A reliable, complete figure for Walt Disney’s personal net worth when he died has not been established in the authoritative sources cited here. Disney died on December 15, 1966. A Supreme Court opinion documents how part of his estate was distributed and administered, but it does not give a total estate valuation. The later value of The Walt Disney Company is not a measure of his personal fortune.
Why there is no dependable single number

What the estate records do establish
Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901, and died on December 15, 1966, according to D23’s official biography. A U.S. Supreme Court opinion concerning the estate reports that 45% of the residue was left to a designated charitable trust. It also says the executors sold securities belonging to the residue in 1967 and 1968.

Those details describe a distribution and later estate administration, not the estate’s total value. The 45% figure is a share of the residue; it is not 45% of a documented net-worth total, and it cannot be used to calculate one without knowing the amount and valuation basis of that residue.
Walt Disney’s fortune was not the company’s later valuation
Walt Disney was an individual who held personal property and business interests. The Walt Disney Company is a separate business, and its value in later decades cannot be substituted for his personal net worth at death. A sound estimate would need to establish what company shares and other interests he personally owned in 1966 and how those interests were valued, alongside his other assets and liabilities.

D23 describes Disney as the creator of Mickey Mouse and founder of Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The National Archives’ account of Laugh-O-gram Films documents that his early Kansas City animation company entered bankruptcy proceedings in 1923 before he moved to California. These milestones help explain his career, but neither establishes the assets he personally owned in 1966.
How to evaluate a claimed net-worth estimate
- Check the date. Is the figure an estimate at Disney’s death, a later valuation, or a modern inflation-adjusted equivalent?
- Check what is being measured. Does it mean gross estate, taxable estate, net estate, or an informal personal-wealth estimate?
- Check the business interests. Does the source document his ownership and valuation of shares or other business assets, rather than assuming the company’s later value belonged to him?
- Check the evidence. Does the figure trace to a probate record, estate-tax return, or other source that supports that exact amount?
The IRS’s historical personal-wealth reports use information from estate-tax returns to estimate wealth for wealthy Americans. That methodology provides context for wealth estimates, but the page does not supply a Walt Disney-specific figure.

A legacy beyond a net-worth estimate
In D23’s biography, Disney described his hope for the California Institute of the Arts: “It’s the principal thing I hope to leave when I move on to greener pastures. If I can help provide a place to develop the talent of the future, I think I will have accomplished something.” The remark speaks to the legacy he wanted to leave; it is not evidence of the size of his estate.
