Umrao Jaan (1981) Review: Rekha Is the Life and Soul of Muzaffar Ali’s Classic

Rekha gives Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan its emotional through-line, while its music, poetry and art direction create a vivid portrait of Lucknow’s courtesan culture.

Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan is most compelling when its music, poetry and carefully shaped period world lead back to Rekha. As Amiran, renamed Umrao Jaan after her abduction and sale into a Lucknow tawaif household, she gives the film its emotional through-line: an artist’s longing and limited freedom remain visible as her circumstances change. The Hindi colour film runs 145 minutes, according to the National Film Archive of India’s catalogue.

How the story becomes a film

Ali’s 1981 film adapts Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s novel Umrao Jaan Ada. The National Film Archive of India’s synopsis traces Amiran from her abduction in Faizabad to a Lucknow household where she is trained as a performer and poet. That shift—from a life narrated in literature to one expressed through image, song and performance—is the adaptation’s central opportunity.

The film’s musical and visual form makes Umrao’s artistry part of how the story is told, rather than a detail attached to her biography. Yet period beauty can also create distance: the more cultivated the world around her appears, the more important it is that the audience can still read the person within it. Rekha supplies that human continuity. This is an interpretation of the film’s approach, not a claim that the adaptation reproduces the novel in every respect.

Rekha’s performance holds the emotional center

Rekha plays both Amiran and the woman who becomes Umrao Jaan. Her performance is the film’s strongest connecting thread: the character’s identity is shaped by artistry and recognition, but also by choices constrained by the circumstances into which she has been forced. The story’s changing relationships and situations matter because they register against that continuing inner life.

#1 Best Overall

This centrality is more than a retrospective critical judgment: Rekha received the National Film Award for Best Actress for the role. That recognition does not settle every question about the film, but it reflects how much depends on the performance. Without a compelling Umrao, the poetry, music and carefully made setting could remain impressive surfaces; Rekha gives them an emotional point of reference.

Music, poetry and a world shaped by place

The film’s songs and poetry belong to its portrait of a performer’s life. They let Umrao’s artistic skill become part of her dramatic identity, while the surrounding design situates that life in the cultivated world of Lucknow’s courtesan culture. The National Film Archive of India’s awards catalogue recognizes Khayyam for the music, Asha Bhosle for female playback singing, and Bansi Chandragupta for art direction.

Ali’s account of the film’s origins also connects its world to his own sense of place. In a 2025 interview with Cinema Express, he described the work as arising from “my Lucknow, my sense of music, my understanding of people and characters—all coming out.” That helps explain why the setting is not simply ornamental: music and art direction contribute to the film’s idea of a cultural world, while Rekha’s performance makes its human cost legible.

What the 2025 restoration changes—and what it does not

NFDC and NFAI restored the film under the National Film Heritage Mission. Cinema Express reported in 2025 that Ali supervised the restoration using a 35mm release print preserved by NFAI. The restored version returned to cinemas in June 2025, as reported by PTI via ThePrint.

A restored theatrical presentation gives viewers a renewed opportunity to encounter Ali’s visual design and the film’s musical world on the big screen. It does not change the underlying balance between spectacle and intimacy: that still rests on whether the period detail brings Umrao closer or holds her at a remove. The sources reporting the restoration do not establish technical specifications such as resolution, so the restoration should not be described in those terms.

Scroll’s review of the 2025 release calls Rekha the film’s “life and soul” and praises the restoration. Those are the reviewer’s evaluations, not technical findings. They align with the film’s most persuasive quality: its elaborate world has lasting force because Rekha’s performance gives that world a person to care about.

Is Umrao Jaan worth watching?

Yes, especially for viewers interested in performance-led period cinema, Hindi film music, or adaptations that turn a literary life into a visual and musical drama. The film’s 145-minute runtime asks for a sustained commitment, and its formal beauty may sometimes keep the viewer at a distance. But Rekha’s work gives the story an emotional anchor, while the music and art direction make the setting an essential part of its identity rather than mere backdrop.
