Vector ends the original Despicable Me stranded on the moon. In the short Mooned, he attempts to escape and winds up stranded on Mars. Despicable Me 4 later shows him in the Anti-Villain League’s custody, which implies he eventually returned to Earth—but the films’ official materials do not explain how he got back from Mars.
What happens to Vector at the end of Despicable Me?
Vector is the villain behind Gru’s moon-heist plot in the 2010 film. After Gru reclaims the moon, Vector is left stranded there. Universal’s film page identifies the movie and its premise; Illumination Studios Paris also describes Gru’s plan to steal the moon on its official film page.
Does Vector escape the moon in Mooned?
Yes—but not successfully. Illumination announced Vector’s return in Mooned, a short shown before Migration, in its announcement. The short’s reported outcome is that Vector’s escape attempt takes him from the moon to Mars, where he is stranded. That Mars destination comes from a franchise reference’s plot account, rather than Illumination’s announcement.
Why is Vector in custody in Despicable Me 4?
Despicable Me 4 later shows Vector among the villains in Anti-Villain League (AVL) custody, as described in franchise reference coverage. Being in custody implies that he eventually made it back to Earth and was captured. The studio’s official synopsis does not explain how or when that happened.

How did Vector get back from Mars?
That journey is not explained in the available official film materials. Vector’s appearance in AVL custody establishes a later outcome, not the events that led to it. There is no established account here of Gru rescuing him or the AVL mounting a mission to Mars, so neither should be treated as canon.
