Annette Bening has described learning from her son Stephen Ira since he came out, while stressing that he has the right to tell his own story. Her public comments trace a family learning curve—from her 2018 reflection on how her children broadened her understanding to later remarks in which she acknowledged not always knowing how to respond.
What Annette Bening has said about Stephen
In a 2023 interview reported by The Advocate, Bening praised Stephen and spoke candidly about her own adjustment: “He’s someone I do admire, and I’ve learned a lot from when he first came out. … I didn’t always know what to do, and I didn’t always make the right choices because of my own ignorance, but we got through it.”
She also set a clear boundary around how much she wanted to say: “This is the most I’ve ever talked about it because I’m a private person and my son is private. He has a right to talk about his own life.” That boundary matters: Bening’s remarks describe her experience as a parent, not a license to speculate about Stephen’s private life.
How Bening described learning from her children
In a May 10, 2018 interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, Bening reflected on the changing relationship between parent and child. “For so long, you feel like you’re teaching your children about the world, and now, for sure, I feel the opposite way — that they’re teaching me about the world.”

She connected that thought directly to Stephen: “That’s true of all of my kids, certainly true of my oldest son, Stephen, that there’s been a whole new kind of universe opened up to me and to all of us in the family because of Stephen because who he is.” Bening had been discussing how inhabiting characters can expand an actor’s empathy; her comments about her children followed that reflection, rather than serving as a general statement about transgender identity.
Who is Stephen Ira?
Stephen Ira is Bening’s son, and he has publicly spoken about himself. In 2012, ABC News reported on a video he released in which he said, “My name is Stephen,” and “I identify as a trans man.” The report described him at the time as a writer and artist and noted that he spoke about support from friends and peers as well as ambitions to write poetry, fiction and criticism. Those details reflect what he shared then, not necessarily a current biography. ABC News covered the video, and The Advocate reported on his responses to questions about peer support and role models.

What Bening’s comments do—and do not—reveal
The public record establishes Bening’s admiration for Stephen, her account of learning from him, and her acknowledgment that she sometimes struggled to respond well. It also establishes that Stephen has spoken publicly in his own voice. Neither point supports assumptions about private medical details or other aspects of his life he has not chosen to discuss in these interviews.
In a 2023 interview with San Diego Mesa College, Bening likewise expressed concern for Stephen’s privacy and the importance of letting him speak about his own life. The college interview complements the boundary she articulated in The Advocate’s account: a parent can describe what she has learned without claiming ownership of an adult child’s story.
