Vedaa gives a young Dalit woman’s fight against caste violence the forceful opening and emotional centre of a social drama, but gradually shifts the spotlight toward the familiar spectacle of a male action hero. Sharvari Wagh makes Vedaa’s struggle vivid; the film is less successful at keeping her agency central once the vigilante plot takes over.
What is Vedaa about?
Directed by Nikkhil Advani, this Hindi action thriller follows Vedaa Berwa, a young Dalit woman in Rajasthan who wants to learn boxing while facing discrimination and caste-based violence. Former Army officer Major Abhimanyu Kanwar, played by John Abraham, becomes her mentor and ally. ZEE5’s synopsis frames the conflict around Vedaa protecting her family, and identifies caste-based violence and honour killings among the film’s themes. ZEE5’s listing says Advani drew inspiration from two real-life incidents; it does not identify or verify them, so the film is better described as inspired by true events than as a reenactment of a documented case.
Does Vedaa remain the centre of her own story?
The film’s premise gives Vedaa a clear, active goal: boxing is not just a route into action but a way to claim space and resist a violent social order. Sharvari’s emotionally charged performance helps make that struggle legible, and the rawness of the action gives it urgency. The central tension is what happens after the setup. As Abhimanyu’s intervention and action-hero presence expand, Vedaa’s story increasingly has to share its momentum with his.
The Indian Express review captures the imbalance: “the title belongs to her, the story which moves everything into high gear is hers,” it writes, before criticizing the film for yielding to the male hero’s action demands. That is more than a question of screen time. Vedaa’s struggle begins as a challenge to the structures that limit her; the film’s shift toward a saviour-shaped vigilante plot risks making her liberation something another character delivers.

How does the caste drama work?
Vedaa is most forceful when caste oppression is the story’s source of danger rather than a label attached to an otherwise conventional revenge plot. Its premise connects discrimination, violence and Vedaa’s pursuit of boxing, giving the action an explicit social stake. But a film can name that stake without sustaining its specificity. When conflict primarily serves to send characters into a chain of confrontations, the audience may feel the threat more strongly than it understands the social order producing it.
Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll.in review reads the film as a fantasy of liberation from caste inequity and describes Abhimanyu as its “mythic core.” That formulation points to both the appeal and the limitation: a larger-than-life rescuer can give a story cathartic force, while also pulling attention from the person whose freedom is at stake. The Week similarly calls the film “politically sharp, gritty and mildly feminist,” while arguing that it is ultimately built to enlarge John Abraham’s action-star legend. The disagreement is not whether the film has a political impulse; it is whether that impulse governs the storytelling all the way through.

Do the action and climax serve the story?
The action supplies immediacy and gives Abhimanyu a conventional role in the film’s escalating danger. It is also where the balance becomes most difficult. If the spectacle is driven by the male mentor’s force, it can overwhelm the slower question of how Vedaa claims power for herself. Sreeparna Sengupta’s Times of India review praises Sharvari’s emotionally charged work and the raw action, while finding parts predictable and criticizing the drawn-out, convoluted climax and inserted songs. That response reflects a broader weakness: escalation does not automatically deepen the social drama, and the climax can feel overextended when action is doing more work than character or context.
Verdict: a pointed premise, an uneven centre
Vedaa is worth considering for viewers interested in Hindi action cinema that takes on caste violence, and for Sharvari Wagh’s committed lead performance. Its most promising idea is also its clearest unresolved challenge: a story about a young woman resisting oppression should keep her choices, not only the violence against her or the heroics around her, at the centre. Advani’s film has grit and political intent, but its familiar male-action-star machinery blunts the force of the story it begins telling.
