In a November 2024 PEOPLE interview, hairstylist Chris Appleton said he came out as gay at 26 while raising two young children with his then-partner, Katie Katon. He described that period as difficult and said Katon was “incredibly supportive”; he also said the two remained close.
What did Chris Appleton say about Katie Katon?
Appleton told PEOPLE that he and Katon had been together for about nine years when he came out. He said the decision felt especially difficult because they were raising two children. PEOPLE’s article, updated November 13, 2024, listed the children as 21 and 20 at that time; those are ages reported in 2024, not current ages.
He spoke warmly about Katon’s response, saying, “She was incredibly supportive.” The interview also describes them as remaining close after their relationship ended. Appleton’s account is the basis for describing her support; the article does not provide an independent account from Katon.
Why did Appleton describe coming out as difficult?
Appleton said that coming out later in life brought a sense of difficulty because he had children and had been with a partner for years. In PEOPLE’s account, he reflected on the challenge of navigating that change while parenting, rather than presenting it as a simple or sudden turning point.

He also spoke about guilt and shame, saying, “Once I let go of the guilt and the shame of it all, my whole life changed.” He connected living openly with a broader sense of personal freedom: “There’s so much power in living authentically and being authentically yourself.”
What did Appleton share about his childhood and hairdressing?
In the same interview, Appleton recalled being bullied at school because classmates made assumptions about his sexuality based on his interest in doing hair. He also said he was dyslexic and that hairstyling gave him an early area of confidence: “Hair was the first time I felt good at something.” These are personal recollections he shared with PEOPLE, not details independently examined in the article.

What does the interview establish about their relationship?
The PEOPLE feature calls Katon Appleton’s ex-partner and discusses their parenting and continued closeness. It does not establish further details about Katon’s private life, and it does not identify her as his ex-wife.
