Why do some sources say “Big Four”?
The Congressional Research Service (CRS) uses “Big Four” for ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC when discussing the networks in the context of FCC rules and regulatory treatment. The CW’s description as the fifth broadcast network uses a broader grouping. The terms refer to different contexts, not competing lists of the same scope. CRS
How a network reaches viewers
A broadcast network assembles, produces, or licenses programming and distributes it through local broadcast stations. The network brand and the local station carrying its programs are not the same thing. Stations are licensed by the FCC; CRS says the FCC does not directly regulate broadcast networks, though it regulates stations and has authority over certain network-affiliation agreements. CRS

Over-the-air antenna
A TV antenna can receive local broadcast signals without a pay-TV subscription, where reception is available. Results depend on the address, distance from transmitters, terrain, building materials, and signal conditions. Check local station coverage before choosing an antenna; no antenna can be assumed to receive all five networks at every location.
Cable, satellite, or live-TV streaming
These services may carry local broadcast affiliates, but availability varies by market and provider. Check the current channel lineup for your specific location rather than relying on a national channel list.
