Yes. Kevin Nash was accidentally stabbed during a knife-fight scene in the 2004 film The Punisher. Nash said the real knife had not been switched for the retractable prop, but that the blade was blunted; later reporting described a puncture wound near his collarbone. The accounts do not establish that he nearly died, so “near death” overstates what is documented.
What happened during the fight scene?
Nash played The Russian, the formidable opponent of Thomas Jane’s Frank Castle. During their fight, Jane used what he believed was a retractable butterfly-knife prop. Nash later said a weapons crew member failed to replace the real knife with the prop.

In an interview transcribed by WrestlingFigs, Nash explained: “Thank God it was blunted, but the weapons guy that was switching out the knives, and he made a mistake, didn’t switch it out.” The intended prop had a spring mechanism that allowed its blade to retract. WrestlingFigs’ interview recap carries Nash’s account.
What injury did Nash suffer?
A later account described the wound as a puncture near Nash’s collarbone. Nash said he stayed in character rather than stop the scene. Jane later recalled realizing the knife had gone into Nash and remembered Nash reacting calmly. Yardbarker’s account, updated March 13, 2025, recounts both men’s descriptions.

Was it really a near-death experience?
The accounts support an accidental stabbing with a blunted knife and a puncture wound; they do not establish that Nash was close to dying. Calling it a “near-death experience” turns the possibility of a serious on-set accident into a claim about the outcome that the available accounts do not support. The incident was dangerous, but its potential severity should not be confused with evidence that Nash nearly died.
How did the accounts become known?
Nash described the weapons mix-up in an interview, while Jane later recounted his realization during the scene on an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, as reported by The Sportster. SlashFilm also reported Jane’s account in its May 15, 2023 article, “The Punisher’s Thomas Jane Stabbed His Co-Star Kevin Nash With A Knife For Real.” These are retrospective accounts; they are not a production-safety report or independent medical record.

- Waging his one-man war on the world of organized crime, ruthless vigilante-hero Frank Castle sets his sights on overeager mob boss Billy Russoti. After Russoti is left horribly disfigured by Castle, he sets out for vengeance under his new alias: Jigsaw.
Where the scene fits in the film
The scene belongs to the 2004 film The Punisher, with Jane as Frank Castle and Nash as The Russian. If you are revisiting the movie, look for that knife fight to see the sequence that the two actors later discussed; the accounts above explain the accident, not whether every detail is visible on screen.
