A familiar call at the end of hide-and-seek is “Olly olly oxen free!” It tells anyone still hiding that they can come out, often because the seeker is ending the round. The wording is customary, not a rule every group must follow.
What does “Olly olly oxen free” mean in the game?
It is a call for players who are still hiding to come out. Depending on the group’s rules, it may mean the seeker has stopped searching, the round is over, or players can return for the next round.
There is no single required ending phrase. Families and regions may use different wording, so players can agree on a signal before the game starts.
Is “Ready or not, here I come!” the ending line?
No. It is commonly said after the seeker finishes counting to announce that the search is beginning. “Olly olly oxen free” serves a different purpose: calling remaining hiders out when the seeker ends the round.

What can you say if nobody knows the phrase?
Use a clear, agreed signal such as “Everyone out, round over!” That is a practical alternative, not a traditional line; the important thing is that everyone knows the round has ended.
Where did “Olly olly oxen free” come from?
Its origin is uncertain. The Phrase Finder describes the origin as difficult to determine confidently, and the general reference entry on “Olly olly oxen free” also reports uncertainty. Proposed explanations should not be treated as settled fact.
