It hides movie-like set pieces, unusual vehicles, creatures, signs and skyline jokes in a scene that changes over time. Roku confirms that the city contains Easter eggs, but it does not publish a complete item-by-item key. That means a responsible guide must distinguish confirmed additions from strong visual matches, fan theories, advertising integrations and scenery whose meaning is unknown.
What Roku City actually is
“Roku City” is the name viewers commonly use for Roku’s scrolling city screensaver. Roku’s own announcements connect it with City Stroll: Movie Magic. Older articles sometimes call it “City Scroll: Movie Magic”; that wording should not be confused with the current consumer-facing label.
The screensaver appears after your Roku has been idle. It is separate from Roku City wallpaper, which sits behind the Roku interface, and from the newer Roku City Home Screen tile, an interactive destination. Roku introduced the wallpaper as a companion to the classic screensaver in its announcement at roku.com/blog/roku-city-wallpaper.
The city is also more than a piece of decorative software. Roku Advertising sells placements inside Roku City, including buildings, neighborhoods and vehicles. A strange object may therefore be a permanent visual joke, a seasonal scene, a paid brand integration or a temporary promotion rather than a timeless film reference. Roku’s advertising materials describe the environment at advertising.roku.com/solutions/advertise/ad-types/destinations/roku-city.

How to turn on or change the screensaver
These are the current U.S. Roku support steps; labels and availability can vary by device, market and software version.
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select Theme, then Screensavers.
- Open My screensavers or browse the available choices.
- Highlight Roku City or City Stroll: Movie Magic and press OK.
- Choose Set as screensaver. If it is not installed, choose Get screensaver for a free option or follow the displayed purchase prompt.
- Use Screensaver wait time to select the idle period or disable the screensaver.
Roku documents this path and the wait-time controls at support.roku.com/en-us/article/change-the-screensaver. A theme pack can also change the wallpaper, screensaver or navigation sounds; its controls are explained at support.roku.com/article/change-the-theme-pack.
Where the hidden references appear
Think of the scene as layers. The foreground street carries moving cars and small events; the middle distance contains façades, signs and creatures; the skyline supplies towers, aircraft and large visual silhouettes. Letting the animation run through several cycles is more revealing than judging a single screenshot.
Buildings and skyline landmarks
Look for the Roku City sign, theater-like fronts, large towers, stations and buildings with deliberately exaggerated shapes. Some façades resemble fictional locations, but a resemblance alone does not establish a particular franchise. Treat a building as a likely reference only when its silhouette, neighboring props and context point in the same direction.

Vehicles
Vehicles are easy to miss because they move and may enter the frame only briefly. Roku announced five previously unseen cars for the City Stroll: Movie Magic screensaver in April 2024, as described at roku.com/blog/os-13. A car that appears in one version may not occupy the same position—or appear at all—in another.
Monsters, creatures and moving set pieces
Large silhouettes near water or buildings can evoke classic monster cinema, while aircraft and spacecraft create science-fiction associations. Fans have compared some scenes to shark films, giant-reptile movies, giant-ape stories and dinosaur adventures. Those comparisons are interpretations unless Roku has named the reference.
Space and science-fiction imagery
Rockets, unusual spacecraft, domes and futuristic towers can suggest properties such as Star Wars, Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey or Armageddon. The visual language may be intentional, but several films share the same vocabulary. Record the surrounding details before assigning a title.
Small signs, posters and background jokes
Windows, billboards, rooftop objects and street-level animations reward repeated viewing. A red balloon, a windmill, a castle-like structure or a musical scene may trigger a familiar association, yet generic city art can produce the same impression. “Unknown” is a more accurate label than a confident guess when no distinctive clue settles the question.

Seasonal and branded additions
Roku City has hosted branded appearances, including a SpongeBob-themed parade and a House of the Dragon dragon flying over the city, in Roku’s 2024 advertising recap at advertising.roku.com/learn/resources/2024-recap-technology-and-creativity-on-roku. Such scenes may be campaign-based and temporary. A branded character or building is not automatically a hidden Easter egg from that franchise.
How certain is an alleged Easter egg?
Use a confidence system rather than presenting an online checklist as an official map.
| Label | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Confirmed | Roku directly identifies the addition or scene. |
| High confidence | Several distinctive visual clues point to one property, even without a Roku statement. |
| Probable | The resemblance is strong but could have another explanation. |
| Speculative | The idea is a plausible fan reading based mainly on similarity. |
| Unknown | No interpretation is more persuasive than generic scenery or an unidentified prop. |
Check six things before naming a reference: the silhouette, nearby context, when the element appeared, whether it repeats, any official attribution and credible alternative explanations. Roku’s general promise of hidden references does not amount to a definitive catalog.
The December 2024 “glow-up”
Roku’s December 2024 update changed the look and density of the city. The company described a brighter color palette, stronger contrast, sharper detail, new buildings, additional Easter eggs and more animated elements. Existing users were meant to receive the changes automatically the next time the screensaver ran, rather than installing a separate replacement. Roku’s announcement is at roku.com/blog/en-gb/roku-city-glow-up.

What changed in 2026: an interactive Roku City
On May 27, 2026, Roku announced a Roku City tile for the Home Screen. Selecting it opens an interactive version of the city with features including Daily Trivia and the retro game Roku City Dash. The rollout began in the United States and was described as expanding to additional countries, so it is not guaranteed on every Roku player or television as of October 2026. Details appear at roku.com/blog/new-home-screen and roku.com/blog/os-25/.
The tile is useful for exploration because it turns a passive animation into an active destination. Its exact controls and content can depend on the device and rollout; do not assume that the normal screensaver itself supports pausing, rewinding or frame-by-frame inspection.
Why your Roku City may look different
- Device: Roku TVs, streaming sticks and players can receive different software or screen resolutions.
- Region and rollout: Features and interactive destinations may arrive at different times in different markets.
- Updates: Roku changes the default screensaver and adds content over time.
- Themes: A theme pack or seasonal setting can replace the selected screensaver.
- Promotions: A campaign may add a temporary building, parade, vehicle or character.
- Different feature: You may be seeing wallpaper, Backdrops or another ambient display rather than City Stroll.
Roku’s support page notes that default screensavers can change and that availability differs on select devices. Photo Streams have also moved to Backdrops; that transition is described at support.roku.com/en-us/article/photo-streams-is-moving-to-backdrops-what-you-need-to-know.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical method for identifying a scene
- Photograph the screen or capture the scene when the object is visible.
- Write down the date, country, Roku device model and Roku OS version.
- Describe observable features first: color, outline, movement, neighboring buildings and signage.
- Compare the description with Roku announcements, not only fan-made lists.
- Classify the result as confirmed, high confidence, probable, speculative or unknown.
- Recheck after an update or promotion; an element may be temporary or repositioned.
Comparing two Roku devices can be informative, but it is only an informal comparison because their software, resolution and rollout status may differ.

When Roku City disappears
If the familiar skyline is gone, first check Home > Settings > Theme > Screensavers and confirm that Roku City or City Stroll: Movie Magic is selected. Review Screensaver wait time, then check whether a theme pack, seasonal theme or Backdrops is active. If Roku City is not listed, it may not be installed or available on that device. A screensaver also will not start while the Roku is actively playing content, and a disabled wait time prevents it from appearing.
Do you need new Roku hardware?
No. A working Roku TV, player or stick is enough to explore the screensaver when the feature is available. If you need a Roku interface for a non-Roku television, Roku lists its current streaming players at roku.com/products/players; television models are at roku.com/products/tvs. A replacement remote, listed at roku.com/products/remotes, helps only with navigation when the original is missing or damaged. Buying a more expensive device does not guarantee a larger Easter-egg catalog or access to every interactive rollout.
Roku’s support documentation also identifies its Aquatic Life screensaver as exclusive to 4K Roku streaming devices. That is a separate screensaver consideration, not a requirement for Roku City.
The Bottom Line
Roku City is best understood as an evolving visual puzzle, not a fixed, officially mapped city. Enjoy the recognizable movie and television echoes, but label interpretations honestly, expect promotional and seasonal changes, and check your own device before treating a scene as universal.
