Waze introduced a limited-time Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire driving experience in March 2024, pairing Ray Stantz’s voice—performed by Dan Aykroyd—with an Ecto-1 vehicle icon and a Mini-Puft-inspired map mood. It was announced as globally available with English voice navigation, but Waze says special voices are temporary and may be region-limited. In 2026, treat the Ghostbusters option as a past promotion: it is available to you only if it still appears in your app.
What the Ghostbusters experience added
The promotion was a set of customizations layered onto Waze, not a separate navigation app or a new routing system. Its three main elements were:
- Ray Stantz voice navigation: Dan Aykroyd voiced the character. Waze also added Ghostbusters-themed lines and references to paranormal activity, PKE meters and ectoplasmic energy.
- Ecto-1 vehicle icon: The car shown on the map could be changed to the Ghostbusters’ familiar vehicle.
- “Spooky” Mood: A map mood inspired by the film’s Mini-Pufts.
Waze announced the experience on March 20, 2024, as a tie-in to Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which opened in theaters on March 22. The announcement described the experience as available globally with English voice navigation—not as a feature available in every language or guaranteed on every device. How users activated it at launch
Waze’s launch instructions were to update the app, open it and look for a Ghostbusters banner in the left-side menu. Tapping the banner activated the experience.
If you are checking whether the voice is still offered, Waze’s general voice-selection route is:
- Open Waze and tap the sound icon.
- Under Current voice, tap the voice shown.
- Search for the desired voice or language, then select it if it appears.
App labels and menu layout can vary by device, language and version. The banner was the promotion’s launch-era entry point; the sound menu is the general route for choosing a voice, not a guarantee that an expired promotion can be restored.

Waze’s help documentation says special voices are generally available for a limited time and may be restricted by region. It does not establish a specific end date for the Ghostbusters promotion. Because the campaign dates from 2024, do not assume it remains available in 2026; check the voice selector in your own app. If Ray Stantz is not listed, Waze may no longer be distributing the voice, or it may not be available in your region. Waze’s announcement confirms English voice navigation at launch, but does not say whether this particular voice pack spoke every street name. Waze distinguishes voices that include street names from those that do not. Check the voice’s listing in the app if street-name announcements matter to you.
If the option is missing or not working
- No banner: The launch banner may have disappeared with the promotion. Update Waze, then check the voice selector; if Ghostbusters is absent there too, it may have expired or be unavailable in your area.
- Using Android Auto or CarPlay: Waze says to disconnect the phone from the car system before changing the voice. Change it in the Waze app on the phone, then reconnect.
- Voice changes but Ecto-1 or the map mood does not: Treat voice, vehicle icon and mood as separate customizations. Check each setting in the app; selecting a voice does not necessarily apply the other visual elements.
- The voice is selected but directions are hard to follow: Test it while parked before a trip. A character voice may be less neutral or concise than a standard navigation voice, and the available street-name behavior depends on the voice listing.
Complete setup before driving. If the voice is no longer available, use another voice from Waze’s selector rather than downloading unofficial voice files or modified app versions.

Turning the experience off
To change the narration, open the voice selector and choose another available voice. Waze says that when a limited-time special voice expires, navigation resets to the default and the special voice no longer appears under Current voice. If the vehicle icon or mood remains changed, adjust those separately.
