Kevin Costner said he wanted Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 to consider the confusion Indigenous people faced as settlers arrived claiming land had been offered to them. That explains the perspective he intended to dramatize; it does not, by itself, show whether the finished film represents Native people accurately or successfully.

What did Costner say about the Native American perspective?

In a May 2024 Associated Press interview, Costner was asked what Native American perspective he wanted to consider while dramatizing settlers’ westward movement. His short answer was: “Confusion about it.” He described Native people confronting newcomers who said they had received claims to the land, while those leaving the East did not return. In his framing, the repeated arrivals and competing claims were difficult for Indigenous people to make sense of. Associated Press interview, May 2024.

At a National Board of Review post-screening Q&A, Costner characterized the conflict as “an unfair fight” and said Indigenous people “didn’t stand a chance.” He described them as fighting for their way of life, religion, neighbors, and children, while settlers were drawn by promises of a home. Those are Costner’s interpretations of the conflict and of the film’s framing, not independent historical findings. National Board of Review Q&A, July 19, 2024.

How does Chapter 1 frame the story?

The film is set in nineteenth-century New Mexico Territory and follows a river settlement through interwoven, often conflicting points of view. La Biennale di Venezia’s synopsis names settlers, soldiers, rail magnates, cattle traders, Indigenous Americans, and Chinese migrant workers among the perspectives represented. The festival lists the runtime as 181 minutes and credits Jon Baird and Costner with the screenplay. La Biennale di Venezia.

Netflix’s January 2025 film guide describes the story as fictional, spanning 15 years across pre- and post-Civil War America, and following an Apache tribe alongside settlers. Its plot summary says an Apache group burns the emerging settlement after it has been established on land the settlers intend to call home. The guide lists Owen Crow Shoe as Pionsenay and Tatanka Means as Taklishim. Netflix Tudum, January 2025.

Does the film’s intention establish representational success?

No. A filmmaker’s stated aim and a film’s effect are separate questions. Costner’s comments tell viewers how he says he approached the conflict; they do not establish how much narrative agency Indigenous characters receive, whether their lives extend beyond confrontation with settlers, or how Native viewers assess the portrayal.

The sources cited here establish the film’s premise and Costner’s stated framing, but they do not establish Native audience or critic consensus, nor do they settle the film’s historical or cultural accuracy. A fuller assessment would need Native-led criticism and direct commentary, as well as close attention to whose point of view shapes individual scenes, the Indigenous characters’ motives and relationships, and the Indigenous performers’ and creative participants’ perspectives.
