The showrunners read the moment as a trap closing: Sauron’s wish to master the Rings will bind him to them. The creators offer that reading of Sauron’s ambition, but they do not settle what emotion lies behind the tear Sauron shows, and the sections below keep those two things apart.
The line itself
Sauron tortures Celebrimbor in the forge to learn where the Nine Rings are. Celebrimbor’s answer, as J.D. Payne quotes it in Vanity Fair’s finale breakdown from October 3, 2024, is: “No, you are their prisoner, Sauron—Lord of the Rings.”
The line works because it reuses a phrase the audience has already heard. The reversal of that phrase carries the meaning, so the next section explains where it came from.
How the title is reversed
In his guise as Annatar, Sauron tells Celebrimbor that Celebrimbor himself will be “the Lord of the Rings.” It is a title of glory, a promise that Celebrimbor will eclipse his ancestor Fëanor. In the finale Celebrimbor gives the same words back to Sauron, now as an accusation.

Showrunner Patrick McKay describes the change in meaning: “The first time it’s an honorary title being bestowed, the second time, it’s sort of a death sentence in a way.” The phrase has not changed; the speaker’s relationship to the Rings has.
Why Celebrimbor dies the way he does
Director Charlotte Brändström, speaking to TheWrap on the same day, says Celebrimbor provokes Sauron because he knows there is no escape. By dying he keeps his secret: that he gave the Nine Rings to Galadriel. Sauron kills him in the forge.

The scene does not give Sauron a plot defeat. He survives, obtains the Nine, and continues his campaign. What Celebrimbor wins is a moral and prophetic point. He names the cost of Sauron’s ambition: the maker who wants to rule his creations will be bound to them. McKay links that warning to the later destruction of the One Ring and to Sauron’s ruin.
What the tear does and does not establish
Payne points directly to Charlie Vickers’s tear as Sauron’s response to Celebrimbor’s words. In the same account, Sauron returns to manipulation as the Orcs enter the forge. McKay’s broader reading is that Sauron is “a slave of his own ambition,” and that Celebrimbor understands Sauron’s will will be tied to the Rings.

That reading suggests Celebrimbor’s words touch a truth Sauron cannot simply dismiss. The interviews do not establish whether the tear is grief, recognition, rage, or some mixture. Treat any more precise emotion as interpretation rather than the creators’ stated intent.
The useful distinction is between three layers:

How the show adapts Tolkien’s death
The showrunners contrast the series’ private death scene with Tolkien’s account of Celebrimbor being shot with arrows and displayed as a trophy after Eregion falls. McKay says the production wanted to keep the thematic core of that account while keeping the death personal to the relationship between Celebrimbor and Sauron.

McKay also cautions that Tolkien’s own accounts can differ. The series’ intimate staging is therefore the showrunners’ adaptation choice, not a word-for-word reproduction of one uncontested text, and it should not be judged as an error against the books.

- Unfinished Tales. Charles Edwards consulted this collection for Tolkien’s description of Celebrimbor’s pride and ambition, according to an About Amazon UK article from 2024. It is useful character background, but the scene makes sense without it.
- Availability. That 2024 article reported the series on Prime Video, with episode-availability details from the Season 2 release period. Streaming rights and territories change, so confirm current availability in your region before relying on it.
The scene’s meaning rests on the dialogue and the reversal of a single title. Read the finale’s forge exchange with that reversal in mind, and the tear becomes a question for the viewer rather than an answer the creators have handed over.
