CBZ means Comic Book ZIP; CBR means Comic Book RAR. Each is usually an archive of comic-page images, named so a comic reader can recognize and display it as a book. The pages are still ordinary image files: the archive packages them together, while reading features such as page turning, manga direction, and bookmarks come from the app.
For most new comics, CBZ is the safer choice because ZIP support is more widespread. CBR remains useful for existing collections, but its RAR support can vary between devices and apps.

These extensions are conventions built around archive types, not a single independent comic-document specification. The UK National Archives describes comic-book archive files as compressed folders of image files and maps the extensions to their underlying containers. What is inside a CBR or CBZ?
A typical archive might look like this when opened:

ComicInfo.xmlThe pages are image files. JPEG and PNG are common; some readers also support WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, or other image types. The archive can also contain folders and an optional metadata file such as ComicInfo.xml. That file may describe the series, issue, writer, artist, publisher, year, summary, or page count, but it is not guaranteed to be present or recognized by every app. Panels Store’s publishing guidance describes archives of properly named images and optional ComicInfo.xml metadata.
CBR and CBZ do not inherently provide DRM. A seller may apply restrictions through a store, watermark files, or set contractual terms, but the archive extension itself is not a DRM system.
Why use an archive instead of a folder of images?
- One file is easier to manage. It is simpler to download, copy, back up, attach, and organize than dozens or hundreds of separate pages.
- It can preserve a useful sequence. Readers generally sort pages by their filenames, so clear numbering helps establish reading order.
- Comic apps recognize it. A reader can show thumbnails, page-turn navigation, spreads, zoom, bookmarks, progress, or right-to-left manga reading. Those are application features, not guaranteed features of the archive.
- It is easy to inspect or recover. A CBZ can often be opened as a ZIP archive, and its images extracted. A CBR needs RAR-capable software.
The main benefit is packaging and predictable handling, not necessarily dramatic compression. Comic pages are often already compressed as JPEG or PNG, so putting them in ZIP or RAR may add little further size reduction. Results depend on the images and compression settings.
How to open a CBZ file
- Install a comic reader that supports CBZ, then open the file from the app’s import or file-picker command.
- If your device does not associate
.cbzwith the reader, use Open with or import the file manually. - If necessary, make a copy and change the copy’s extension from
.cbzto.zip, then open it with a ZIP utility. This is useful for extracting pages, though it will not provide a comic reader’s features.

How to open a CBR file
A CBR is a RAR archive. Use a comic reader or archive utility that explicitly supports the RAR version in the file. Some built-in file managers handle ZIP but not RAR; support for newer RAR variants such as RAR5 is not universal. YACReader, for example, lists RAR5 support on its downloads page.
Do not just rename .cbr to .cbz. That changes the filename, not the archive format. A reader expecting ZIP may still reject the RAR contents. The same is true in reverse: changing a ZIP file’s extension to .cbr does not turn it into RAR.
Extract pages from an archive
For a CBZ that your archive tool does not recognize, work on a duplicate:

unzip comic.zip -d comic-pagesunzip is available on many macOS and Linux systems. On Windows, use File Explorer or an installed ZIP utility. For CBR, use a comic reader or RAR-capable archive utility; do not assume every tool supports every RAR variant.

Extract into a new folder, then check that the images are present and in the right order. Keep the original archive until you have confirmed the extracted pages open correctly.
How to create a CBZ file
- Put the comic’s page images in a dedicated folder.
- Rename the pages in reading order with numbers padded to the same width, for example
001.jpg,002.jpg, and003.jpg. - Put the cover first if that matches the behavior expected by your target reader. Cover-detection rules are app-specific.
- Optionally add metadata such as
ComicInfo.xmlif your intended reader supports it. - Create a normal ZIP archive. For broad compatibility, put the images near the archive root rather than nesting the whole page folder inside it.
- Rename the resulting
.zipfile to.cbz, then test it in a comic reader.
From a terminal, if the images are in a folder named comic-pages, you can build a CBZ without adding an unnecessary outer folder:
cd comic-pages
zip -r ../comic.cbz .Renaming an already valid ZIP from .zip to .cbz is only a label change—but that is enough when the archive already contains the intended images and structure. Panels Store recommends CBZ for most publishers because it is widely supported. Panels Store file requirements
How to convert CBR to CBZ
Conversion means changing the underlying container, not just the extension:

- Listen audiobooks or music albums
- Watch movies, documentaries, or TV shows
- Access premium steaming services with BingePass
- Open or extract the CBR with RAR-capable software.
- Check that all pages and any metadata were extracted. Correct the filenames if their sequence is ambiguous.
- Create a ZIP archive containing the pages, preferably at the archive root.
- Rename the new ZIP file to
.cbzand test it in a comic reader. - Keep the original CBR until you have verified the new file.
A rebuilt file may be larger or smaller depending on compression settings. Metadata can be lost if it is not copied, and a rebuild can omit files if it is interrupted. Converting is useful when a device supports ZIP but not RAR; if the current CBR opens reliably on all your devices, there may be no need to repackage it.
Why pages appear in the wrong order
Readers usually determine display order from filenames, not from the order in which files were added to the archive. With ordinary alphabetical sorting, 10.jpg can appear before 2.jpg. Pad numbers to the same width:

011.jpgOther common causes include:
- A cover named
cover.jpgthat sorts separately from numbered pages. - Unnumbered front matter or advertisements.
- Inconsistent capitalization, punctuation, or prefixes.
- Nested folders that sort differently than expected.
- Different natural-sorting behavior between the software used to create the archive and the reader.
- Manga reading direction set incorrectly in the app.
- A two-page spread scanned as one image or split inconsistently.
The files can be correct inside the archive while a particular reader displays them in another order. Rename them consistently, rebuild the archive if needed, and test it in the intended reader.

For an image-based comic collection, CBZ is usually the most practical starting point. PDF is often the better handoff when printing or general document compatibility matters. EPUB may suit structured or digital-first books. None is automatically superior for every reader or publication.

Common problems and fixes
“The file is corrupted” or will not open
The download may be incomplete, the archive may be damaged, the extension may not match the contents, the archive may be password-protected, or the reader may not support its RAR version or image types. Re-download it, try a second compatible reader, and—if it is a CBZ—try extracting a copy as ZIP. If the images extract, test them individually and rebuild the archive as CBZ.
“The reader shows blank pages”
Possible causes include an unsupported or damaged image, unusually large image dimensions, memory limits, nested folders, or incomplete extraction. If unusual image formats are the issue, converting copies to JPEG or PNG may help; keep the originals until you have checked the rebuilt file.
“The cover is missing from the library”
Some apps expect the cover to be the first image; others look for a particular filename, metadata, or a separate thumbnail. Try putting the cover first, refreshing the library, or consulting the app’s own guidance. There is no universal cover filename convention.

“My phone opens ZIP but not CBZ”
Import the CBZ into a comic-reader app, use the file manager’s Open with command, or rename a copy to .zip to extract its pages. Check whether the reader accepts local files or only libraries accessed through a cloud service.
Are these files safe and legal?
The extension does not guarantee that an archive is safe. A comic archive can contain unexpected files, malformed content, or material that could exploit an outdated application. Get files from legitimate sources, scan untrusted downloads, use current reader software, and do not open unexpected executables or installers inside an archive. Renaming a file does not verify it.
Likewise, an archive format does not tell you whether a comic is authorized to download or redistribute. Copyright and licensing depend on the source and permissions, not whether the file ends in .cbr or .cbz.
