vMix HD vs 4K: Which License Fits a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Channel?

For a looping YouTube channel up to 1080p, vMix HD usually covers the need. Choose 4K for 4K output or specific production features—not simply for a 24/7 runtime.

For a 24/7 YouTube playlist that tops out at 1080p, vMix HD is generally enough. Both HD and 4K list streaming and Playlist support; the 4K lifetime license is the relevant choice when you need 4K output or edition-specific production features such as recording multiple sources, Instant Replay, or PTZ control. Neither edition turns vMix into a time-of-day broadcast scheduler, and a continuous stream needs a deliberate archive plan.

HD or 4K: the short decision

Choose When it fits Listed lifetime license price
vMix HD Your channel output is 1080p or lower, and you need streaming plus a basic repeating playlist. $350 USD
vMix 4K You need output up to 4096 Ă— 2160, or a feature listed for 4K and higher editions that HD does not include. $700 USD

These are the prices and edition specifications shown in vMix’s comparison page when checked on 2026-10-03; prices and terms can change. The comparison lists HD’s maximum resolution as 1920 × 1080 and 4K’s as 4096 × 2160. Both include streaming and Playlist. See the vMix edition comparison.

Do not buy 4K just because the stream will run continuously. Resolution and production features—not duration—are the meaningful edition differences for this choice.

What 4K adds beyond resolution

vMix’s comparison and edition guide place several capabilities in the 4K/Pro/Max group rather than HD. Consider them only if they are part of your actual workflow:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • 4K support.
  • Recording each camera separately; the comparison lists two recorders for 4K, while HD does not list that capability.
  • Instant Replay for one camera.
  • Two fullscreen or external outputs at once.
  • PTZ control.
  • Up to four vMix Call callers.

The HD-versus-4K comparison is not the whole edition ladder: if one of these features matters, verify the exact edition requirements on vMix’s edition-selection guide before buying.

What “24/7 playlist” means in vMix

vMix can play videos back-to-back in a loop, but it is not described as a full television-style scheduling system. Its Knowledge Base says vMix is primarily designed for single live events and does not support time-of-day scheduling. A playlist can therefore suit a channel that repeats material continuously, but it will not by itself handle a timetable such as “start this documentary at 8 p.m.” vMix’s scheduling explanation was last updated 2025-01-17.

Playlist versus Video List

For simple back-to-back playback, Playlist is available in both editions. vMix also describes Video List as a way to load multiple files as one input, then play them back-to-back, loop, or randomize. It avoids loading every video at once, which can consume system resources. Choose the playback approach that fits your library and verify behavior with your actual media before relying on an unattended channel.

Set up the YouTube stream and playlist

  1. Choose the edition by output and production needs. If you will output at 1080p or below and only need a looping list, start with HD. Select 4K only for 4K output or a needed edition feature.
  2. Prepare and test the playlist. Add the videos to Playlist or configure a Video List, then test back-to-back playback and looping with the files you intend to use. vMix does not provide time-of-day scheduling in the described workflow.
  3. Create or configure the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create/configure the stream and copy its stream key, or use vMix’s YouTube Live Stream Now option to create the stream from vMix. The vMix guide documents both paths: How to stream to YouTube Live (last updated 2025-04-09).
  4. Enter the stream key in vMix and go live. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to that stream. Follow the current YouTube and vMix setup prompts for the selected path.
  5. Check the actual output and unattended behavior. Confirm that the stream reaches YouTube at the intended resolution and that playback continues across the playlist. A setup guide is not an uptime guarantee; plan how you will detect and recover from interruptions.

Plan the archive separately from the live loop

A 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as one guaranteed, complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive as backup, and warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says it automatically archives streams at 1440p and 2160p. For an always-on channel, decide whether to record locally and how you will manage stream duration and archive segments rather than assuming the full broadcast will be available afterward. Check the computer before committing to a 24/7 setup

vMix lists Windows 10/11, a 2 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB memory, a dedicated DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics card, and a 1920 × 1080 display as minimum requirements. Its recommended specifications include an Intel Core i7 at 3 GHz or higher, 8 GB RAM, an SSD, dedicated Nvidia graphics with 2 GB or more memory, and a 1920 × 1080 display. Actual demands depend on inputs, outputs, recording, resolution, and the computer. See vMix’s supported hardware page.

An SSD is a recommendation, not a stated requirement for simply streaming a playlist. It is relevant if you plan local recording or a backup archive, but the cited hardware and YouTube guidance do not establish a particular drive capacity or model. Check storage needs against your recording format and retention plan.

License cost, updates, and trial

The comparison lists lifetime license prices of $350 USD for HD and $700 USD for 4K. It describes the first 12 months of updates as included with lifetime licenses. vMix says those licenses can be used indefinitely and lists a $60 update upgrade for 12 additional months of version updates after the included period. vMix Max is listed at $50 USD per month and includes 4K resolution, but it is a subscription option rather than one of the two lifetime licenses being compared here. Verify current prices and terms on the comparison page and the vMix product page before purchase.

vMix offers a fully functional 60-day trial. Use it to test your required inputs, playlist behavior, output resolution, and edition-specific features before choosing a license. vMix Live Streaming Software.

When a cloud service is a better fit

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service from Yorker Media: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on. Details are at StreamNeo.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

  1. Upload your video or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud.
