Choose according to what the server must do—play a finished video, encode it, or render complex OBS scenes—then check CPU and memory under a representative test and confirm the plan’s outbound-transfer allowance for your chosen location. Vultr’s documentation does not establish a guaranteed minimum plan for a particular resolution.
Start by identifying the streaming workload
A server looping a pre-rendered video has a different job from one capturing live inputs, encoding video, rendering overlays and transitions, or sending multiple outputs. Those additional tasks can increase CPU, memory, and possibly GPU demands. A resolution label alone does not tell you whether an instance is sufficient: performance depends on the actual workload and settings.
- Pre-rendered playout: The video is already encoded; the server sends it to YouTube. A standard Cloud Compute instance may be a reasonable starting point, but validate it under your real stream.
- OBS encoding or scenes: Measure CPU and memory while OBS is active. Vultr’s Ubuntu/OBS guide advises lowering output resolution or moving to a plan with more vCPUs if CPU use is high.
- GPU-integrated, remotely accessible OBS: Vultr’s Broadcaster Marketplace guide uses an A16 GPU instance and describes GPU integration. That is a workflow-specific option, not a universal requirement for YouTube streaming.
- Transcoding or persistently CPU-limited work: Compare general-purpose, CPU-optimized, memory-optimized, and other compute categories against measured needs. A category name does not guarantee a particular resolution or frame rate.
Vultr’s OBS and Ubuntu guide and compute documentation describe monitoring and choosing resources; neither publishes a plan-to-quality guarantee.
Choose a compute path, not a guessed resolution tier
| Workload | Vultr path to evaluate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Looping finished video or modest OBS use | Standard Cloud Compute with OBS on Ubuntu | CPU and memory remain comfortable during sustained playback and streaming; high CPU may require lower output resolution or more vCPUs. |
| Sustained CPU limits or demanding transcoding | Compare dedicated or optimized compute options available for your workload | Actual resource use, plan specifications, regional availability, and price. Do not infer stream quality from the product category alone. |
| Browser-accessible OBS with GPU-integrated scene rendering | Vultr Broadcaster Marketplace app on an A16 GPU instance | That this workflow’s GPU and remote-access features are needed; a simple headless playout may not need this configuration. |
Vultr’s Broadcaster guide documents its A16 GPU deployment and YouTube destination setup. For current product availability, specifications, and rates, consult the Vultr pricing guidance and the plan details for your deployment region; Vultr notes that regional pricing can vary.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set the YouTube ingest target before sizing bandwidth
YouTube’s current encoder-settings table gives recommended bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Examples include:
| Output | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not promises that a particular Vultr instance can encode at those settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before configuring an encoder, since recommendations can change.

Estimate outbound transfer for a continuous stream
At 1 Mbps, a continuous stream sends approximately 10.8 GB per day, or about 324 GB over 30 days, using decimal units. This is a calculation from bitrate and time, before protocol overhead or a backup stream—not a published Vultr or YouTube allowance. Multiply the estimate by the bitrate in Mbps and by the number of simultaneous outputs to approximate total transfer.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; its advice applies to the total stream capacity, including a backup stream if you use one. Vultr counts outbound traffic toward bandwidth usage, while inbound traffic does not count. Check the selected instance’s included transfer and overage terms, then monitor usage and any overages in the Vultr console. See YouTube’s streaming tips and Vultr’s bandwidth billing explanation.

Test the plan before relying on it around the clock
- Configure the intended stream. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, scenes, overlays, and audio you expect to run continuously.
- Run a representative test. Include typical video movement and audio, not only a static screen. Check YouTube’s stream-health status and confirm the encoder is sending at the expected settings.
- Observe sustained resource use. Monitor CPU and memory—and GPU use when the workflow uses one—along with outbound transfer. A brief successful start does not establish that the instance can sustain the workload.
- Check the operating pattern. If you expect to close a remote desktop session, confirm the stream remains active after disconnecting. Vultr’s Broadcaster documentation calls out checking OBS’s live counter and CPU use; its Ubuntu guide warns that high CPU can cause dropped frames and buffering.
- Adjust based on evidence. If CPU is high, reduce output resolution or move to more vCPUs as Vultr advises. If the test is stable, still verify the projected transfer against the instance’s current allowance before a long deployment.
Check channel eligibility and content rights
Before configuring a long-running stream, confirm that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s getting-started guidance states a minimum age of 16. Review the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility requirements before going live. A VPS does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material in a stream; use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for the intended use.
