Sony initially sold its first Walkman in the United States under the name Soundabout. The Japanese launch came first: Sony introduced the TPS-L2 in Japan on July 1, 1979, while the Smithsonian dates its U.S. introduction to June 1980.
What was the Sony Walkman called in the United States?
Sony’s first cassette Walkman, model TPS-L2, was initially sold in the United States as the Soundabout. Sony’s corporate history and its 1999 anniversary release both identify Soundabout as the early U.S. name.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History also identifies the TPS-L2 as a Walkman and records the U.S. introduction as June 1980. Its collection entry notes the Sound-About name in the object’s history; the spelling in Sony’s own account is “Soundabout.”
When did the Walkman arrive in Japan and the United States?
The dates refer to separate market introductions. Sony gives July 1, 1979, as the introduction date for the TPS-L2 in Japan. The Smithsonian dates the U.S. introduction to June 1980. The U.S. launch therefore followed the Japanese debut by nearly a year.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sony’s anniversary release identifies the original model and Japanese date; the Smithsonian collection record supplies the U.S. date. Calling the product “introduced in the U.S. in 1979” would conflate the Japanese launch with its later American arrival.
Why did the Walkman have different names in different countries?
Sony’s corporate history says overseas sales companies objected to “Walkman” because they considered it an unfamiliar or improper English construction. Sony initially used different names by market: Soundabout in the United States, Stowaway in England, and Freestyle in Australia.

In April 1980, Sony chairman Akio Morita declared Walkman the standard product name worldwide at a U.S. sales meeting, according to Sony’s retrospective account. The original regional names were therefore early launch branding, not different models.
Where did the name “Walkman” come from?
Sony traces the name to a young marketing employee’s wordplay combining “Pressman,” the name of a portable recorder, with “Superman.” That is Sony’s corporate account of the name’s origin; the cited history presents it as the company’s explanation rather than an independently corroborated account.

What should collectors know about the original Soundabout?
Collectors looking for the original device should check for model number TPS-L2. The Smithsonian’s collection example is blue and silver, weighs 14 ounces, and is shown with a carrying case and headphones. Those details describe that museum object, not the condition or completeness of every vintage listing.
- Confirm that a listing identifies the model as TPS-L2.
- Check whether the player is described as working and review the seller’s return terms.
- Verify whether the carrying case and headphones are actually included; accessories should not be assumed from the model name alone.
A listing may call the unit a Walkman or Soundabout, but the historic model identification is the more useful check. Current availability, price, seller reliability, and working condition vary by listing.
