Either a VPS or a spare PC can run a 24/7 YouTube stream. A spare PC uses hardware you already have but relies on your home power, internet connection, and ongoing maintenance. A VPS moves the encoder off your home network, but adds compute costs, outbound-transfer charges, and cloud administration. Neither option guarantees uninterrupted streaming; the right choice depends on measured costs, encoding performance, and how you will monitor and recover the stream.
What YouTube requires from the encoder
YouTube evaluates the feed your encoder sends—not whether the encoder runs at home or in a data center. The relevant settings include ingestion protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can sustain and testing the stream before going live. Its guidance says, “Make sure you choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection,” and, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance also recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages while live.
Bitrate recommendations
The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s recommended bitrates for the listed resolutions and frame rates; they are not guarantees of quality or minimum upload-speed requirements.

Your sustained upload must carry the selected bitrate reliably. Test from the actual network and encoder location, and include the kind of audio and movement that will appear in the stream. Leave practical capacity for network variation and other traffic; testing, rather than a universal multiplier, should determine how much headroom you need.

Protocol, codec, and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Follow the current guidance together with the capabilities of your encoder. A VPS does not make an unsuitable encoder or unstable upload path suitable.
Spare PC: use your own machine and connection
A spare PC is a sensible candidate if it can run the chosen encoder workload comfortably, your home upload is stable, and you are prepared to administer the machine. Its main cost advantage is conditional: the computer may already be available, but electricity and any necessary upgrades or replacement still count.

What to check before relying on it
- Run the real encoding workload at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Confirm the machine has enough headroom to remain stable.
- Measure average power draw at the wall while encoding, rather than assuming an old computer uses a particular amount.
- Test the home upload with the stream’s actual content and settings. Consider competing household traffic and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Plan for updates, reboots, encoder restarts, and recovery if the stream or the PC stops.
- Account for home power and ISP interruptions. A UPS may bridge some short power cuts, but it will not prevent an ISP outage, equipment failure, or a longer outage; size it for the measured load and required runtime.
Estimate the electricity cost
Use this calculation for the PC’s average measured draw during the streaming workload:
average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per month × electricity price per kWh

Add power consumption from a modem, router, or other equipment only if keeping it on for this stream creates an incremental cost. Include equipment purchases or replacement when they apply. There is no universal monthly electricity cost without your machine’s measured draw, operating hours, and local electricity rate.
VPS: run the encoder on a cloud server
A VPS can remove the encoder host from your home power and ISP path. You still need a correctly sized server, a working encoder configuration, monitoring, and a way to restart or recover the stream. Do not assume a low-cost VPS can encode your video: test CPU performance and output stability using the actual source and settings.

Estimate compute and outbound transfer together
Check the selected plan’s compute capability, included outbound transfer, how the provider counts traffic, and its overage price. The VPS sends the stream feed out to YouTube, so that traffic can count as provider outbound transfer.
DigitalOcean is one provider example, not a universal VPS benchmark. Its official pricing page, retrieved October 3, 2026, lists bundled Droplet plans starting at $4/month, with included outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB/month. The smallest plan is not established as sufficient for video encoding. DigitalOcean’s documentation, last verified in 2026, states that additional outbound Droplet transfer costs $0.01 per GiB, the allowance is pooled across a team, and inbound transfer is free. Plan availability and pricing can change; check the provider’s current terms and exact accounting units before budgeting.

Estimate the stream’s approximate outbound volume from its bitrate:
Mbps × 0.45 ≈ decimal GB per hour
For example, a continuous 10 Mbps stream is about 4.5 GB per hour, or about 3,240 GB over 30 days, before protocol overhead and unit-conversion differences. This is arithmetic from the bitrate, not a published YouTube statistic. Compare the estimate with the provider’s transfer allowance using that provider’s units and pooling rules.

These are conditional criteria, not a reliability ranking. There are no comparable uptime measurements here for a spare PC versus a VPS; your local power and network history, provider terms, server sizing, and recovery setup all matter.
Prepare and monitor either setup
- Choose an output YouTube supports. Set protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval according to current YouTube guidance and your encoder’s capabilities.
- Verify the upload path. Test from the location where the encoder will run. Use representative audio and motion, and confirm the stream remains stable at the intended settings.
- Configure the YouTube stream key privately. Enter the key in the encoder’s streaming settings; do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-streaming controls and update the encoder.
- Test before committing to 24/7 operation. Confirm YouTube receives the stream and check its stream-health status and messages. Review the feed for audio, picture, and continuity problems.
- Set up recovery and monitoring. Decide how you will learn that the feed has stopped and how to restart the encoder or stream. A VPS still needs this operational plan, as does a local PC.
- Use content you are entitled to stream. A continuous feed does not exempt you from YouTube’s copyright rules or other policies. Check rights for every video, music track, and other element. Reused material may also raise monetization-policy issues; permission to use a work and eligibility for monetization are separate questions.
