Usher’s Super Bowl LVIII halftime show was a success—but an intentionally incomplete one. On February 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, he turned roughly 13 minutes into a high-speed summary of a 30-year career: live-band energy, elaborate staging, roller skates, costume changes, tightly drilled choreography, and a parade of collaborators including Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Lil Jon, Ludacris, Jermaine Dupri, and will.i.am.
The result was an entertaining demonstration of veteran showmanship and physical command. It also exposed the central problem of the halftime format: Usher has enough material for a full concert, but not enough time to let many of his best songs reach their emotional or vocal payoff.
The short verdict
Usher’s halftime performance worked best as a spectacular career retrospective rather than as a deeply satisfying concert. He remained the unmistakable center of the production even when guests, dancers, skaters, musicians, camera cuts, and set changes filled the frame. The show made a persuasive case for his durability: he could still sing, dance, host, flirt, move through a large-scale production, and make several generations of hits feel immediately familiar.
Its weakness was the same as its organizing principle. Almost every song arrived as a fragment, transition, or abbreviated chorus. That created momentum and recognition, but it also made the show feel like a highlights reel at points—particularly in the middle, where one celebrated relationship or hit followed another before the previous moment had fully landed.

In other words, Usher won the argument that he is a complete entertainer. He did not always have the time to show what his best songs could do when allowed to breathe.
A 30-year career compressed into one halftime slot
The show was officially the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show, produced by DPS with Roc Nation and Jesse Collins and directed by Hamish Hamilton. The setting mattered. Usher had been performing a Las Vegas residency, and the halftime production extended that residency’s basic language: theatrical entrances, polished choreography, costume reveals, dancers, a live-performance atmosphere, and the sense that the audience was being guided through a carefully staged event rather than simply watching a singer stand at a microphone.
Apple Music presented the performance as a celebration of Usher’s 30-year career. That framing explains the setlist’s breadth. The performance moved through material associated with several eras, including “Caught Up,” “U Don’t Have to Call,” “Superstar,” “Love in This Club,” “If I Ain’t Got You,” “My Boo,” “Confessions Part II,” “U Got It Bad,” “Bad Girl,” “Yeah!,” “OMG,” “Turn Down for What,” and “Lovers and Friends,” along with shorter snippets and transitions.
That is an enormous amount of material for a halftime show. The sequencing had a clear broad outline: establish Usher as the star, revisit the romantic and R&B catalog, bring in the people connected to different chapters of his career, raise the tempo, and end with the most universally recognizable party record. The structure was easy to understand even when the details came at a dizzying speed.

A crowded guest list can make a headliner look like a host or a supporting player. That did not happen here. Usher remained the production’s center of gravity, a point emphasized by contemporaneous coverage from the Associated Press, The Washington Post, and The Guardian.
He was constantly in motion. He danced through much of the set, shifted between intimate and swaggering performance modes, worked the camera, and incorporated roller skates into the choreography. The physical demands were substantial: singing while moving, maintaining the show’s visual rhythm, hitting marks, interacting with guests, and keeping the persona of the confident romantic lead intact.

The show’s appeal therefore depended on more than vocal display. Usher’s performance identity has always combined singing, dancing, sensuality, precision, and theatrical control. The halftime set made that combination its main argument. Even when a song was reduced to a few lines, the movement and staging communicated which era or mood the song represented.
That commitment was also the source of some of the performance’s risk. The Guardian described moments that sounded uncharacteristically wobbly and contrasted the relentless pace with the more relaxed command associated with Rihanna’s previous halftime show. Those are critical assessments rather than objective measurements, but they identify a genuine trade-off: a performance built around continuous physical motion leaves less room for sustained vocal intimacy.

Alicia Keys supplied the emotional center
Alicia Keys’ entrance at a red piano provided the show’s clearest change of temperature. Her performance of “If I Ain’t Got You” briefly shifted the atmosphere away from the nonstop dance-and-hit parade. She then joined Usher for “My Boo,” one of the set’s most recognizable romantic moments.
Keys brought musicianship, history, and emotional directness to a production otherwise dominated by motion. The pairing also made sense within Usher’s catalog: “My Boo” is not simply another party record, but a song whose appeal depends on chemistry and memory. The problem was not the choice of material or guest. It was the limited time available to develop the moment. The transition from Keys’ solo performance into the duet was brief, and “My Boo” functioned more as a vivid reminder than a fully realized performance.
That pattern recurred throughout the show. The songs were selected intelligently, but several were asked to do the work of entire eras in seconds.
The guests mapped Usher’s career—but crowded the middle
The collaborators had identifiable roles rather than appearing as random celebrity cameos.

- H.E.R. brought guitar and a visible instrumental presence, giving the show a short but useful shift toward musicianship.
- Jermaine Dupri connected the performance to the Atlanta and So So Def lineage associated with important parts of Usher’s catalog, including “Confessions” and “Yeah!”
- will.i.am represented the “OMG” period and helped connect the set to Usher’s later pop-facing material.
- Lil Jon and Ludacris delivered the climactic party energy associated with “Yeah!” and the “Turn Down for What”/“Get Low” segment.
The final guest sequence was effective because it offered instant communal recognition. When Lil Jon and Ludacris arrived, the show no longer needed to explain the party; the songs did that work immediately. “Yeah!” was the obvious closing engine, and the performance used it as a release after the more curated movement through Usher’s catalog.
The middle was less unified. Each guest made sense individually, but the succession of collaborators and abbreviated songs sometimes made the performance feel episodic. Instead of a steadily developing narrative, it could resemble a checklist of important relationships, eras, and hits. That is an editorial inference from the documented setlist and the pacing criticisms made by The Guardian, the Los Angeles Times, and The Ringer, not a claim about the production’s behind-the-scenes intentions.
The show’s greatest strength: spectacle with a human center
Halftime shows are television events as much as musical performances, and this production understood that requirement. Large-scale staging, lighting, camera movement, dancers, costume changes, live-band and marching-band textures, and carefully timed entrances made the performance visually legible even when the music was moving rapidly.
The Television Academy recognized the broadcast craft with three nominations at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Variety Special (Live), Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special, and Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork for a Special. Those nominations support praise for the show’s technical and visual construction. They do not prove that it was artistically superior to every other halftime performance, but they do confirm that the production’s lighting, direction, and television execution were taken seriously by the academy.
What kept the spectacle from becoming impersonal was Usher himself. He supplied continuity as the show moved between eras. His clothes, gestures, dance vocabulary, and camera-facing performance style made the transitions feel like chapters in one performer’s career rather than unrelated music-video excerpts.
Where the medley format worked—and where it failed
It worked as a catalog introduction
For a broad Super Bowl audience, compression was useful. “Caught Up,” “U Don’t Have to Call,” “Love in This Club,” “U Got It Bad,” “Confessions Part II,” “My Boo,” and “Yeah!” each gave viewers a recognizable entry point. Someone who knew only one period of Usher’s work could still understand that the show was presenting a much larger career.

The rapid movement also prevented the set from becoming static. There was always another entrance, musical shift, visual reveal, or choreographic idea approaching. The show rarely felt sleepy or underpowered.
It failed as a sequence of complete songs
The cost was emotional depth. “U Got It Bad,” “Confessions Part II,” and “My Boo” are songs that benefit from atmosphere, phrasing, and accumulation. In the halftime version, they often served as memory triggers: a line, a hook, a familiar gesture, and then the show moved on.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Los Angeles Times described the performance as cramming three decades of hits into 13 minutes, while The Ringer argued that Usher attempted to do almost everything and still left the viewer wanting more. That criticism is persuasive because it points to the format rather than blaming the performer for failing to provide a full concert inside a slot designed to reward instant impact.
The Los Angeles Times also observed that the pace could limit the emotional detail in Usher’s singing and romantic songwriting. A longer performance might have revealed more of the qualities that distinguish his catalog from a generic dance-pop set. Here, the production often prioritized movement and recognition over sustained vocal storytelling.
Listen next: the album behind several of the show’s key moments
Viewers who wanted more time with the “Confessions Part II” and “My Boo” material could naturally continue with Usher Confessions CD. It is a related album, not a recording of the halftime show itself, but it provides useful context for the era the performance represented and lets those songs unfold at album length. Availability and editions can vary by retailer.
Collectors may also look for a Confessions 20th Anniversary vinyl edition. That is best understood as a physical edition connected to the show’s key musical period—not as an official physical release of the Super Bowl broadcast. Fans looking for a broader career survey can extend the listening trail to My Way, 8701, and Coming Home, all of which help explain the different eras represented in the medley.
Was the show vocally perfect?
No fair review should describe the performance as vocally flawless. The Guardian noted moments of vocal wobble, and the Los Angeles Times argued that the speed of the set sometimes obscured Usher’s emotional strengths. Those observations should be treated as critical judgments, not as instrument-measured conclusions about pitch or microphone technique.
At the same time, judging the show only as a stationary vocal recital would miss its design. Usher was dancing, skating, interacting with guests, and performing inside an elaborate television production. The central achievement was coordination: keeping the performance coherent while managing substantial physical and theatrical demands.

The most accurate assessment is therefore mixed but favorable. Usher’s voice was one component of a much larger performance, and the show occasionally sacrificed vocal and emotional relaxation to preserve its momentum. That compromise was visible, but it did not erase the strength of his overall command.
Final assessment
Usher’s Super Bowl LVIII halftime show was a highly watchable, technically polished career victory lap. It confirmed that he remains an unusually complete entertainer: singer, dancer, romantic lead, host, showman, and curator of a catalog large enough to support a much longer concert.

Its fast transitions, guest appearances, visual flourishes, and song fragments made the show exciting, but they also made several of Usher’s most emotionally distinctive songs feel underdeveloped. The production succeeded by making that limitation feel like speed and abundance; it faltered when the abundance began to feel like incompleteness.
That is ultimately a compliment with a qualification. Usher did not need the halftime show to prove that he had hits. He needed to prove that he could command the Super Bowl stage after three decades in the spotlight. On that narrower and more important test, he succeeded.

No. The performance received three nominations at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards—for the live variety special, lighting design or direction, and technical direction and camerawork—but the available research identifies it as a nominee, not a winner.
Was the halftime show performed as a series of complete songs?
No. It was a compressed medley containing full moments, shortened performances, snippets, and transitions from a large selection of Usher’s catalog. That approach increased recognition and momentum but limited the emotional development of several songs.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Usher’s halftime show was a triumphant showcase of veteran showmanship and production craft, but its relentless medley format made the performance feel more like an exhilarating career trailer than a complete concert. It proved Usher could still own the biggest stage; it also made a strong case for giving his best songs more room to breathe.
