For a genuinely sustained 4 Mbps upload, do not set FFmpeg to stream at 4 Mbps: YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth in reserve, leaving about 3.2 Mbps for the stream’s total bitrate. A cautious starting test is 720p30 with H.264 video around 2.5 Mbps and AAC stereo at 128 kbps—but 2.5 Mbps is below YouTube’s stated 3 Mbps minimum for 720p30, not an official recommendation. If you need to stay at or above YouTube’s listed minimum, use 480p30, or try 720p30 at 3 Mbps only if the connection can also carry audio and overhead while retaining headroom. The same YouTube encoder guidance applies in India; choose based on measured upload stability, not location alone.
How much bitrate can a 4 Mbps upload support?
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. Applied to a sustained 4 Mbps connection, that means planning for roughly 3.2 Mbps of total stream bitrate at most. The total includes video, audio and transport/network overhead, so a 3.2 Mbps video setting would already exceed the practical budget. YouTube gives this headroom advice in its streaming tips.
Here, 4 Mbps must mean measured, sustained outbound upload capacity—not the advertised plan speed or a download-test result. If other devices or people share the connection, the capacity available to FFmpeg can fall while you are live.
Which resolution and bitrate should you choose?
YouTube’s live ingest figures below are for H.264; they are not the separate settings for uploading prerecorded videos. The encoder table is published in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance (accessed October 3, 2026; the page does not display a publication year).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | What it means on a sustained 4 Mbps upload |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Not a suitable choice when preserving headroom on this connection. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | At the minimum, 3 Mbps of video leaves little of the roughly 3.2 Mbps planning ceiling for audio and overhead. |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | The listed minimum fits within the available budget more comfortably; expect less image detail than at 720p. |
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | The listed minimum also fits comfortably, at lower resolution. |
Practical starting point: test 720p30 cautiously
If retaining more detail is important, test 1280×720 at 30 fps with H.264 video around 2.5 Mbps and AAC stereo at 128 kbps. This is a conservative trial setting, not a YouTube-endorsed value: it is below the platform’s listed 3 Mbps H.264 minimum for 720p30. Confirm that YouTube reports a healthy stream under conditions resembling the actual broadcast. If it does not, lower the resolution or bitrate.
When to choose a listed minimum instead
If you want to remain at or above YouTube’s published H.264 minimums, 480p30 at its 0.4 Mbps minimum leaves substantially more room for audio and overhead. A 720p30 stream at the listed 3 Mbps minimum is an option only if your measured connection reliably handles the complete stream and still leaves the recommended headroom. A 4 Mbps upload does not make 1080p30 practical under these settings: its listed minimum is already 5 Mbps.

FFmpeg settings to apply and verify
Set these values in your own FFmpeg invocation; no single command is prescribed here because input format, device and stream-key handling vary. YouTube’s encoder recommendations are for the live ingest workflow.
- Video: H.264, progressive. Begin at 1280×720 and 30 fps only if testing shows the connection is stable; otherwise reduce the resolution.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Video bitrate: about 2.5 Mbps for the explicitly below-minimum 720p30 trial, or at least 3 Mbps if adhering to YouTube’s listed 720p30 minimum. With the latter, verify total bandwidth carefully. YouTube’s listed minimum is not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds, and never more than 4 seconds apart. At 30 fps, a 2-second interval is 60 frames. Keep the GOP closed for optimal transcoding.
- Audio: AAC stereo at 128 kbps is a practical choice; YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps for stereo.
- Transport: use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMP variant.
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance specifies the codec and bitrate table, while its live streaming error guidance covers ingest issues such as incorrect bitrate, codec, keyframes and resolution. Follow the settings for live streaming rather than substituting YouTube’s prerecorded-upload bitrate recommendations.

Prepare the connection and test before going live
- Measure outbound upload speed close to the time and place you expect to stream. Use the sustained result, not the advertised package speed, for your bitrate decision.
- Check whether household or office devices will share the connection. If they will, allow for competing traffic rather than assuming the full measured rate is available to FFmpeg.
- Connect the streaming computer by wired Ethernet if practical. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer live streaming; it may improve local-link dependability, but cannot add upload capacity your ISP does not provide.
- Run a test stream with audio and movement similar to the real programme. Inspect the preview and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- If YouTube reports an incorrect bitrate or the stream buffers, lower the resolution or bitrate, confirm that audio is included in your total, and test again.
Does streaming from India change the bitrate?
The reviewed YouTube encoder table does not set a separate bitrate schedule for India. Its platform-level recommendations are the technical reference here; the appropriate setting depends on the sustained upload capacity and reliability at your specific location. No particular city, ISP, carrier or connection type can be assumed to have a given upload performance.
