If your Vimeo Livestream Studio broadcast is silent on YouTube, first find out whether the silence affects every viewer. Then trace the sound from its source through Studio’s mixer and program output to the encoder and YouTube’s Live Control Room. Studio’s headphone monitoring is separate from stream audio, so silent headphones alone do not prove that viewers are hearing silence.
First, find out who cannot hear the stream
Ask another viewer to check the live stream on a different device or network. Vimeo recommends checking whether the problem affects all viewers; a single viewer’s network or playback setup may explain a different experience. Vimeo’s live-audio troubleshooting guidance also recommends capturing player debug logs while the issue is happening if the problem persists.
- Only one viewer hears silence: Check that viewer’s mute state, device volume and output device, browser or app, and network playback.
- Everyone hears silence: Trace the signal upstream through the audio source, Livestream Studio, encoder, and YouTube ingestion.
- Only the operator’s headphones are silent: Check local monitoring separately. Headphone silence does not establish that the outgoing stream is silent.
Check the audio source and Studio signal path
Confirm the intended input is selected
In Livestream Studio, inspect the intended source in the Inputs settings and Audio Mixer. Each input can have its own audio settings. Confirm that the intended microphone, camera audio, mixer, or audio-only input is selected and that its meter responds when sound is present.
Check the channel assignment as well as the input name. In stereo mode, left and right channels can be assigned to the input fader; in mono mode, individual channels can be assigned. If a device is missing, verify that the operating system recognizes it and that any required driver is installed. Studio can add an audio-only input from a supported system device. See Vimeo’s instructions for adding audio inputs.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Follow the meters to the program output
Follow the signal from the input meter through the production mix to the stream or program output. Vimeo describes Stream Out / Record Out as the typical representation for monitoring program audio. If the source meter moves but program output does not, check the mixer routing, mute state, and level controls before changing YouTube settings. Vimeo’s audio-monitoring documentation explains the Studio monitoring controls.
When Studio meters move but headphones are silent
Local headphone monitoring and the outgoing stream are different paths. If Studio’s meters show sound but you cannot hear it, check the computer’s selected playback device and Studio’s headphone volume and source-monitoring buttons. Vimeo provides playback-output checks for Windows and Mac and notes that headphone source buttons affect local headphone output, not audio sent to the stream or recording.

Check YouTube’s audio health messages and encoder settings
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream health indicator and any specific messages. YouTube lists possible audio errors including no audio, multiple audio streams, unsupported audio codecs, incorrect sample rates, and more than two audio channels. Its guidance for the described RTMP/RTMPS ingestion workflow expects a supported codec such as AAC or MP3 and one audio stream. Follow the error actually shown rather than changing settings at random. See YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance.
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS include AAC or MP3 audio, a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo, and a 128 Kbps stereo audio bitrate. For 5.1 surround sound, the published sample-rate and bitrate recommendations differ; YouTube supports 5.1 only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that changing them will fix every silent stream. Compare them with the specific Live Control Room message and your encoder’s configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

For the Vimeo Livestream Studio destination, verify that the intended YouTube event’s current Stream URL and Stream Key are configured. Vimeo says its Studio-to-YouTube workflow changed as of October 2024 to use a YouTube Stream URL and Stream Key; older instructions may describe a different setup. Check the event preview and health information, and never share your stream key in screenshots or support requests. See Vimeo’s YouTube setup instructions for Livestream Studio.
Test the encoder output and a local recording
Check audio in the encoder itself and inspect a local recording if one is available. YouTube recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder and looking for audio or video problems in the local archive. If both are silent, focus first on source capture, input selection, mixer routing, or encoder configuration. If the encoder preview and archive contain audio but YouTube viewers do not receive it, check YouTube’s ingestion health and the outbound connection. This distinction helps locate where the signal disappears; it is not a substitute for the health messages or a controlled test. See YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance.

Vimeo recommends restarting the encoder, testing the audio workflow with as few components as practical, and removing and re-adding the audio source to establish a fresh connection. Check that capture-device output settings, such as bitrate and sample rate, match the encoder settings. Check cables and the equipment feeding the inputs. Change one item at a time so you can identify which change resolves the problem. See Vimeo’s live-audio troubleshooting steps.

Inspect physical audio connections
Confirm that each cable is fully seated, in good condition, and appropriate for the device and input. Check the equipment feeding the input too. An external microphone may need its own power or a particular setting; Mic versus Line selection, sample rate, and cable type can matter. If the path points to a physical fault, test with a known-good cable that matches your existing hardware. A replacement cable is not a general fix for silence.

Check the outbound connection and contact support
If the source, Studio meters, encoder preview, and local recording all have sound but multiple viewers still hear silence, assess upload stability and the outbound connection. YouTube recommends checking outbound internet strength when encoder output looks and sounds healthy. If you contact Vimeo support, include the encoder, operating system, and playback browser details, and capture player debug logs while the issue is occurring. Keep stream keys private. Vimeo’s troubleshooting guidance is at Vimeo Help Center.
Or let it run in the cloud
This guide is about diagnosing a Vimeo Livestream Studio-to-YouTube audio problem. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded recordings playing as a 24/7 YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists on YouTube—not for going live from a camera.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. For your own recording-time and cost estimates, see the upload-time calculator and cloud vs PC cost calculator. Start your free StreamNeo day.
