The feature let users download an eligible title inside the app and watch it without a live internet connection. It did not create a permanent, transferable video file. Because VUDU now redirects to Fandango at Home, the 2016 announcement should be treated as historical unless the current app and title terms confirm otherwise.
What version 5.0 changed
Contemporaneous coverage reported that VUDU Android app version 5.0 added downloads for rented movies and shows so they could be played offline. The announcement described storage and playback within the VUDU app, not an ordinary video file that could be copied, exported, or played in another app. See the November 11, 2016 report.

- Offline download: An eligible rental was stored locally for controlled playback in the authorized app.
- Not permanent ownership: Downloading did not turn a rental into an indefinite purchase.
- Not file export: The report did not describe DRM-free files or transfers between devices.
- Practical benefit: Playback could continue during travel or where a connection was slow or unavailable.
How offline viewing was expected to work
The report did not preserve verified button names or a complete menu path. The safest reconstruction of the workflow is:
- Install or update the Android VUDU app to version 5.0 or later.
- Sign in to the account that rented the movie or show.
- Open the rented title and check whether the app offers an offline-download control.
- Start the download while connected to the internet, preferably over Wi-Fi.
- Wait until the download has completed before leaving coverage.
- Play the title from inside the app while offline.
A downloaded title would still be governed by the rental license. The 2016 report did not specify the exact rental window, playback deadline, or validation schedule, so downloading should not be understood as extending access.

Which Android devices were covered?
The contemporaneous article discussed VUDU on Android phones, tablets, and Android TV. That establishes the platforms mentioned in the announcement, not identical offline-download support on every model or configuration.
| Platform | What the 2016 coverage establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Android phones | VUDU was presented as an Android platform with the version 5.0 update. | Every phone model, Android release, or title supported downloads. |
| Android tablets | Tablets were included in the Android-platform context. | Feature parity with phones or a specific storage requirement. |
| Android TV | Android TV was mentioned as a supported VUDU environment. | That Android TV devices could download rentals in the same way as phones and tablets. |
| Other platforms | Not established by this announcement. | Support for iPhone, iPad, Roku, smart TVs, consoles, or web browsers. |
Rentals, purchases, and linked discs were not the same thing
Rented titles
Offline rental playback was the specific capability emphasized by the announcement. It is safer to say that the update reported support for eligible rented titles than to claim that every rental could be downloaded.

Purchased titles
The coverage described VUDU as carrying content users could own, rent, or buy, but it did not provide a complete eligibility table for purchased content. Do not infer that all purchased titles had the same offline rights.
Linked Blu-ray and DVD content
The Google Play listing cited by the article said Blu-ray or DVD content linked to a VUDU account could be accessed through the app. “Accessible” does not prove that those disc-linked titles were downloadable offline or had the same rules as rentals.

Limits the 2016 announcement left unanswered
- The exact rental duration and the point at which offline playback stopped were not published in the report.
- Downloading did not necessarily extend the rental period.
- The app might require account or license validation from time to time.
- Eligibility could vary by title, device, country, or licensing agreement.
- The report did not say whether a download could be moved to another device.
In practical terms, a rental downloaded before a trip could still become unavailable if its license expired while the viewer was away.
What to do if an offline title will not play
The following are general app and DRM precautions, not menu instructions verified by the 2016 article:
Rank #4
- Redemption: Online
- Available for use at your favorite theater, thousands of theaters nationwide
- Perfect gift for the movie enthusiast, holidays, birthdays or just to say thanks!
- Card is redeemable only for purchase of movie tickets and associated convenience fees or purchase or rental of content on Fandango and participating Fandango apps
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards
- Reconnect briefly and open the app before traveling.
- Confirm the download finished instead of remaining queued or partial.
- Check that the rental has not expired.
- Verify that the same account used to rent the title is signed in.
- Make sure the device has enough free storage.
- Update the app if the title will not open.
- Avoid clearing app data or uninstalling until you understand the license status, because local downloads may be removed.
Does VUDU offline rental playback still work in 2026?
There is no basis here for treating version 5.0 behavior as a current product specification. The VUDU website now redirects to Fandango at Home (the destination is athome.fandango.com), verified on August 18, 2026. The available documentation confirms the 2016 Android announcement but does not confirm the current app’s offline rental support, device list, title eligibility, expiration rules, or reauthorization requirements.
Before renting for a flight, road trip, hotel stay, or weak-coverage area, check the current Fandango at Home app listing, help pages, and the individual title’s terms. Do not assume that an old VUDU download will remain available after a rebrand, app change, device change, or rental expiry.

Why the feature mattered
For a digital rental service, offline playback removed the need to stream continuously. That reduced buffering and made a rental practical on planes, during travel, and in places with unreliable broadband. Its significance was convenience, not permanent ownership: the download remained controlled by the service and the rental’s license.
