The opposing claims center on:
- Rhaenyra Targaryen, Viserys’s named heir and daughter; and
- Aegon II Targaryen, Viserys’s son, whose supporters place him on the throne.
The resulting struggle divides the Targaryen family and its supporters into rival factions. This civil war is called the Dance of the Dragons, a name that refers both to the conflict and to the dragons involved in it.
Is Fire & Blood a novel?
Not in the same way as the main A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Fire & Blood is presented as a historical chronicle of House Targaryen. It traces the dynasty’s rulers and major events rather than following one continuous cast of viewpoint characters in a conventional narrative.

Is the show based on the main A Song of Ice and Fire books?
No. House of the Dragon is not primarily based on the five main A Song of Ice and Fire novels that inspired Game of Thrones. Its named source is Martin’s Targaryen history, Fire & Blood.
The series is set roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, during an earlier period in the history of Westeros. That makes it a prequel in setting and subject, while its source book provides a history of the Targaryen dynasty rather than a conventional prequel novel.
Is The Rise of the Dragon the book behind House of the Dragon?

In Fire & Blood, historical information is filtered through reported testimony and conflicting accounts. In the series, those uncertainties become opportunities for interpretation. Events can be shown from the characters’ perspectives, while relationships and motives can be expanded into scenes that are not presented as conventional dialogue in the book.
This means that a reader should not expect every detail to match exactly. Differences in timing, characterization, emphasis, and presentation are part of adapting a fictional history into a television drama.
