Create a YouTube channel banner at 2,560 × 1,440 pixels (16:9). Keep every important word, logo, face, and call to action inside the centered safe area—approximately 1,546 × 423 pixels on that working canvas—and keep the finished file at 6 MB or less. YouTube uses one source image but crops or displays it differently on phones, computers, and TVs.

YouTube banner size at a glance

Specification Current guidance
Recommended canvas 2,560 × 1,440 pixels
Aspect ratio 16:9
Minimum upload canvas 2,048 × 1,152 pixels
Official safe area at minimum canvas 1,235 × 338 pixels
Equivalent safe area on a 2,560 × 1,440 canvas Approximately 1,546 × 423 pixels
Maximum file size 6 MB

YouTube’s branding guidance recommends 2,560 × 1,440 pixels, particularly for large displays and TVs. Its channel-customization help lists 2,048 × 1,152 as the minimum and 6 MB as the maximum file size.

What is the YouTube banner safe area?

The safe area is the central region where essential content is least likely to be lost when YouTube adapts the banner to different screens. YouTube states the safe area as 1,235 × 338 pixels on the minimum 2,048 × 1,152 canvas.

If you design at the recommended 2,560 × 1,440 size, the same proportions become approximately 1,546 × 423 pixels. These are not two competing upload sizes, and 1,546 × 423 is not a complete banner canvas. It is a scaled guide for the center of a 2,560 × 1,440 file. The conversion is proportional: 2,560 ÷ 2,048 is 1.25, so 1,235 × 1.25 is about 1,544–1,546 pixels; 338 × 1.25 is about 423 pixels. Adobe’s banner guidance uses the approximately 1,546 × 423 version.

What belongs inside the guide?

  • Channel name or recognizable logo
  • A short description or promise
  • A face or primary subject
  • An upload schedule, if it genuinely helps viewers
  • A brief call to action and important brand marks

Use the outer part of the 2,560 × 1,440 image for flexible background color, texture, scenery, or decorative artwork. Do not put information that viewers must read at the far left or right.

Why the banner looks different on phones, computers, and TVs

YouTube uses the same uploaded image across computer, mobile, and TV displays, but the visible composition changes with the device and interface. The platform does not provide one universal, permanently fixed pixel crop for every current view. In practice:

  • Center: Keep text, logos, faces, and the main visual message here.
  • Edges: Treat them as expendable background space that can be cropped.
  • Interface zones: Leave visual breathing room where the profile image or native channel links may compete with your artwork. These are layout precautions, not additional official pixel specifications.

YouTube also advises against embellishments such as heavy borders, frames, or shadows that may look awkward after cropping. Preview the finished banner at both a narrow mobile width and a large display before publishing.

How to make a YouTube banner that survives cropping

  1. Create a 2,560 × 1,440 document. Keep it at 16:9.
  2. Add a centered guide about 1,546 × 423 pixels. Put all essential content inside it.
  3. Extend the background to every edge. This prevents blank strips when the image is adapted to another screen.
  4. Use short, high-contrast text. A sentence that works on a desktop may be unreadable on a phone.
  5. Export below 6 MB. PNG is useful for logos, flat colors, and sharp type; JPEG is often easier for photographic artwork to keep under the limit. These are practical production choices, not separate YouTube dimension rules.
  6. Check the upload preview. If an important element is clipped, move it inward rather than trying to predict a new device-specific crop.

Recommended versus minimum canvas

The minimum 2,048 × 1,152 file is valid for upload, but it is an upload threshold rather than the ideal master. Use 2,560 × 1,440 when the banner contains detailed photography, may appear on a television, or will be edited and reused later. Use the minimum only when your source artwork is limited or the design is very simple. Starting larger gives you more resolution and a more reusable file without changing the 16:9 composition.

How to upload or change your banner

Desktop

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Choose Customization in the left menu.
  3. Open the Profile tab.
  4. Under the banner image, select Change and choose your file.
  5. Use the preview and crop controls, then select Done.
  6. Select Publish.

This path follows YouTube’s current official instructions; labels can change as Studio is updated.

Phone or tablet

In the YouTube or YouTube Studio app, open your profile or channel, choose Edit or Edit profile, tap the banner image, select or take a picture, and save. Menu names can vary by operating system, app version, language, and interface rollout. See YouTube’s Android instructions and iPhone/iPad instructions for the current route.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Using 1,546 × 423 as the whole file: That is the safe area, not the upload canvas. Place it inside a 2,560 × 1,440 image.
  • Designing only for desktop: Test a narrow mobile view and move essential content toward the center.
  • Putting copy at the edges: Replace edge text with background artwork or reposition it inside the guide.
  • Uploading over 6 MB: Re-export with sensible JPEG compression, reduce unnecessary detail, or optimize the PNG.
  • Making the text too small: Shorten the message and increase type size and contrast.
  • Adding rigid frames or borders: Remove them if cropping makes the edges look uneven.
  • Confusing the banner with other graphics: A profile picture, video thumbnail, and video watermark each have separate specifications.

Templates and design tools

You can build the file manually in any image editor, or use a template service. Canva’s YouTube banner maker provides pre-sized templates and a drag-and-drop workflow. Adobe Express offers another template-based option, and its design guide explains the scaled safe area. Both are useful for fast, recurring updates; an editor you already own may be preferable if you need advanced typography, vector control, or offline files. Canva may suggest a conservative 4 MB export target, but YouTube’s stated platform limit is 6 MB.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2,560 × 1,440 the same as 1,546 × 423?

No. 2,560 × 1,440 is the full recommended upload canvas. Approximately 1,546 × 423 is the centered safe-area guide for that canvas.

Can I upload a 2,048 × 1,152 banner?

Yes. YouTube identifies 2,048 × 1,152 as the minimum canvas, but 2,560 × 1,440 is the better master for large screens and future edits.

What is the maximum YouTube banner file size?

The official limit is 6 MB or less. A smaller export may be easier to upload, but 4 MB is not YouTube’s general maximum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my banner look different on mobile?

YouTube adapts the same source image to different displays and crops some views. Keep essential content in the centered safe area and use the edges for flexible background artwork.

Should I use PNG or JPEG?

Use PNG when crisp logos, flat colors, or transparency matter; use JPEG when photographic artwork needs efficient compression. Keep either export at or below 6 MB.
