.
- Use duplicate or extended display and move the player window to the TV.
- Set the computer’s audio output to HDMI if sound remains on the computer.
This handles old AVI files, unusual audio tracks, MKV files and subtitles that a TV may reject. VLC supports a very broad range of formats. Its Apple TV app also supports remote playback and SMB, FTP, SFTP, NFS and UPnP/DLNA, but an app does not turn every television into a direct USB DivX player: see VLC’s Apple TV listing.

Method 3: use Plex for a permanent library
Plex is usually the most convenient solution when files live on a desktop, NAS or home server. Plex lists DIVX among supported library formats, while actual playback depends on the client and TV platform (what Plex is; supported media formats).
- Install Plex Media Server on the computer or compatible NAS containing the files.
- Create a Movies library and select the folder holding the films.
- Let Plex scan and identify the titles.
- Install Plex on the TV or an external streaming device and sign in to the same account.
- Start the movie and inspect playback information if it buffers or fails.
Direct Play, Direct Stream and transcoding
- Direct Play: the client plays the original file.
- Direct Stream: Plex repackages streams without fully converting the video.
- Transcoding: the server converts media into a format the client can decode.
A Plex app can therefore “support” a file while the server is converting it in real time. Smart-TV capabilities vary by manufacturer, and Plex identifies MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio as a common direct-play baseline.
Method 4: DLNA or ordinary network sharing
A computer, NAS or media-server application can share the folder over your home network; the TV or streaming box then browses it. Roku’s guide lists Plex, Serviio, Windows Media Player, Twonky, MiniDLNA/ReadyMedia, PlayOn and Synology systems among tested DLNA options: Roku’s USB and network-media guide.

DLNA can be free and may transcode unsupported files, but it is less polished than Plex for metadata, watch history, users and subtitles. Roku also notes that unsupported USB files may need conversion even when a network server can transcode them.
When conversion is the sensible answer
For broad compatibility, make a copy in an MP4 container with H.264/AVC video and AAC audio. MP4 is a container, not a codec. Use an external UTF-8 SRT subtitle or burn subtitles into the copy if the TV cannot render the original format.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Convert when USB fails, the TV accepts only MP4/H.264/AAC, Plex repeatedly transcodes or the audio is unusual. Do not convert a file that already plays through HDMI or Plex merely because it is DivX: re-encoding is lossy and can take substantial time. DivX’s software advertises MP4 conversion and DLNA casting, while warning that device compatibility still varies (DivX downloads; DivX 11).

Troubleshoot the common failures
The TV cannot see the drive
- Confirm the filesystem, partition size and that the port supports media playback.
- Try a small FAT32 drive with one short, simply named file.
- Check power, filename characters and folder depth.
The file is visible but says “unsupported”
- Compare it with a known-good file.
- Use MediaInfo to identify the failing stream.
- Try converting only the audio, then the complete file to MP4/H.264/AAC.
- Use VLC over HDMI or Plex server-side transcoding.
Picture works but there is no sound
The audio is often AC-3, DTS, multichannel or an unusual bitrate that the TV cannot decode. Convert or remux the audio to AAC or another format listed by the model’s manual.
Sound works but video does not
The video profile, resolution, frame rate or bitrate may exceed the decoder. Convert the video to H.264 or use a more capable external player.
Plex or DLNA buffers
- Check whether Plex is transcoding and watch server CPU usage.
- Prefer Ethernet where possible and check Wi-Fi signal.
- Test with subtitles off; some subtitle formats trigger video transcoding.
- Check that the file bitrate is realistic for the network and client.
Subtitles do not appear
- Put an external UTF-8
.srtbeside the movie with the same base filename. - Enable subtitles in the player and use simple filenames.
- Burn them into a converted copy if the TV cannot render the original format.
DivX VOD will not play
DivX VOD is not an ordinary unprotected download. It may require registration or authorization on a compatible DivX-certified device. Generic players and conversion tools cannot be assumed to play it or bypass its protection. DivX explains the certified-device requirement at its VOD support page.

Buying guidance: buy for the files, not the logo
If HDMI from a computer already works, buying a streaming box is unnecessary. For several TVs, Plex plus a suitable client is more useful than a generic “4K” label. Roku Ultra offers HDMI, USB, Ethernet and Plex/Roku apps, but Roku warns that local-file support varies; see Roku Ultra and its media guide. Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Google TV Streamer are HDMI platforms, not guaranteed native DivX USB players (Roku Streaming Stick 4K; Google TV Streamer). NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro adds two USB 3.0 ports and Plex Media Server capability, but is excessive for one old AVI (NVIDIA SHIELD). Prices and promotions change, so verify current listings.
The Bottom Line
Verify the TV’s exact codec limits before trying USB. Use HDMI for the highest no-conversion success rate, Plex for a multi-device library, and MP4/H.264/AAC conversion only when the original cannot play. Treat DivX VOD and other DRM-protected files separately.
