Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 was pulled from its planned U.S. theatrical release on August 16, 2024, so audiences could have more time to discover the first film, according to New Line Cinema. The film was not thereby cancelled: it later had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2024. That festival screening did not establish a new general release date.
Why was Horizon 2 pulled from its August release?
On July 10, 2024, a New Line Cinema spokesperson confirmed that Horizon: Chapter 2 would not open in U.S. theaters on August 16 as planned. The studio said it and Territory Pictures wanted to give audiences more time to discover the first installment, including through premium video on demand (PVOD) and Max.
“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release ‘Horizon: Chapter 2’ on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of ‘Horizon’ over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and MAX.”
That was the stated reason for removing the date; the announcement did not give Chapter 2 a replacement date. ABC News also reported Territory Pictures saying the audience response to the first film and enthusiasm for the story’s continuation had been gratifying. ABC News, July 10, 2024.

Was the film cancelled?
No cancellation was announced in the July decision. Chapter 2 went on to receive a public screening: the Venice Film Festival lists its world premiere on September 7, 2024, in the festival’s out-of-competition section. A festival premiere is a distinct event from a wide theatrical opening or a home-video release, and does not itself set either date.
What happened at the Venice premiere?
La Biennale di Venezia’s official 2024 listing identifies the film as a U.S. production directed by Kevin Costner, with Costner and Jon Baird credited as screenwriters. It lists a running time of 190 minutes and English as the language. The festival synopsis places the story in a nineteenth-century New Mexico Territory river settlement, with settlers and soldiers, rail magnates and cattle traders, Indigenous Americans, and Chinese migrant workers among its interwoven groups.

In his director’s statement for the festival, Costner said he began developing the idea in 1988, pursued production in 2003 after Open Range, and that he and John Baird developed it into a four-film saga: “In the two decades since, John Baird and I grew Horizon into a four-film saga.” La Biennale di Venezia, 2024 film listing and director’s statement.
