A Windows restart does not, by itself, prove that the saved production, playlist playback, encoder connection, and public stream have all resumed. Test the whole sequence on the computer and vMix version you intend to use.
What can and cannot be automated
vMix’s List input can play a sequence of video and audio files, advance automatically, and loop. That handles playback order, not a restart or a broadcast schedule. vMix says it does not support time-of-day scheduling; its Playlist and List features are for basic or continuous playback. vMix’s scheduling guidance was last updated January 17, 2025.
Starting the media and starting the YouTube broadcast are separate states. The vMix YouTube Live Stream Now instructions describe selecting or creating a stream and pressing Start in vMix. YouTube also has Auto-start and Auto-stop settings for encoder streams, but those settings should be checked for the particular stream in Live Control Room. The available documentation does not establish a universal Windows procedure that reliably reopens the intended vMix production, resumes playback, and reconnects the stream after an update-triggered reboot.
Prepare the vMix playlist and production
- Create the List input. Add the intended video and audio files, or load an M3U playlist, as a vMix List input. See the vMix List input guide.
- Check playback behavior. Confirm Auto Next and Loop are enabled in the production. Auto Next is enabled by default according to the guide, but verify it rather than relying on the default. Test that the list advances at the end of each item and returns to the beginning as intended.
- Save and test the production. Save the vMix production with the required List input and any other inputs or transitions. Reopen it manually once and confirm the correct files are available and playback behaves as expected.
- Treat Playlist automation as playback automation. If you use vMix Playlist to automate inputs or transitions, test the sequence in a live production. It is not a clock-based scheduler and does not establish that a stream will begin at a particular time.
Configure the YouTube stream separately
- Set the destination in vMix. Follow the vMix YouTube Live Stream Now instructions to create a stream or select the event you intend to use. The documented flow includes pressing Start in vMix.
- Check the correct stream in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, verify the stream setup and stream key for the selected event. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
- Review encoder start and stop behavior. YouTube’s stream settings guidance describes Auto-start and Auto-stop. Check the settings on the specific stream; do not assume they are enabled or that they replace the need to verify vMix’s connection and the event status.
Test a full Windows update and reboot
Before depending on unattended operation, test the complete restart path on the actual computer, Windows build, vMix version, saved production, and YouTube stream configuration. vMix’s startup options documentation describes application options, but it does not establish that a streaming session automatically resumes after reboot. In particular, do not assume that launching vMix also restores the intended preset, resumes the List at the desired point, authenticates successfully, or restarts the YouTube broadcast.

- Let Windows finish its update and restart cycle. Confirm the expected user session is available and the computer has network access.
- Check whether vMix opened the intended saved production. If it did, confirm the List input is playing, advancing, and looping as planned.
- Check vMix’s stream status and the YouTube Live Control Room preview. If the event is not live, use the documented vMix Start flow and verify how the selected stream’s Auto-start setting behaves.
- Open the public watch page. Confirm it shows the current playlist item and that audio is audible, then keep monitoring picture and sound.
Record which of these states your test actually restores: the vMix application and saved production; advancing and looping List playback; a connected encoder and stream marked live; and a public watch page with current video and sound. A successful Windows login alone does not confirm any of the remaining states. The exact startup-task, launch-delay, authentication-persistence, and session-restoration behavior is machine- and configuration-specific; the documentation cited here does not verify a universal recipe.
Check network headroom and the viewer experience
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% above the stream bitrate. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of a stable connection. Its streaming tips also recommend checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality. Test from the public watch page as well as the control room: an encoder connection or preview is not the same as confirming that a viewer can see and hear the intended program.

Troubleshoot after a reboot
