Unfrosted turns the real Kellogg’s-versus-Post race behind the Pop-Tart into an intentionally ridiculous 1963 comedy. Jerry Seinfeld leads the cast as fictional Kellogg’s executive Bob Cabana, alongside Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, James Marsden and a long list of comic cameos.
Unfrosted is Jerry Seinfeld’s deliberately absurd version of the race to invent the Pop-Tart. The 2024 Netflix comedy features Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, James Marsden and a remarkably crowded supporting cast—including Mad Men stars Jon Hamm and John Slattery.
The short version: Seinfeld plays Bob Cabana, a fictional Kellogg’s executive; McCarthy plays Donna “Stan” Stankowski, the technician helping create the pastry; and Gaffigan plays Edsel Kellogg III, Cabana’s boss. Around them, the film mixes fictional characters, comic versions of real historical figures and branded mascots such as Tony the Tiger, Chef Boyardee, Snap, Crackle and Pop.

Jerry Seinfeld as Bob Cabana
Seinfeld plays Bob Cabana, Kellogg’s head of development and the fictional executive charged with winning the race to create the new breakfast product. Cabana is not a real Pop-Tart inventor or documented historical participant. He is the movie’s comic engine: a corporate insider trying to outmaneuver Post while assembling an increasingly bizarre team of experts.

Melissa McCarthy as Donna “Stan” Stankowski
Melissa McCarthy plays Donna “Stan” Stankowski, usually referred to as Stan. Stan is the technically gifted problem-solver who can turn Cabana’s vague product ambition into something that might actually be manufactured.
The character is presented as eccentric, uncompromising and exceptionally capable. Her position also reflects the film’s 1960s setting: she is a woman working in a male-dominated technical environment and has little patience for executives who underestimate her. Stan is fictional, rather than a portrayal of a known Pop-Tart developer.
Jim Gaffigan as Edsel Kellogg III
Jim Gaffigan plays Edsel Kellogg III, Bob Cabana’s boss and the money behind the Kellogg’s empire. The character is an inherited-wealth executive whose authority comes more from his name and position than from practical expertise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

He represents the boardroom pressure behind the product race while Stan and Cabana deal with the actual technical and strategic problems.

Amy Schumer as Marjorie Post
Amy Schumer plays Marjorie Post, the Post representative competing with Kellogg’s to launch the new toaster pastry. Marjorie Post was a real business figure, but Unfrosted does not present Schumer’s character as a faithful biographical portrait.
The movie uses the real rivalry between Kellogg’s and Post as its starting point, then turns Post into part of an exaggerated corporate comedy. Max Greenfield’s Rick Ludwin serves as her assistant and second-in-command.
Hugh Grant as Thurl Ravenscroft and Tony the Tiger
Hugh Grant has one of the film’s most conspicuous comic transformations. He plays Thurl Ravenscroft, the American actor and singer associated with the voice of Tony the Tiger, but the movie turns him into a bitter, exaggerated British Shakespearean performer who resents being pushed toward mascot work.
The real Ravenscroft was American. Grant’s accent, temperament and storyline are intentionally fictionalized, making this less a historical portrayal than a joke built around a recognizable advertising voice.
James Marsden as Jack LaLanne
James Marsden plays Jack LaLanne, the real fitness personality who became famous for promoting exercise and physical health. In the film, LaLanne is recruited as one of Kellogg’s “taste pilots” or celebrity consultants.

That premise is part of the movie’s deliberate nonsense. Unfrosted does not claim that LaLanne helped develop the Pop-Tart in real life.
Other major members of the ensemble
- Thomas Lennon as Harold von Braunhut: A member of Kellogg’s panel of supposed geniuses. The real von Braunhut was associated with the Sea-Monkeys mail-order product, a fact the movie converts into an absurd credential.
- Jack McBrayer as Steve Schwinn: A bicycle-industry heir whose consulting contribution is inspired by making a product easy for children to handle.
- Bobby Moynihan as Chef Boyardee: A fictionalized version of the famous pasta-brand figure and one of Cabana’s unlikely celebrity consultants.
- Bill Burr as President John F. Kennedy: Burr plays the Massachusetts-born president in a comic performance that draws attention to both men’s Massachusetts connection.
- Christian Slater as Mike Diamond: A mysterious milkman linked to the movie’s fictional “milkman mafia” subplot.
Supporting cast: Snap, Crackle, Pop and more
The film’s supporting cast is almost as crowded as its main ensemble. Netflix’s role list includes:
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Kyle Mooney | Snap |
| Mikey Day | Crackle |
| Drew Tarver | Pop |
| Adrian Martinez | Tom Carvel |

The Mad Men cameo: Jon Hamm and John Slattery
Two of the most recognizable cameos are Jon Hamm and John Slattery. They reprise their Mad Men advertising roles as Don Draper and Roger Sterling, respectively, rather than playing new characters with similar names.
In Unfrosted, Kellogg’s brings Draper and Sterling in to help market the proposed pastry. The cameo therefore works as a direct joke for viewers who recognize the pair as the high-powered advertising executives from the period drama Mad Men.
Which Unfrosted characters are real?
The film’s cast falls into several overlapping categories:

- Fictional characters: Bob Cabana, Donna “Stan” Stankowski, Edsel Kellogg III, Rick Ludwin and Mike Diamond are movie inventions. Snap, Crackle and Pop are branded cereal characters performed by actors in the film.
- Historical figures played for comedy: Marjorie Post, Thurl Ravenscroft, Jack LaLanne, Harold von Braunhut, John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev were real people, but the film’s versions are comic and heavily fictionalized.
- Branded or advertising figures: Tony the Tiger and Chef Boyardee are familiar brand characters or brand identities whose film appearances are not evidence that they participated in the real product’s development.
- Fictional advertising cameo versions: Don Draper and Roger Sterling are the Mad Men characters, brought into the film as a cross-franchise joke.
Is Unfrosted based on a true story?
Only in the broadest sense. Kellogg’s and Post really did compete in Battle Creek, Michigan, around the development of the product that became the Pop-Tart. That corporate rivalry is the film’s historical jumping-off point.
Almost everything around that framework is intentionally exaggerated or invented. The movie is set in 1963 and imagines a secretive, chaotic race involving celebrity consultants, brand mascots, corporate conspiracies and a “milkman mafia.” It should be treated as a period comedy, not a documentary or a reliable account of the Pop-Tart’s invention.
The distinction matters particularly with Marjorie Post, Thurl Ravenscroft, Jack LaLanne, Harold von Braunhut, Kennedy and Khrushchev. Their names connect the jokes to recognizable history, but their involvement in the film’s Pop-Tart plot is comic fiction.
What to serve for an Unfrosted movie night
The obvious snack is the product at the center of the story: Pop-Tarts toaster pastries. A variety pack is the easiest option when a group wants to compare familiar flavors, while a single-flavor multipack makes more sense if everyone has the same favorite. Availability, flavor selection and pack sizes vary by retailer and location, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old price or product count.
For a simple setup, use a toaster or toaster oven according to the appliance and pastry manufacturer’s safety instructions. Neither appliance is required to watch the film, and no particular model has been tested or endorsed here.
Who is the lead actor in Unfrosted?
Jerry Seinfeld is the lead actor. He plays Bob Cabana, the fictional Kellogg’s executive at the center of the Pop-Tart race. Seinfeld also directed and co-wrote the film.
