If a YouTube video has a picture in your browser but a black screen in VLC, start by changing VLC’s video output module; then test graphics settings and check for official VLC and graphics-driver updates. These are diagnostic steps, not a confirmed fix for every YouTube black-screen case: VideoLAN’s public FAQ does not identify a current, specific cause for this symptom.
First, find out whether the problem is VLC or the video
- Open the same YouTube URL in a web browser. Note whether the picture appears and whether audio plays.
- If the browser also shows a black picture, VLC’s output module is less likely to be the only cause. Check whether the video itself plays elsewhere and whether the browser or display has a problem.
- If the picture works in the browser but not in VLC, continue with VLC’s video-output and graphics settings.
This comparison is a diagnostic step, not a fix documented by VideoLAN. VLC’s general support for stream playback and hardware decoding does not guarantee that every YouTube URL or local configuration will work (VideoLAN’s VLC features page).
Try a different VLC video output module
VideoLAN recommends testing a different video output module for display problems, with DirectX video output as one example. It notes that advanced options may be needed to show the setting (VideoLAN FAQ).
- Open VLC’s preferences and go to Video → Output or, in versions that label it this way, Video → Output modules.
- If the output-module setting is hidden, enable the advanced or all-settings view in Preferences. The control and exact labels vary by operating system and VLC version.
- Choose a different available video output module. On Windows, DirectX video output is an example; it may not be available on other platforms.
- Save the setting, restart VLC if prompted, and test the same YouTube URL again. If the change makes playback worse, restore the original module.
Because the operating system and VLC version are unknown, there is no single menu path or module choice that applies to every installation.

Check graphics settings and hardware overlay
VideoLAN’s FAQ says hardware video overlay can cause dark video and suggests checking graphics-card settings and turning overlay off. Treat this as a reversible test, not proof that overlay causes a YouTube black screen (VideoLAN FAQ).
- Look for a hardware video overlay option in your graphics settings or VLC configuration; its location and availability depend on the system.
- Turn it off only as a test, then retry the video.
- If the picture does not improve, restore the previous setting.
Check for VLC and graphics-driver updates
Use official update channels for your operating system and VLC build. VideoLAN’s FAQ includes updating the video-board driver among general playback troubleshooting steps, but does not say that a driver update will resolve this exact symptom.

A VLC 3.0.19 change-log entry dated August 6, 2023, lists “Fixes for Youtube playback” and fixes for some Windows hardware-decoding issues (VLC 3.0.19 NEWS update). That is historical release information; it does not establish that your current installation or particular black-screen issue is fixed by updating.
If VLC still plays audio but shows no picture
Before changing more settings, record the details that can distinguish a video-specific problem from an output or decoding problem:

- Your operating system and VLC version.
- Whether audio plays while the picture is black.
- Whether local video files and other streams show a picture in VLC.
- Whether the exact YouTube URL shows video in a browser.
- Which output module and graphics settings you tested, and whether either changed the result.
If only one URL fails, the issue may be specific to that stream or URL rather than VLC’s general video output. If local files and other streams also lack video, focus on VLC’s output or the graphics configuration. These comparisons narrow the possibilities; the available official guidance does not establish one universal cause for this exact symptom.
