Yes—Twitch ad blocking is currently failing for some viewers, but not in one universal outage. Results vary by browser, blocker, device, region, account, channel and the particular Twitch workaround. A normal filter list may still block banners and trackers while pre-roll or mid-roll video ads appear. Conversely, a Twitch-specific script may hide an ad but leave a purple screen, buffering or reduced quality.
The safest approach is diagnostic: check Twitch’s service status, test a clean browser configuration, remove conflicting or broken scripts, and use only maintained project sources. There is no responsibly verifiable free method that can be promised to work permanently for everyone as of August 16, 2026.
Is Twitch ad blocking broken right now?
For some users, yes. Community reports describe ads returning, streams buffering, lower resolutions and different outcomes in Firefox, Chrome-based browsers and Brave. These reports identify real failure patterns but are anecdotal, not controlled tests. See examples from uBlock Origin users, another recent troubleshooting thread and Adblock users.
Do not call it a Twitch-wide outage without an official incident. Check Twitch’s status page, which reports login, web, chat and video components separately. An operational status also does not prove that a particular ad-blocking workaround works.
Identify which failure you have
- Ads only: pre-rolls when joining, mid-rolls during a broadcast, picture-by-picture ads, companion overlays or display ads.
- Playback damage: a purple screen, endless loading, stream restarts, audio/video desynchronization, low resolution or video freezing while chat continues.
- Normal Twitch operation: the stream works with blocking disabled but fails when a custom script or aggressive filter is enabled.
- Creator promotion: sponsorships read or shown inside the broadcast are part of the content and are not ordinary browser ads.
Twitch documents stream display advertising at its stream-display guide and picture-by-picture formats at its picture-by-picture guide. Turbo prompts and account notices are also different from third-party advertising.

Why ordinary blockers miss Twitch video ads
Static filter lists excel at known ad domains, page elements and trackers. Twitch advertising is integrated with the viewing experience closely enough that removing one request or element can leave the player waiting for an ad decision or media segment. Twitch-specific projects therefore use stream substitution, player manipulation or other specialized techniques rather than only hiding a banner.
When Twitch changes player code, stream formats, ad logic or endpoint behavior, those techniques can fail. The maintained TwitchAdSolutions repository showed release v24 dated February 28, 2026; that release date is evidence of ongoing maintenance, not a universal success guarantee. ScrewTwitchAds likewise describes partial breakage for some regions or users.
Vendor explanations from AdGuard describe increasingly embedded advertising and alternate-player approaches. Treat those statements as vendor guidance, not independent validation.
Try these fixes in the safest order
- Check status: review status.twitch.com before changing your setup.
- Check whether other sites fail: if ordinary ad-supported sites also misbehave, investigate the browser, blocker, DNS service or installation rather than Twitch alone.
- Update from official sources: update your browser and blocker through the browser’s official store or the project’s own page.
- Disable duplicates: temporarily run one primary blocker. Test without combinations such as uBlock Origin plus another blocker, Brave Shields plus an aggressive extension, a browser filter plus a userscript, or AdGuard plus uBlock Origin.
- Clear Twitch site data: remove Twitch cookies and cached site data, then reload. This clears stale player state but cannot repair an outdated workaround.
- Use a private window or clean profile: enable the blocker for private windows first; otherwise the test may falsely appear unblocked.
- Try another stream: channel, account, region and ad schedule can change the result.
- Test with blocking disabled: if playback immediately recovers, suspect an incompatibility rather than a Twitch outage.
- Read the project’s official issues and releases: check the repository before reinstalling a script.
- Remove anything that harms playback: an ad-free purple screen or unwatchable stream is not a successful fix.
uBlock Origin: what it can and cannot do
uBlock Origin can continue blocking ordinary page ads and trackers while Twitch video ads appear. It is not, by itself, a guaranteed Twitch in-stream solution. Full desktop uBlock Origin, uBlock Origin Lite, browser-integrated blockers and external Twitch resources do not have identical capabilities.

The Pixeltris project documents loading a Twitch resource through uBlock Origin’s userResourcesLocation setting:
- Open the uBlock Origin dashboard.
- Open the settings area and find
userResourcesLocation. - Add a resource URL supplied by the project’s official repository.
- Apply or save the setting, update filter lists when appropriate, and reload Twitch completely.
Do not hard-code a script URL as a permanent recommendation without checking its current repository page. The project recommends a security permalink rather than an automatically changing URL, but a pinned version can become outdated. Inspect the author, issue history and update activity; never copy scripts from paste sites, video descriptions or unverified “fix” pages. Twitch’s own support page explains how to allowlist Twitch in AdBlock, Adblock Plus and uBlock Origin, reflecting Twitch’s official position against blocking.
Browser differences that affect results
Firefox
Firefox is often the most practical desktop environment for the full uBlock Origin extension and custom resources. It remains vulnerable to Twitch changes and script breakage. Install extensions from the official Firefox Add-ons site, not random download pages.

Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers
Extension capabilities and availability differ because of Manifest V3 and browser-specific policies. A Chromium-compatible blocker may not match the capabilities of full desktop uBlock Origin. That does not mean every Chromium browser is incapable of Twitch blocking; results are simply different and may change.
Brave
Brave Shields and Twitch-related filters work for some viewers but can also cause buffering or inconsistent results. User reports document mixed outcomes at r/brave_browser. Treat Brave as a browser alternative, not a guaranteed Twitch fix.
Desktop advice does not automatically apply to the native mobile app, smart TVs, consoles or streaming devices. iOS content-blocking limits, Android browser behavior and app-level playback controls differ; AdGuard’s mobile guidance also warns that app blocking has different limitations.

When Twitch loads but video does not
For a purple screen, infinite “Commercial break in progress,” frozen video, disappearing controls or repeated reloads, reverse the customization before adding more.

- Disable the Twitch-specific script or custom resource.
- Disable every blocker except one, then test the official Twitch player.
- Clear Twitch site data and restart the browser.
- Try a clean Firefox profile or another browser.
- Re-enable one component at a time until the failure returns.
Some stream-swapping methods can avoid an ad by using a different feed or playback path, with possible lower resolution, longer startup, gaps, buffering or incompatibility with certain broadcasts. Those outcomes are reported by users, not guaranteed effects.

- stream delay or missing chat and account functions;
- compatibility problems with encrypted or restricted broadcasts;
- uncertain maintenance and API breakage;
- security and privacy risks from an unfamiliar service.
Do not choose one solely because a forum post said it worked on a particular date.

Twitch Turbo is the official ad-free route. Twitch’s country-pricing documentation showed a U.S. web price of $11.99 per month on August 16, 2026; regional pricing and benefits can change. The same documentation describes ad-free viewing across Twitch, expanded emotes, custom chat colors, a badge and extended broadcast storage: Twitch Turbo pricing and benefits. Turbo is tied to your Twitch account, costs money and does not remove promotions embedded directly in a broadcast.
For broader privacy protection, a general blocker remains useful even when Twitch video ads get through. For reliability across devices and no script maintenance, Turbo is the clearer choice. For a free desktop setup, use only a reputable project and accept that it may stop working again.
Security and maintenance cautions
- Custom uBlock resources and userscripts execute privileged browser logic.
- Automatically updated scripts create supply-chain risk if a repository or release process is compromised.
- A pinned permalink reduces unexpected changes but can age out of compatibility.
- Review the repository, author, issue history and recent activity before installing.
- Never run several aggressive blockers together just to increase coverage.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Twitch ad blocking is not universally broken, but it is not reliably solved either. Update only from an official project, test with other blockers disabled, and remove any workaround that causes buffering or degraded video. Choose Twitch Turbo for dependable Twitch-wide ad-free viewing; choose a general blocker for broader web privacy, without assuming it will permanently defeat Twitch’s in-stream ads.
