In March 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery removed the remaining classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies theatrical shorts from Max in the United States, according to the Los Angeles Times. The newspaper reported that the final batch contained 255 cartoons and that the removals completed the departure of Warner Bros. theatrical shorts made from 1930 through 1969. The loss was of convenient access through a streaming subscription—not evidence that the films were destroyed or that Warner Bros. gave up ownership.
What Warner Bros. removed from Max
The Los Angeles Times reported on March 18, 2025, that Max had removed 255 remaining classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons. The paper described an earlier removal in 2022; the March action completed the removal from Max of the Warner Bros. theatrical shorts produced between 1930 and 1969. Those figures and dates are the newspaper’s account, not a studio-published inventory.
That distinction matters: a streaming catalogue is a way to watch films, not a record of whether the films still exist. The reporting establishes a change in Max availability. It does not establish that the cartoons were erased, destroyed, or removed from Warner Bros.’ ownership.
Why did Max remove Looney Tunes?
The specific reason has not been confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery in the cited reporting. The Los Angeles Times discussed possible financial incentives and audience metrics as interpretations of the decision, but those are not an official explanation. There is no substantiated basis here to say that a particular tax strategy, viewership figure, or business motive caused the removal.

Where can you watch classic Looney Tunes cartoons now?
The March 2025 report is a dated catalogue snapshot, not a current availability guide. Streaming rights and catalogues can change by date and territory, and the available evidence does not establish where every classic short can be watched today. Check the current catalogue in your country before subscribing or renting in expectation of finding a particular cartoon.
Streaming and later series
At the time of its report, the Los Angeles Times said several later productions remained on Max: Looney Tunes Cartoons (2020), New Looney Tunes (2015), Baby Looney Tunes (2002), Tiny Toons Looniversity (2023), Bugs Bunny Builders (2022), and The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries (1995). That historical list does not confirm their availability now, and these newer series are not the same collection as the 1930–1969 theatrical shorts.

DVD collections
The newspaper reported that Looney Tunes DVD collections were still for sale when it covered the removal. That supports looking for physical editions, but does not establish that any particular set is complete, in stock, or playable in every region. Before buying, check the edition’s contents, region format, condition, and the seller’s current listing. No single collection should be assumed to contain every short.
Are newer Looney Tunes releases a replacement?
No. A later series or feature can keep the characters visible, but it is a different kind of release from the classic theatrical shorts and does not restore those shorts to a streaming catalogue.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced that The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie would stream exclusively on Max in the United States beginning June 27, after distribution with Ketchup Entertainment. That announcement concerned a separate feature film; it did not say that the classic shorts had returned.
Coyote vs. Acme followed its own path. The Associated Press reported in March 2025 that Ketchup Entertainment had acquired worldwide distribution rights after Warner Bros. shelved the completed film in 2023. The live-action/animation hybrid, directed by Dave Green and starring John Cena and Will Forte, follows Wile E. Coyote suing Acme over faulty products. AP later reported that it opened theatrically in 2026, estimating its opening weekend at $15.5 million. That figure is an estimate for that reported weekend, not a final gross, and neither the film’s shelving nor its eventual release explains the Max catalogue decision.

What the disappearance means for animation history
The phrase “buried 95 years of animation history” captures how abrupt the loss of easy access felt, but it overstates what the reported event proves if read literally. The removed catalogue covered shorts made across 1930–1969—not 95 years of productions—and the reporting concerns their presence on one streaming service. It does not show that the films themselves vanished.
The practical consequence is narrower and still significant: viewers lost one convenient subscription-based route to a large body of classic animation. For anyone trying to see a specific short, the useful questions are now which version or collection includes it, whether that source is available in the viewer’s territory, and whether it is currently accessible by streaming or physical media.
