Universal Music Group (UMG) settled its copyright lawsuit against AI music startup Udio and agreed to license recorded music and publishing rights for a planned subscription music platform. Announced on October 29, 2025, the arrangement combines a legal settlement, licensing agreements and a product partnership; it is not an acquisition. The companies described a 2026 launch, but the public materials cited here do not confirm that the fully redesigned platform is available as of August 18, 2026. Meanwhile, Udio says audio, video and stem downloads are disabled during the transition.
What UMG and Udio agreed to
The October 29, 2025 announcement has three distinct parts:
- A settlement: UMG and Udio resolved UMG’s copyright litigation against the startup. UMG described the settlement as compensatory, but neither the amount nor its terms were disclosed.
- Licensing: The companies announced agreements covering UMG recorded music and publishing rights.
- A planned service: They said they would collaborate on a subscription-based experience for creating, consuming and streaming music.
UMG said the service is intended to use authorized, licensed music for AI training and create additional revenue opportunities for its artists and songwriters. Those are announced aims, not a public accounting of the training data, payment arrangements or final product rules. UMG’s announcement and Udio’s description of the transition do not disclose the settlement amount, royalty rates, agreement term, territorial coverage or allocation of revenue among labels, publishers, artists and songwriters.
The deal does not mean Universal bought Udio. Udio’s help center says Universal and Warner did not buy or own the company; it describes the companies’ arrangements as licensing partnerships. Udio’s Warner partnership FAQ

Why there was a lawsuit—and what the settlement does not decide
The dispute was part of a wider fight over whether generative music companies may use copyrighted recordings to train their systems without permission or compensation. In 2024, UMG, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group sued Udio and rival Suno, alleging large-scale copyright infringement. These were allegations, not findings that a court reached against Udio.
Settling the case ends the dispute between UMG and Udio on agreed terms; it does not, by itself, establish that Udio’s earlier training practices were lawful or unlawful. Nor does a private settlement set a binding rule for other AI companies. Background on the litigation
What the planned platform may offer
UMG and Udio have described a protected, licensed environment for making, customizing, sharing and streaming music. Udio has outlined possible features involving participating artists’ voices and styles, as well as remixes, covers, mashups and reimagined songs. The announcements frame these uses as subject to artist permissions and platform controls.

That is a direction, not a finished specification. The companies have not said that every UMG artist, recording or composition will be available, or published the complete opt-in and opt-out process. A license to use music in a service also does not automatically tell users who owns a generated track, whether it can be released commercially, or what permissions apply to a particular output.
What Udio users should know during the transition
The clearest practical change is that Udio has disabled downloads of audio, video and stems. Udio said existing creations would remain accessible in a controlled environment and that the service would be modified with safeguards including fingerprinting and filtering. These details come from Udio’s help pages and can change. Credits do not roll over, according to its credit-limit documentation. Udio says its subscription trial can run for up to seven days, is limited to one per creator and may convert to a paid subscription if not canceled. For anyone using Udio for production, the download restriction matters more than a higher credit allowance: without export of audio or stems, it is harder to archive work, edit it in a digital audio workstation, deliver files to collaborators or prepare a conventional release. Existing creations may remain shareable through Udio pages, but access inside a service is not the same as having portable files or a clear commercial-use license.

Has the new licensed Udio launched?
The companies announced a 2026 target, not a specific launch date. The official materials cited here do not verify that the redesigned, fully licensed platform has publicly launched as of August 18, 2026. Udio’s status page may indicate whether its existing website is operating, but operational status alone does not establish that the new product, catalog features or rights framework are in place. What remains unknown
- The settlement amount and other financial terms.
- How training, generation, streaming or voice and style uses translate into payments, and how those payments are divided.
- Which artists, recordings and compositions will be included, and how participation or withdrawal will work.
- The final launch date, price, geographic availability and subscription terms.
- Whether users will be able to download audio and stems again.
- Who owns or licenses generated works, whether users can release them commercially, and how user-provided lyrics, uploads and recordings are treated.
- How the service will handle outputs that resemble protected songs or use a recognizable artist voice or persona.
UMG’s promise of “further revenue opportunities” for artists and songwriters is not a disclosed compensation formula. The public announcements do not specify per-generation payments, streaming rates, training fees, voice-licensing fees or publishing splits. They also do not show whether independent artists will have equivalent controls or compensation.

What “licensed” does—and does not—mean for creators
Licensing can address permission to use particular recordings and compositions for defined purposes. It does not automatically settle every rights question surrounding an AI-made track. Training rights, rights to reproduce or transform source material, composition and publishing rights, an artist’s voice or persona, distribution rights, and rights in the user’s contribution can be separate issues. A generated work could also raise a similarity dispute even within a licensed service.
Until Udio publishes the new terms and output rules, users should not assume that “licensed” means every prompt is permitted, every output is cleared for commercial release, or the user owns all rights in a song. Artists should likewise look for clear terms on how permission is granted, what uses it covers, how compensation is calculated and whether consent can be changed later.

The agreement marks a move from litigation toward negotiated licensing as one possible business model for AI music. Major rightsholders may gain a way to monetize catalog access and set conditions for AI uses; AI companies may gain access to music and artist participation through formal agreements instead of relying on disputed training practices.

But that model could also favor companies able to secure deals with major labels, leaving smaller developers and independent musicians with less bargaining power. Disputes may shift from training data to output similarity, consent, attribution, royalty accounting and control over an artist’s identity. The Udio settlement does not resolve those issues for the industry as a whole.
In November 2025, Udio also announced a licensing arrangement and litigation resolution with Warner Music Group. The proposed Warner-linked service likewise described remixes, covers and new songs involving artists who choose to participate. That makes the UMG deal part of a broader major-label licensing strategy, but it does not establish that Sony, independent labels or all artists are covered. Udio’s Warner partnership FAQ
UMG’s separate alliance with Stability AI was aimed at professional music-creation tools and licensed-data training, rather than necessarily the same consumer creation-and-streaming platform proposed with Udio. Practical checklist before relying on Udio
- Confirm whether downloads and stems are available for the exact product and account you plan to use.
- Read the current terms for commercial use, ownership, distribution and any limits on generated outputs.
- Check whether a voice, style or catalog work is explicitly available through artist permission; do not infer permission from the licensing announcement alone.
- Review how prompts, lyrics, uploaded audio and recordings are stored or used.
- Check credit expiry, subscription cancellation and what happens to existing work if your account ends.
- For a release that needs predictable rights or portable production files, consider a conventional DAW, properly licensed samples, a music library or commissioned musicians until the new service’s export and licensing rules are clear.
