In a December 1, 2024 excerpt from her autobiography, singer and actor Ila Arun described “Choli Ke Peechhey” as sensuous rather than obscene. That is Arun’s interpretation and recollection of the controversy—not an independently established ruling on the song’s meaning or on the reported complaints.
What did Ila Arun say about the song?
Arun revisited the debate in an excerpt from Parde Ke Peechhey, her autobiography written with Anjula Bedi. She recalls being blamed for the song’s suggestive effect and stresses that she was one part of a larger creative process. “I was only the singer!” she wrote. Why did “Choli Ke Peechhey” cause controversy?
Arun says the song was recorded and released before Subhash Ghai’s film Khal Nayak reached theaters, and had already drawn attention by the time the film opened. She recalls public criticism and accusations of obscenity, along with calls to ban the song. The excerpt also recounts family disapproval, complaints in court, and a police visit concerning a summons.
These events are reported here as Arun’s memoir recollections. The excerpt does not give case names or court records, so it does not establish the details or outcome of any legal complaint.

How did Arun interpret the lyric?
The question in the title—“Choli ke peechhey hai kya?”—is answered, in Arun’s account, by lyricist Anand Bakshi with “Choli mein dil hai mera” (“My heart is in the choli”). She understood the response as turning a lewd question toward a statement about the heart, and placed the lyric in the broader tradition of suggestive and romantic expression in Indian folk songs and art.
Arun also argued that her delivery influenced how listeners heard the song: “I said that it was only my sensuous voice and my style of singing which drew the attention of listeners to what was behind the choli!” That is her explanation of the song’s reception, not a settled account of how all listeners interpreted it.

Who was involved in the song?
Arun names Anand Bakshi as lyricist, Madhuri Dixit and Neena Gupta as the dancers, and Tips as the music company. Subhash Ghai directed Khal Nayak. Arun’s point is that the controversy attached to a song shaped by several creative roles, even though she says she was singled out as its singer.
