Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained the clear domestic box-office leader over the August 7–9, 2026 weekend, taking in $144.25 million in its second weekend. The Odyssey added $31.71 million in its fourth weekend, giving the two event films approximately $175.97 million of the $202.31 million reported by The Numbers—about 87% of the entire United States-and-Canada weekend market.
The result was a strong weekend for theatrical exhibition, but an uneven one: the headline numbers came overwhelmingly from two established blockbusters, while the weekend’s principal new wide releases opened in the single-digit millions.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivers an extraordinary second weekend
Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed $144,254,386 from 4,487 theaters, averaging $32,149 per location, according to The Numbers. After 10 days, the Sony-Marvel release had reached $654,342,914 domestically.
The weekend represented a drop of approximately 60% from its opening frame. That is a substantial decline in percentage terms, but the absolute result remains exceptional: contemporary trade coverage described it as the third-largest reported sophomore weekend in domestic box-office history, narrowly behind the second-weekend benchmarks associated with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame. That historical placement should be treated cautiously until a final, independently verified record table is available. The Numbers’ chart figure is the more precise number for this weekend.

Associated Press reporting, based on studio estimates, put the film at approximately $655.1 million in the United States and Canada after 10 days and $1.67 billion worldwide. AP also reported that no film had accumulated a higher domestic total as quickly. That is a source-attributed milestone, not a claim that the $144.3 million weekend itself is an all-time domestic record.
The distinction matters. The $144.25 million figure is the film’s three-day domestic weekend gross; the $1.67 billion figure includes international markets and covers the film’s worldwide run to that point. They are not interchangeable measures.
For fans responding to the film’s unusually large theatrical launch, Spider-Man: Brand New Day merchandise is the most natural commercial extension of this weekend’s story. Amazon has announced a branded promotional ecosystem around the film, including products and other fan-facing integrations. Any specific listing should still be checked for current availability and licensing before publication; the campaign announcement does not guarantee that every Spider-Man product is official, in stock, or associated with the film.
The Odyssey continues a major theatrical run
The Odyssey placed second with $31,712,155 from 3,603 theaters, or $8,802 per theater. The Numbers reported a $461,385,045 domestic cumulative gross after 24 days.

Its premium-format performance is an important part of the story. AP reported that The Odyssey had generated $147.3 million domestically from IMAX engagements. That is an IMAX gross, not a portion that should be added to the domestic total again, but it demonstrates the continuing value of large-format presentation for event movies. Audiences are not simply choosing whether to see a film; for some releases, they are also choosing a more expensive and technically distinctive way to see it.
A market powered by two films
The weekend’s concentration is unusually clear:
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day: $144.25 million
- The Odyssey: $31.71 million
- Combined top-two gross: approximately $175.97 million
- Total reported weekend gross: $202.31 million
- Top-two share: approximately 87%
That concentration supports two conclusions at once. First, audiences were willing to turn out in very large numbers for recognizable, premium theatrical events. Second, the health of the overall chart depended heavily on those two films. A strong weekend total does not mean every release was performing strongly; the middle and lower portions of the chart were operating on a much smaller scale.
AP reported that ticket sales were running 18.5% ahead of the same period a year earlier, according to Rentrak. AP also reported that five films had already crossed $1 billion worldwide, more than in any year since 2019. Summer theatrical revenue was approximately $14.8 million short of $4 billion through Sunday, with Rentrak forecasting that the threshold would be reached on Monday, August 10.

New wide releases struggle to break through
One Night Only
The weekend’s biggest new wide release, One Night Only, opened to $5,508,045 in 3,012 theaters, averaging $1,829 per location.
AP described the film as a Will Gluck-directed romantic comedy starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner. At the time of that reporting, it carried a 46% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a B+ CinemaScore, while its reported production budget was approximately $25 million. Those reception indicators can change as additional reviews and audience responses are added, so they should be treated as a snapshot rather than a permanent assessment.
Super Troopers 3
Super Troopers 3 opened with $4,002,283 from 2,760 theaters, for a $1,450 per-theater average. The debut placed it fifth overall, behind the two blockbusters, One Night Only, and the continuing run of Toy Story 5.

Ice Cream Man began with $2,010,000 from 1,682 theaters, averaging $1,195 per location. CatVideoFest 2026 earned $568,414 from 255 theaters, while Tony posted the weekend’s standout limited-release average: approximately $58,166 from six locations. That six-theater result is not directly comparable with the wide-release averages because the films had radically different release footprints.

What the weekend says about theatrical exhibition
The clearest lesson is not simply that one superhero film won. It is that event cinema can sustain extraordinary scale even after opening weekend, while a premium-format film can continue building a billion-dollar global run several weeks into release.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day supplied the overwhelming majority of the weekend’s revenue and reached roughly $654 million domestically in only 10 days. The Odyssey showed that a second major attraction could remain commercially significant alongside it, with its IMAX contribution highlighting the role of premium screens in the current theatrical economy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAt the same time, the new releases reveal the difficulty of competing for attention when audiences are already committed to two large-scale titles. One Night Only was the strongest newcomer, but its $5.5 million opening was less than one-quarter of The Odyssey‘s weekend and less than 4% of Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s total.

Frequently Asked Questions
What was the top movie at the domestic box office from August 7–9, 2026?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day finished first with $144,254,386 from 4,487 theaters. It was the film’s second weekend in release and brought its domestic total to $654,342,914 after 10 days, according to The Numbers.
What does “domestic box office” mean in this chart?
For this report, “domestic” means the United States and Canada. The weekend figures cover Friday through Sunday, August 7–9, 2026, rather than a four-day holiday reporting period.
How much of the weekend box office came from the top two films?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey combined for approximately $175.97 million, or about 87% of the $202.31 million total reported by The Numbers for the 56 reporting films.
How did The Odyssey perform in IMAX?
Associated Press reported that The Odyssey had generated $147.3 million domestically from IMAX engagements. That is a format-specific gross and should not be added again to the film’s overall domestic total.
The Bottom Line
The August 7–9 weekend was blockbuster-heavy rather than evenly broad. Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivered a rare $144.3 million second weekend, The Odyssey remained a major draw at $31.7 million, and together they accounted for roughly 87% of the domestic market. The theatrical recovery is real in the headline numbers—but this chart shows how much that recovery currently depends on a small number of event films.
