Apple Music includes Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless at no additional subscription tier, but the playback chain determines what you actually hear. Ordinary Bluetooth headphones do not receive lossless audio, and Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz generally needs an external DAC and a wired connection. Dolby Atmos is a different choice: it offers an immersive mix, not a higher-resolution version of stereo.
For most listeners, the practical starting point is simple: keep Bluetooth quality settings for wireless listening; choose Lossless for a wired setup; and use Hi-Res Lossless only if your DAC and connected equipment support it. Compare Dolby Atmos and stereo by album—neither presentation is automatically better.

Apple Music audio quality, explained
Apple Music’s lossless catalog uses Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC). Apple describes the catalog as spanning 16-bit/44.1 kHz through 24-bit/192 kHz, but that upper figure is a ceiling, not a promise that every song, device, or connection plays at that resolution. Apple’s lossless audio guide explains the supported formats and limitations.

- High Quality / AAC: Apple Music’s conventional lossy option. It uses less data and storage and is suitable for Bluetooth listening.
- Lossless: ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz. This includes CD-quality recordings (commonly 16-bit/44.1 kHz) and can be a sensible wired setting.
- Hi-Res Lossless: ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz. To use rates above 48 kHz, Apple generally requires an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and wired output.
- Dolby Atmos / Spatial Audio: An immersive mix or presentation, not a lossless-versus-lossy tier. It can sound wider or more enveloping, but it is not simply a higher-resolution stereo file.
Bit depth describes the digital signal’s resolution and relates to its potential dynamic range; sample rate describes how frequently the waveform is sampled. Larger numbers do not guarantee a better recording, master, or audible result. Apple notes that AAC and lossless can be “virtually indistinguishable” in some circumstances.

Lossless streaming and downloads use more bandwidth and storage than standard AAC. Also, some Apple Music content is not lossless: broadcast radio, live radio and on-demand programming from Apple Music 1, Hits and Country, and music videos are excluded. Track and album availability can vary. Apple Music Classical is included with an Apple Music subscription and offers recordings up to 24-bit/192 kHz Hi-Res Lossless, plus selected Dolby Atmos recordings; see Apple Music Classical.
What equipment do you actually need?
Follow the whole path from source to your ears. A lossless file cannot make the final connection lossless if the audio is converted for Bluetooth along the way.
- Bluetooth earbuds or headphones: Apple Music → Bluetooth encoding → headphones. Convenient, but not lossless over an ordinary Bluetooth connection, even if the app shows a Lossless badge or the headphones advertise AAC, aptX, LDAC, Bluetooth 5.x, or “high-resolution audio.”
- iPhone plus a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter: Apple Music → adapter DAC → wired headphones. Apple says its Lightning adapter supports up to 24-bit/48 kHz, making it suitable for the Lossless tier but not the full Hi-Res range.
- Phone plus USB DAC: Apple Music → USB connection → external DAC → wired headphones or amplifier. This is the usual route for Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz. The headphones or speakers still need to be connected to the DAC by wire.
- Computer plus DAC or powered speakers: Apple Music → computer output → USB DAC or compatible digital input → amplifier / powered speakers. The system’s output settings and any resampling matter; a file’s format alone does not prove the final output rate.
- Home theater: Apple Music Atmos mix → supported device and connection → compatible receiver, soundbar, television or speakers. Choose this route for immersive playback, not as a substitute for a wired stereo DAC setup.
- CarPlay: Apple documents lossless over USB CarPlay. Do not assume wireless CarPlay or Bluetooth car audio is lossless. Streaming in a car over cellular data can consume substantially more data.
A passive cable does not perform digital-to-analog conversion. A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter generally contains a DAC; a dedicated USB DAC/headphone amplifier adds conversion and may provide more output power; a receiver or powered speaker may perform conversion internally; and some USB headphones have their own DAC. Check the actual device’s specifications and compatibility rather than assuming all adapters support the same rates.

Apple’s Lightning adapter is documented up to 24-bit/48 kHz. For other Apple adapters, verify the current model’s specifications rather than assuming it supports 192 kHz. A more expensive DAC cannot fix poor mastering, unsuitable headphones, system resampling, a noisy room, or Bluetooth transmission.
Turn on Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Music > Audio Quality.
- Turn on Lossless Audio.
- Choose quality separately for Cellular Streaming, Wi-Fi Streaming, and Downloads.
The choices include Lossless (up to 24-bit/48 kHz) and Hi-Res Lossless (up to 24-bit/192 kHz). Apple’s current iPhone instructions show this path. Menu labels can differ on older software.
Mac
- Open the Music app.
- In the menu bar, select Music > Preferences.
- Open Playback, enable Lossless audio, and set streaming and download quality.
Apple says current Mac playback offers Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless choices. It specifically notes that 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models support native playback up to 96 kHz; other Macs may need an external DAC for rates above 48 kHz. To inspect a Mac output device and its configured rate, open Audio MIDI Setup and select the device. That setting does not by itself establish bit-perfect playback: application behavior, macOS, the device, and the audio path all matter.
Windows
- Open Apple Music and select Sidebar Actions.
- Choose Settings > Playback.
- Enable Lossless audio and set streaming and download quality.
Apple says Windows listeners can use built-in speakers, wired headphones, receivers, or powered speakers; an external DAC may be needed above 48 kHz. Keep four things distinct: the format Apple Music decodes, the Windows audio mixer, the DAC’s negotiated output rate, and any exclusive-mode or system resampling behavior. Do not assume the Windows signal is bit-perfect without verifying the exact configuration.

Android
- Open Apple Music and tap More.
- Tap Settings > Audio Quality.
- Enable Lossless, then choose streaming and download quality.
Apple documents wired headphones, receivers, and powered speakers as options and says an external DAC may be required above 48 kHz. USB audio behavior can vary with Android version, manufacturer, USB implementation, adapter, and DAC compatibility.
Practical quality defaults
- Cellular: High Quality if data is limited; choose Lossless only if the extra data is acceptable and your listening chain warrants it.
- Wi-Fi: Lossless is a reasonable wired-listening default. Select Hi-Res Lossless only when the equipment supports it and you want it.
- Downloads: Lossless balances quality and file size for many wired listeners. Reserve Hi-Res downloads for a compatible setup with ample storage.
Enabling a quality setting does not improve or remaster a recording. The particular track must be available in that format, and the output chain must support it.
Dolby Atmos: a different listening choice
Atmos music can create a wider or more immersive presentation. Apple lists built-in speaker support on certain iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac models, as well as Apple TV 4K arrangements using compatible HomePod speakers, soundbars, AV receivers, or televisions. On compatible Apple or Beats headphones, Atmos may play automatically when a track is available; other headphones can generally use the Always On setting. The app’s Atmos controls include Automatic, Always On, and Off, though exact labels and locations can vary by platform. Automatic applies Atmos when Apple detects a supported playback path; Always On can enable it with other headphones; Off selects stereo where available. Atmos does not require a wired connection for a listener to hear a spatial mix, but ordinary Bluetooth transmission still is not lossless.

Atmos and stereo may use different masters or mixes. Vocal placement, bass balance, loudness, instrument separation, head tracking, headphones, and room can all affect preference. If an Atmos version sounds odd or less satisfying, compare it with stereo on the same album rather than treating Atmos as a universal upgrade.
How to tell what is playing
- Look for the Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless label on the album or Now Playing screen.
- Confirm Lossless Audio is enabled on the device and that the track has the relevant version available.
- Check the actual output path. Bluetooth headphones are not lossless under ordinary Bluetooth playback, regardless of the badge.
- If using a DAC with a display or sample-rate indicator, check its reported rate. On computers, inspect the selected operating-system output device and format.
- Compare a known track with a visible badge, then try a second track if the DAC indicator or sound is unexpected.
A badge indicates that a version is available; it does not certify that every stage of the signal path is delivering the maximum resolution. A DAC reading can also be affected by the operating system, app, adapter, and device configuration.
Downloads, data, and offline listening
Changing the download setting does not necessarily replace files already saved on a device. To obtain the lossless version of an existing download:

- Remove the downloaded song or album from the device.
- Confirm Lossless Audio is enabled.
- Set the desired download quality.
- Download the music from the Apple Music catalog again.
- Check the badge and the playback output.
Lossless and especially Hi-Res Lossless downloads can take substantially more storage than AAC. If space or cellular data is a concern, leave Hi-Res for Wi-Fi, use Lossless rather than Hi-Res for downloads, and keep cellular streaming at High Quality. Apple does not provide one fixed data-per-hour figure that applies to every track and sample rate.
Setups by listener and budget
- No new equipment: Keep the headphones you own, enable Lossless or Atmos, and compare. If you listen mainly over Bluetooth, do not expect a lossless connection.
- Low-cost wired listening: Use an appropriate Apple adapter and wired headphones. The Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter is documented for up to 24-bit/48 kHz Lossless.
- Portable Hi-Res: Use a compatible USB DAC and wired headphones. Confirm the phone, operating system, adapter, DAC, and headphones work together and support the rate you intend to use.
- Desktop stereo: Connect a computer to a USB DAC/headphone amplifier or to powered speakers with a suitable digital input. Check the system output format; do not infer bit-perfect playback from the track badge.
- Home theater: Choose compatible Atmos playback equipment if immersive mixes are the priority. HomePod and Atmos-capable systems offer convenience and spatial playback, but are not automatically equivalent to a dedicated wired DAC-and-headphone chain.
- Convenience first: Use Bluetooth headphones with High Quality or try Atmos if you enjoy the mix. A DAC purchase makes little sense if the headphones will remain wireless.
When choosing wired headphones, consider comfort, isolation, sensitivity, impedance, and whether an amplifier is needed—not just a “hi-res” label or price. Choose equipment to solve a real bottleneck, not to match the largest number printed on a box.

“My AirPods are not lossless.”
That is expected for ordinary Bluetooth playback. Apple says standard Bluetooth connections do not support lossless audio. Apple documents a narrow exception: a proprietary wireless protocol can provide Lossless Audio with ultra-low latency for certain current AirPods or Beats models paired with Apple Vision Pro. Do not generalize this exception to iPhone-to-AirPods listening. For ordinary lossless listening, use a wired output.
“The badge says Hi-Res, but my DAC shows 44.1 kHz.”
Possible causes include system resampling, the wrong selected output, a limiting hub or adapter, a track that is not the Hi-Res version, Atmos or another playback mode, mobile operating-system audio handling, or an indicator that does not update as expected. Turn Atmos off temporarily, connect the DAC directly, confirm the track badge, inspect output settings, and try another known Hi-Res track. If possible, test the DAC with another phone or computer. Do not treat the badge alone as proof of bit-perfect output.
“My downloaded music still sounds the same.”
Delete the existing downloads, confirm Lossless is on, set the desired download quality, and download the tracks again. The old offline files may still be the earlier quality.
“Hi-Res uses too much data or storage.”
Set Hi-Res for Wi-Fi only, choose Lossless rather than Hi-Res for downloads, or use High Quality for cellular streaming. Review downloaded music and storage periodically.
“Dolby Atmos sounds worse.”
The Atmos and stereo versions may be different mixes, and a listener may prefer the stereo master. Compare both versions at a comfortable, similar listening level; check whether head tracking or spatial processing changes the presentation.

“Can I get lossless over CarPlay or home streaming?”
Apple identifies USB CarPlay as a lossless option. Wireless CarPlay and Bluetooth car audio should not be assumed lossless. AirPlay and other network routes depend on the receiver, protocol, app, and device configuration; do not label them universally bit-perfect.
“My Apple TV setup does not show Hi-Res Lossless.”
Apple’s support information has distinguished Apple TV 4K lossless support from Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz. Check Apple’s current compatibility guidance for your model and software rather than assuming a television or receiver can output the maximum rate.

Apple Music is a strong fit if you want Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless included with the subscription, use Apple devices, want Apple Music Classical, or enjoy Atmos mixes. A wired headphone listener can try Lossless with a comparatively simple setup; a dedicated Hi-Res listener should first confirm the entire DAC and output path supports the rates they want.
If you listen almost entirely through Bluetooth, in a car, outdoors, or in noisy places, paying for a hi-fi feature may make little practical difference. Standard quality can be the sensible choice, though Atmos may still appeal as a different presentation. Home-theater listeners should prioritize Atmos-compatible equipment if immersive music is their goal.
Apple’s US subscription page lists plans and features, but prices and promotions vary by region and change over time; check the current Apple Music page for local terms. If comparing services, compare the features you actually use—catalog, app, playlists, device support, and available quality—not only maximum sample-rate claims. Spotify’s current lossless availability and plan terms likewise depend on market and can change; consult its lossless information and plan page.
The simplest useful rule is to match the setting to the listening chain: AAC for wireless convenience, Lossless for straightforward wired listening, Hi-Res Lossless for a compatible wired hi-fi setup, and Atmos when you prefer the spatial mix. Better mastering, headphones, speakers, and room conditions often matter more than a higher sample-rate label.
