Werewolves has an instantly legible hook: a supermoon returns a year after moonlight triggered a worldwide werewolf outbreak. Frank Grillo gives the film a sturdy action lead, and its short runtime keeps things moving, but the premise promises more tension and spectacle than the story’s uneven creature presentation and familiar plotting deliver. It is best approached as disposable genre pulp, not as a horror film that makes the most of its central idea.
What is Werewolves about?
In Steven C. Miller’s 2024 action-horror film, a supermoon event a year earlier transformed anyone exposed to moonlight into a bloodthirsty werewolf for one night. The outbreak killed close to a billion people in the film’s fictional backstory, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis—not in real life. As the next supermoon approaches, former Marine Wesley Marshall (Frank Grillo), a former leader of the Global Rapid Response Team, works with scientists Dr. Aranda (Lou Diamond Phillips) and Dr. Amy Chen (Katrina Law) to find a cure and protect his family. Universal Pictures’ official synopsis and title page establish the premise and cast.
The setup makes the moon itself a countdown clock: exposure means transformation, and the danger is expected to last through the night. That gives the film a clean, easy-to-grasp engine for action and family-in-peril stakes. The central question is whether the people trapped in that crisis—and the film’s monsters—can sustain the idea once the initial hook has been stated.
Does the premise pay off?
A brisk action lead, but familiar story beats
Grillo is a natural fit for a no-nonsense survival story. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman called the film “not a good movie” but “a tight little time passer,” adding that Grillo improves the pulp material. That captures one of its genuine strengths: the film understands the value of a capable action lead and does not take long to get moving. At 94 minutes on Universal’s U.S. listing, it is a compact watch rather than an extended mythology-building exercise.

- EXPANDABLE & HIGHLY REPLAYABLE – No two sessions are the same, and expansions such as Daybreak, Vampire, or Alien introduce new characters and twists to build a deeper social deduction experience
But the scale of the premise invites more than a sequence of familiar survival-movie beats. A recurring, worldwide moon-triggered catastrophe could make the characters’ choices feel urgent and the threat feel larger than the immediate group under siege. Instead, the high concept does more work in the setup than in the story’s development. The family stakes and search for a cure give Wesley a clear purpose, but the film does not consistently turn those ingredients into suspense or a distinctive emotional payoff.
The werewolves are more compelling as an idea than as a sight
There is straightforward creature-feature pleasure in watching the transformation threat arrive. Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro praised the film as delivering “a whole lot of snarling, drooling werewolves,” and that response points to the direct, unpretentious appeal it can offer genre fans. Leslie Felperin’s Guardian review, however, praises the stages of transformation while criticizing the finished creature looks as unconvincing. The contrast gets at the gap between the promise of a moonlit outbreak and how effectively the monsters land once they are fully revealed.

- HIGH ENERGY SOCIAL DEDUCTION: Split into hidden teams of Villagers and Werewolves and argue, accuse and vote in a conversation driven party game that rewards sharp observation, table talk and reading your friends.
- MODERATOR LED DAY AND NIGHT PHASES: A neutral Moderator narrates the story, manages the “day” debates and “night” actions, and keeps the game flowing so players can stay focused on bluffing, strategy and social interaction.
- ICONIC ROLES WITH SPECIAL POWERS: Includes classic roles like Seer alongside other characters that gain secret information or influence the vote, creating tense choices for both Villagers and Werewolves each time the group plays.
- FLEXIBLE FOR MANY GROUP SIZES: Scales smoothly from classrooms and clubs to parties and game nights, supporting a wide range of player counts while each new mix of people creates fresh dynamics and surprising outcomes.
- ACCESSIBLE YET DEEP GAMEPLAY: Simple rules teach quickly, but hidden roles, shifting alliances and table meta make Ultimate Werewolf a favorite for fans of deduction, mystery and bluff based games who enjoy returning again and again.
That unevenness matters because the werewolves are not incidental decoration; they are the premise made physical. When the creature presentation fails to sell the threat, the film has less to fall back on than a more character-driven or formally inventive horror story might. The result is spectacle that can be enjoyable in bursts without making the central threat feel as potent as it sounds.

The critic responses explain why the movie may work for one viewer and fall flat for another. Some appreciate the blunt genre spectacle and Grillo’s presence; others find the plotting generic or the finished creatures unpersuasive. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus calls it an “unapologetically schlocky horror flick” that does not become the “howling good time it could’ve been.” That is a fair shorthand for its mixed appeal: it knows what kind of movie it is, but the execution does not consistently turn that identity into a satisfying payoff.
Is Werewolves worth watching?
It may be worth a rental if you want a lean, unpretentious creature feature, enjoy Grillo in action roles, or are happy to trade polish for a straightforward survival setup. The concept is strong enough to make the film an easy pick for a casual genre night, and the 94-minute U.S. listing suggests a relatively brief commitment. If you want inventive world-building, consistently convincing creature effects, or a story that fully exploits its global-catastrophe premise, temper expectations.
