She also described a spouse as a close companion: “Your partner is the best friend you’ll ever have, that you’ll spend the most time with. So you have to talk to them, share stuff.” These are Lauper’s reflections on her own relationship, not a guarantee or formula for every couple.
Who is Cyndi Lauper married to, and when did they marry?
Lauper is married to actor David Thornton. She told Vanity Fair in June 2023 that they married on November 24, 1991. In the same interview, she said balancing her career, marriage and parenting was hard, and described Thornton as “the strong arm of the family.” She recalled that he encouraged her to travel for work while he cared for their son.

How did Lauper and Thornton meet?
They met while working on the 1991 film Off and Running. In its October 2024 report, PEOPLE said they began as friends before falling for each other. An archival Independent interview with the couple, published July 4, 1992, offers an early account: Lauper recalled spending time together after meeting on the film and deciding to marry after a month together at Cape Cod. Thornton described their friendship growing over dinners.
Thornton also explained their choice of a Quaker wedding ceremony in that 1992 interview: “Neither of us is a Quaker, but we liked the idea of friendship and tolerance being the theme, as our friends come from all walks of life and all kinds of political and sexual persuasions.”

Why does the headline say “33-year marriage”?
That wording reflects the October 18, 2024 PEOPLE interview, which described the couple as approaching their 34th anniversary that November. Their wedding date, November 24, 1991, means their 35th anniversary is still upcoming in November 2026; “33 years” is not a current count.
