Short answer: Yasuke was a real person who served Oda Nobunaga and received privileges associated with samurai status. But the surviving evidence does not settle whether he was a samurai in the precise historical sense. Some historians argue that the evidence supports that description; others stress that the records are sparse and the meaning of “samurai” was not fixed in the 1580s.
What the historical record supports
Yasuke’s existence and service under Oda Nobunaga are not the central points of dispute among the historians discussed here. The difficulty is determining exactly what status he held. The surviving accounts are limited, and the evidence for particular privileges is not uniform across the manuscripts and interpretations.
That distinction matters: evidence that Yasuke served Nobunaga and received material benefits can support calling him a samurai, but it does not by itself prove that every historian would apply the label in the same way.
Why the evidence does not produce a simple verdict
Yuichi Goza’s caution about a manuscript account
Historian Yuichi Goza says that few historical records survive about Yasuke, making firm conclusions about parts of his life difficult. He points to one version of the Shincho-ki, held at the Sonkeikaku Library, which says Nobunaga gave Yasuke a sword and a residence. Those privileges would suggest treatment associated with samurai status.

Goza also notes a significant limitation: the sword-and-residence detail appears in that particular manuscript version, rather than across the versions he discusses, and it may have entered through later transcription. Jesuit records, as Goza describes them, portray Yasuke as strong and skilled in entertainment, which could indicate a mix of bodyguard and entertainer duties. Goza cautions against assuming that Yasuke was the heroic sword fighter often imagined in popular depictions; even if he took part in battles, Goza says, he would not have held a command position.
Michael Thornton on vassalage and changing definitions
Michael Thornton, an assistant teaching professor of history at Northeastern University who specializes in Japan, says Yasuke arrived in Japan in the early 1580s with Portuguese Jesuits and was summoned by Nobunaga. He describes Yasuke as serving Nobunaga as a vassal. In Thornton’s account, service as a vassal could bring privileges such as a sword and a stipend—markers associated with samurai status—and the documentary evidence supports Yasuke having such privileges.

But Thornton says the classification remains ambiguous. The definition of samurai was not fixed in the 1580s, and some interpretations place importance on a family relationship that Yasuke did not have. Thornton’s point is not that the evidence proves a single technical label; it is that Yasuke’s service and privileges resemble those associated with samurai status.
Pierre-François Souyri’s affirmative interpretation
Historian Pierre-François Souyri offers a more affirmative reading. He says Japanese texts describe Yasuke as serving Nobunaga and receiving a sword and income, or hōroku. Souyri interprets that income as land or a fief, which, in his view, would make Yasuke a samurai. He also acknowledges that the location of any land and Yasuke’s full name are unknown, and that historians are not entirely in agreement about the classification.

| Historian | What the evidence suggests | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Yuichi Goza | One version of the Shincho-ki says Nobunaga gave Yasuke a sword and residence, suggesting samurai treatment. | The detail is manuscript-specific and may have been added during later transcription. |
| Michael Thornton | Yasuke’s service as a vassal and associated privileges are markers of samurai status. | The category was not fixed in the 1580s, and the technical classification remains ambiguous. |
| Pierre-François Souyri | Service, a sword, and income that he interprets as a fief support calling Yasuke a samurai. | The land’s location and Yasuke’s full name are unknown; historians disagree. |
Does a Japanese historian’s view “confirm” Yasuke was a samurai?
Not as a settled historical conclusion. Souyri’s interpretation supports the claim, while Thornton emphasizes status markers without treating the technical label as certain. Goza highlights how much depends on a single manuscript version whose wording may have changed in transmission. The evidence makes “Yasuke was a samurai” a defensible interpretation, not an uncontested confirmation.

Ubisoft depicts Yasuke as a samurai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but the company frames the game as historical fiction, not a factual representation of history. In a statement to Japanese players, the development team acknowledged that depicting Yasuke as a samurai is debated and said the series uses creative license and fantasy elements. The game’s portrayal is therefore a creative choice, not independent evidence about Yasuke’s historical status.

Ubisoft says it chose Yasuke partly because his story was open-ended and developed beyond what is established historically. In the game’s design, Yasuke is the armored, combat-oriented protagonist, while Naoe emphasizes stealth, parkour, and gadgets. Those contrasting roles describe the game’s characters and gameplay, not a historical finding about Yasuke.
