There is no single set of vampire fears that applies to every story. In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Van Helsing describes garlic and sacred objects as things that constrain Dracula, and says he can cross running water only at slack or flood tide. Sunlight, by contrast, is not a dependable universal weakness: vampire stories disagree about whether it destroys them, weakens them, or leaves them unharmed.
What Van Helsing says vampires fear in Dracula
The clearest answer comes from the rules Van Helsing gives in Bram Stoker’s novel. They describe Dracula’s fictional world; they are not a universal rulebook for every vampire story or proof of what historical communities believed.
- Garlic: Van Helsing says it afflicts a vampire and limits his power.
- Sacred objects: He says Dracula keeps his distance from sacred things, including Van Helsing’s crucifix. The novel depicts this as constraint and reverence, rather than simply saying that every religious object destroys a vampire.
- Running water: Van Helsing says Dracula can cross it only at slack or flood tide. This is a specific restriction in the novel, not a rule to apply to all vampires.
Van Helsing’s explanation includes the line: “Then there are things which so afflict him that he has no power, as the garlic that we know of; and as for things sacred, as this symbol, my crucifix, that was amongst us even now when we resolve, to them he is nothing, but in their presence he take his place far off and silent with respect.” He is a character speaking within the novel, and the archaic wording is from the Project Gutenberg text of Dracula.

Is sunlight a vampire weakness?
Not in every story. The Royal Ontario Museum notes that some portrayals make sunlight fatal to vampires, while others show vampires resisting it. That distinction matters: a character might be destroyed by exposure, merely weakened, or unaffected, depending on the work.
The museum also notes that some newer stories move away from familiar rules involving crosses, silver, and garlic. A vampire’s vulnerability therefore has to be checked against the particular book, film, or other portrayal rather than assumed from the character type alone. Folklore, Stoker’s novel, and later portrayals are different things
It is easy to blend together regional folklore, the rules in Stoker’s novel, and the inventions of later writers and filmmakers. They are not interchangeable. The details about garlic, sacred objects, and running water above are supported as claims made by characters in Dracula; they should not be presented as beliefs shared by all historical communities.
For any vampire in a specific story, ask what the rule does and whom it applies to: does a substance repel the vampire, restrict movement, diminish power, or destroy the character? And is that rule stated for this vampire, or borrowed from a different version? Those distinctions explain why a list of supposed vampire weaknesses can change from one story to another.
